Today I had a scary moment as I almost dropped my GFX100 RF to the street. Reason was that the strap had worked itself out from O-ring end fitting I suggest you to check your strap end fittings and replace if needd!

Fortunately I could grab the already almost free falling camera to my hand thanks to quick reflexes and the excellent SmallRig 5266 L-plate that greatly improves grip. This SmallRig accessory is highly recommended. It is really comfy and I think the better grip improves also camera stability when using longer times such as 1/30 sec

I have shot 5k+ images with RF and I am starting to feel familiar with it. I know what it can do (cropping moderately is an option) and what it cannot do (AF-C is a bit hit and miss, AF-S gives often better results also to moving subjects). Larger EVF makes it easy to work with my composition and there enough resolution to make minor cropping or keystone adjustments.

My RF has worked fine except that it has frozen totally 2-3 times. It recovers immediately when battery is taken out but I have to say this is a bit worrying. Maybe a new firmware will fix the problem. Anybody else having the same?

A few times I have also accidentally opened battery cover because of sliding my hand over the locking mechanism. I already considered taping the lock over (I always charge with usb-c), but SmallRig plate has moved this problem.

Images are ok. Actually more than ok GFX100 RF is a limiting camera but I do consider it a drawback in the context of typical photowalk photography. Until now I have photographed mostly urban things and family stuff. I plan to use it next for landscapes.

I actually really Iike the camera-

I am ok if it doesn’t sell Big thing for me is just my workflow- It doesn’t fit it. Fuji just hasn’t dialed in the on the go user expirence of their APPS and camera systems. I use an IPAD or a phone most of the time when traveling. The Fuji APP is awful to put it nicely. Also the transfer speeds wirelessly on this camera are awful as well. Compared to Leica or Hasselblad, Fuji is way behind in terms of the APP and transfer speeds.

Beyond that, I don’t really have any complaints. The 100MP sensor is great, the lens is great, the haptics are great-

I just find my self reaching for the Leica M-11p over this one. Espcially when I know I am going to be on the road.

Fuji embracing jpg but sucking with iPhone app is a strange combination

All manufacturers, not only Fuji, should get the connectivity problem sorted. My personal solution is to do raw post processing in C1 and while exporting jpg files upload them immediately to Apple Photos. I know it is slow and oldskool, but is mostly enough for me.

Make sure to set your wireless speed on the camera to 5GHz. It's set at 2GHz by default.

Now you are selling it? After all that? ;-)*

As to the app, I travel a lot with the XT5 and an iPad pro. I offload from the camera to the iPad while traveling, partially so that I can do initial work on the files while still on the road, and partially because I then let the iPad automatically upload the files to iCloud for a second, automatic level of file duplication/backup.

I never use any Fujifilm apps for this. You don’t need them to move files from camera to iPad. You should be able import them directly, though I usually allow the Pad version of LR to take care of this for me.

It also makes more sense, at least in my case, to connect the camera to the iPad with a USB-C cable than to use a wireless connection. For one thing, the iPad can be charging the camera in this configuration, particularly if you use the Apple keyboard that gives you a second USB-C port. (I also never carry a separate Fujifilm battery charger any more — I just charge the batteries directly in the camera.)

iPad file transfers of big image files are not fast. Has anyone transferred comparable file sizes from other cameras and Fujifilm files to compare? My sense is that the bottleneck isn’t the camera but either the iPad itself for the software running on the iPad. For example, when transferring from a card in a USB-C card reader rather than directly from the camera…things still seem slow.

* Speaking generally, there is a bit of a lesson here about how to regard the reports of new buyers of brand new products when reading them in camera forums. When we get a new product we all (I’m sometimes guilty, too) see only a combination of the good things and the things we hope to be true about it, overlooking the counterbalancing downsides. We want to believe that this thing we are about to spend a ton of money on or on which we have already spent a lot will live up to our dreams about it — but we have little experience yet to confirm our hopes.

Wth that in mind, to anyone out there reading breathless reports on this or any other brand new camera, it is probably a good idea to go a bit slowly, to wait for those early adopters to get a deeper and more balanced sense of the product, and to be cautious about reports from early adopters who see nothing but perfection in the product that they just bought.

YMMV.

None, taken.

With an ... "uncrop" mode for 28mm.

Most 100RF reviews I've read/watched say they don't intend to buy the camera and that the downsides outweigh the upsides. Those of us buying it are doing so in spite of the negative hype. This isn't an X100VI situation where everyone is gushing over it.

Would you buy a digital GF670?

The most common complain about GRX100RF is the f4 aperture. I agree with Fuji they don't want to make this camera any bigger, because the real selling point of this camera is the MF sensor in this small camera body.
Still maybe there is a solution if you want "MF look" in a thin, portable camera body, but with sacrifices. A digital version of GF670, a 44x33mm sensor paired with a foldable 45 f2 lens. In comparable size to GFX100RF because not have to accept 120mm roll film. Hybrid true rangefinder viewfinder, keeping the tilting screen. No digital leveller, no aspect ratio dial. But there is a catch, still no stabilisation, and no AF. Yes, no AF, because I don't think keeping the camera foldable and the lens small possible with AF.

