That's what speculation once had the A9 series morphing into but instead Sony went the high-priced global sensor route, effectively putting both the A1 and A9 series out of reach of many amateurs. And even if there was a "baby A1" what number would Sony give that series considering its two flagships are numbered at the opposite ends of the scale?!
An APSC version A1 or even A9 mk1/2 stacked sensor in an A1/7/9 style body would sell incredibly well. I would buy one immediately.
I like the portability of my A7CR but never liked that rangefinder style body for action shots when I had an a6500.

I have been shooting with the Z8, along side my A7s3, and now A7CIIs. I love the camera, love the image quality. But, I am finding it too big and heavy, and it actually hurts to shoot with it (arthritis) because of where the weight sits. I hate to sell it, but Sony has nothing to compete with it. Don't want an original A1, and the A1II is too much, the RV is too slow. The A9III, meh on 24mp. I am really stuck.

What is wrong with the A1? The II is a minor refresh.

@3catsinky I feel similar on a1. I gave some thought to picking up a used one, and I just can't see spending 4k on a camera that has some of the same limitations of my a7rIV. Two big ones to me are that the a1 has the weaker IBIS and color management that Sony improved a lot with the a7rV and forward. The a1 is also missing the AI AF chip that people say really helps.
Nikon has spoiled us. The only Sony camera that really seems to compete with Z8 is the a1 II, which is almost double the price. I keep hoping Sony makes a new line that compeates more directly with Z8 in price.

I have an a7riv, a1, and a1ii. A1's silent shutter makes the existing ibis seemingly more effective. Much more keepers on a1 than a7riv.
I have not noticed difference with the fake ai chip yet, but haven't done much with action lately.
The A1 is lightyears beyond the a7riv. By a bonkers amount.

the AI chip is no joke. For example, I used my A7s3 with 35F1.8 to shoot a short instructional video on a construction site, It was focus breathing badly, despite me using a light, and eye AF locked on target.
Next shoot for the same company, used the A7cII with 20-40F4, it stayed on focus the entire time. I won't buy any Sony camera without it.

The A1ii is 4 year old tech as well. Most of the cameras are reusing old tech now. Thr A7v will be lightyears behind a 50mp stacked sensor.
describe new tech if you think the a12 is old tech

New sensor(more mp, better iso performance, etc), faster readout, more fps, ability to use the speed of modern memory cards(cfexpress4-the a1ii uses cfexpress 3 speeds with the 4 cards, which is embarassing, since sony has pioneered the standard and their own memory cards were out before the a1ii released), a large increase in tracking calculations, quicker buffer clear, or global shutter.
It is really the A1.1. The standout is the precapture, which was done years ago on the z9.

I’ve owned several A7x, A7Rx, A9x, and a A1 as my full frame mirrorless cameras and the A7Cx as smaller travel cameras and the model naming conventions have never bothered me or kept me confused. If they confuse you how do you deal with the jumble of video standards, just curious.
By the way also shot Canon for years and currently own an R5 Mk II after the R, and R5 and bought a used 1DX Mark II. Tried the Z9 but that tank was too much for me to carry and their Z8 and upgraded Z6x was not yet available.
It would be nice to see them target a camera to compete head to head with the R5 Mark II as a more general purpose camera that can do about anything and there reduced size and FE and third party lens collection would be a great advantage IMHO. Canon L lens family is great but for me as I get older becoming too heavy.

The Z9 precapture is not raw. That's the biggest missing feature from the Z9/Z8. I believe Olympus was actually the first to do pre capture raw.
I think Sony has to offer pre-capture in the the up-coming A7V if they expect it to compete with the Canon R5 and offer it a camera less than $6500 and a camera that wildlife shooter consider that has enough Mpixel. The A9III is not that kind of camera.

Yes, I understand that..but that was also 2021.
