As Leica does not publish roadmaps, the first 3-4 years you are unlikely to know though whether there will ever be an M EV2... Leica might just be testing the waters with the M EV1...
Will they have adequate focus aids, something we have not seen? - a big question because RF is a very 'local to the eye' technique. The lack of IBIS will impact ease of focus if they use magnification, as you are effectively trying to focus a 500mm lens with a 100mm if the ratio if 5:1. You need very steady hands.
Also interesting are the implications for the long-neglected longer-than-50mm M lenses segment. It could be a great development path for Leica, if they choose to go that way. Not just them, also for the M lens makers that are appearing these days. I feel they may be forced to make an IBIS M sooner rather than later, unless focus is basic mirrorless standard at least.

It seems sooner or later this camera will be officially announced, even though the latest rumors suggest it might have been postponed, at least in the US.
For those curious:
Is this camera the one you've been waiting for, or do you still prefer focusing with the traditional rangefinder on an M body?
Would you consider an M body with an EVF to complement your M Rangefinder for situations where it makes sense (ultra wide, telephoto, close-focus, macro, etc.), potentially owning two or more Leica M cameras?
For those not actively considering it: How do you think the EVF experience will compare to our current mirrorless cameras? And if it exceeds expectations, would that experience be enough to make you consider getting one?
I'm curious how many of us fall into each camp ...Show more →
I am not sure yet-
I already own 2 M bodies so I am not opposed to it but it would really need to be a unique offering that makes EVF focus simple. I want nothing to do with magnification so if that’s part of the strategy, I am out before it begins.
I really think Leica is going to release something special here, or at least will be attempting to. I would love to see the Product Managements goal to engineering teams to design.
I hope it was just as simple as make an EVF with focusing just as good if not better as the Leica M….

The lack of IBIS isn't really an issue when focusing through the viewfinder. Leica has cleverly stabilized the M11's EVF/LCD, making manual focusing easier (stable) even without sensor-based IBIS. It's a feature many people don't realize, but it's one of the M11's great little advantages.
It's very likely the new M EV1 will include this as well.

I am on the camp where I am very comfortable using the range finder when using the OVF or simply shooting from the hip. I dont use the Visoflex 2 at all, so my curiosity was simply to see how Leica was going to implement the EVF into this next model. I see no use at this stage of my life for a "full time" built in EVF on a Leica M body. My true pleasure comes from using the unique range finder mechanism and distance scales on its lenses. My fav pairings are 28mm /40mm or 35mm alone )
I am not prejudging. I am open to any camera that provides me a more enjoyable shooting experience and helps me produce better images. If the M EV-1 accomplishes those things I will own one. Not sure if it would be an addition or replacement.
Because it is 45 grams lighter than the RF version and would be black instead of silver it would be a meaningfully reduction in weight from my current silver M 11 which is an attractive proposition for me.
I’ve been busy with work and family, so I’ve just seen this now. I guess Leica has to do it, but I don’t see it as an M camera, I see it as a Q camera variant- which I’m surprised took this long. Sure M mount, but outside of that it is a Q camera with an M mount?
To me, the M system is for 90mm and shorter lenses, with as small of a form factor as possible. I wish they would go all the way to a CL size, and by that I mean 1970s M mount CL size.
If it helps keep Leica relevant- and gets even more M mount lenses out there- all the better. But I don’t see it replacing my M10 or my Fuji X100.

Who knows! I for one still do not know if I want one-not to mention if I need one.
Frankly, Jono Slack's analysis will be most informing.
The EV1 is not on my short or long list. I feel if I need EVF for my M11, the VisoFlex 2 is just fine as is, for me and at a relative pittance compared to buying a new Leica camera.
But I am excited for its release and the fact that Leica was flexible/open-minded and able to make this happen for those that need/want it.

Another leaked image confirms a patch window, likely serving as a focusing aid. Still feels strange seeing a Leica M with no front viewfinder window.

Seems like they need a design element - like the logo - in that area but then it would even be more Q like I guess.

I actually find your variation design more appealing. My brain no longer fixates on the missing window...it just reads as a different concept altogether.