When I was buying GFX100 RF the salesperson started a discussion about GF670. He was a real photographer and had studied Fujifilm marketing material well

I had GF670 for a few years. It was a nice camera but being a folder and having longer/brigter lens, I find it very different. Not to mention the film vs. digital difference and rangefinder vs. EVF.

Compared to film Fujifilms GFX100 RF and GF670W are actually quite close together. Both are 28mm eqv. wide angle angle and GF670W also has similar solid fixed lens as RF. I do not consider rangefinder vs. EVF difference that big. EVF has evolved to so much that both give excellent photographic experience. I think Fuji did a right and practical decision when dropping hybrid from RF.

Turning back to the now eternal discussion of f/4 lens. What would GFX100 RF be if had f/2.8 or 2 lens? We all know that for sure it would be larger, more expensive and more flexible camera. I would be very happy to have f/2.8 lens. But that might have made RF also critically more expensive. I do not know what would have been my decision had Leica Q3 and GFX100 RF been priced similarly... Much more than brighter lens I actually want IBIS.

I almost forgot the medium format look For that the digital mini MF sensor is maybe not large enough. FF sensor with a good lens like Sony 35 GM takes me further into that direction.

The rough rule of thumb for lenses is an extra stop doubles the cost of a lens, so I can understand why Fuji didn't go for an f2.8. F3.3-3.5 might have been an achievable compromise. But F4 and no IBIS at its current price point heavily compromises what otherwise seems a pretty interesting camera.

In this case RF viewfinder is a must because of manual focus, however I don't think impossible to implement RF focus into an EVF.
The reason I came with fold optic idea because to keep the GFX100RF size, but with a larger aperture lens. I don't see another solution, with just a fixed placed lens with F2 aperture the size advantage over GFX100SII is gone, at least the amount of worth it.
I quoted the MF look, because there is no such thing, it's a myth. There is low DOF paired with high resolution and dynamic range, it's manageable with a modern FF ILCE or MF digital camera, digital sensors are surpassed film resolution a long time ago, we don't need 6x9 digital sensor for high resolution. (6x9 has approximately 48 megapixels)

A few times I have manual focused GFX100 RF with the EVF microprism. If has classic wibe and it short of works, but frankly I think normal magnifier options work as well and is more straightforward to use.

I agree about the medium format look! Large sensor helps but it is not only about sensor size. In good light even high quality m43 lenses produce surprisingly good results :-)

A mechanical-only folding camera couldn't have the precision required to perfectly align the lens to a 100mp 44x33 sensor. Maybe if it were mechanical and was locked/held in final position by electromagnets, it could work. The lens itself would have to be "focused" to the sensor in real time, and that mechanism could function as IBIS. Sounds like an engineering nightmare, though.

Frame masking display tip for the 100RF:

I realized the other day that the Frame Outline option under Screen Setting > Disp. Custom Setting works in tandem with two modes of the Ratio and Crop/Zoom mask settings. Checking the Frame Outline option will show a gray frame outline around the image area in both the solid black mask and semi-transparent mask display modes. The white outline is helpful, because in the black mask mode, it can be impossible to see the frame edges when shooting dark scenes otherwise. And when using the semi-transparent mask, I find it slower than I like to discern the mask border without a frame outline.

I couldn't resist pulling the trigger with the BILD Expo 5% discount and no tax deal.

I brought it with me to San Diego for a test run after getting it and was not happy with the results. While it's a beautiful camera to look at and use, I was pretty close to returning it because I'm spoiled by modern mirrorless. I assume this might be the case for most because the camera isn't what you expect. However, my favorite camera of all time is still the GFX 50R and 50mm F3.5 which also lacks IBIS (albeit a bit faster lens). I also used the GF670 for awhile 6-7 years ago and the RF reminds me of that experience. Recognizing the camera pros and cons allows me to fully enjoy using it. It's small, light and fun to use. Also allows me to actually enjoying my 2500 miles roadtrip with wife and 2 kids up the California coast to Oregon and back without lugging around heavy gear. Night and day compare to the days I used to carry a GFX 100s and a 45-100mm with a bag full of GF lenses! As backup, I brought along my Lumix S1R II, 24-60mm and new Sigma 150-600mm and wished I left them at home because I didn't use or need it once.

One thing I made sure to purchase, which I have not used since shooting film, is a circular polarizer which made a HUGE difference, for me at least. Here are some samples from the 1750+ images from the trip.

The second and last picture are the best examles where does GFX100RF excell. The beach where childs running around, 100MP resolution makes lot of enviroment into content and same time on a large print or zoomed in you still have plenty of detail about your subejcts, not fading away just to an unrecognisable human shapes.
The last shot speaks itself, urban architecture also the perfect subject for 100RF.
