Thus, there is a conveniently sized 100RF with an excellent viewfinder located in the upper left corner, and not in the center (for many, including me, this is important) which can only be considered a competitor to the Leica Q3, since the Sony A7cr viewfinder is no good and Sony does not have a high-quality 28mm lens. Advantages of the Leica Q3: a higher quality and brighter lens. Advantages of the 100RF: a wider dynamic range, fairly high-quality face recognition, tracking, fast switching between different shooting modes, a slightly higher quality EVF (shadows are much better visible), a conveniently implemented digital zoom and crop factor. ...Show more →
As far I know it's pair optically with Leica Q3 43 instead of Q3's 28mm lens.
The RF's AF is a big deal, I find it quite good (my referece also A7RV), Q3 is not suited for my kids.

The RF has the obvious size advantage, especially the pancake lens weight center in the small camera body.
But other thoughts:
GM has f1.4 aperture and extremely sharp even wide open.
I intentionally made crops from the center area (Im interested mainly in cropping ability), and as you saw I represented FF cropped images of RF to match with 35GM+A7RV, in this case not a disadvantage for the RF because cutted of image edges, 35GM had to work on the whole frame. Sure I don't expect from a pancake lens outstanding corner to corner sharpness.
35GM IQ is not a minimum expectation, it is the reference quality in my case.
It was just a quick comparison, I don't expect anybody draw a conclusion, I'm not a professional gear reviewer. ...Show more →
I wasn't "complaining" about the "fairness" ... just wanted to make sure I understood, correctly. Imo, there is a distinct correlation of expectation associated to the amount of glass that gets brought to the table. I mean, bring an Otus, and I expect one thing. Bring a Holga and I expect something else.
+1 as a "reference" (vs. a shootout).
Seeing how "far behind" something is ... and the ability to retain appreciation in that, is something that some folks do better than others. Some, not so much.

I think that if you take the central crop of the FF size from a large camera (8 by 10 inches), it will also lose to the 35GM image. However, if you take the entire images and print them in the same size, the comparison will be very much against the 35GM. So does such a comparison make sense? The quality of the 35GM within the focal lengths of 28-35 is generally 0, since its width is not enough to cover everything. Choose a lens for Sony with a focal length of 28 and then it makes sense to compare the quality. Even in this case, you will be comparing a compact camera with a significantly larger combination. The 100RF is primarily a compact with a 28 equivalent. Its zoom capabilities are secondary. No one will buy the 100RF to shoot exclusively at 35 or 50 focal lengths.
+1 that you can't (fully) compare a 28mm optic vs. a 35mm (particularly across format diff's). The wider you go, the tougher it gets.
Quite simply, the wider we are spreading the light across our film plane ... the thinner that spread is gonna be on the surface. Once we "resize it" to the final print ... well, one pat of butter on a slice of bread looks thinner than the same amount of butter on a cracker. Some folks prefer a "thin spread", others like a more concentrated flavor, in a smaller package. Recognizing how the light disperses farther across the wider film plane, the same number of photons (for a "correct" exposure) will have a different concentration / density on the surface. Looking at large format negs on a loupe, will look "less sharp" than looking at 35mm slides. But, when printed ... to a given size, the 35mm will now have to be "spread more" to achieve a given print size, than the large format will. That's where the diff's then reverse / offset that concentration of converging / diverging light. Wider = more diverging. Pretty straightforward. Expectations should factor that understanding, into consideration. Again, not a complaint wrt the comp ... just an understanding of the diff's should be retained in understanding what is being looked at.
As to the utility of the GFX 100RF, I can easily see it being a 28-40-ish. By that, I mean when it is shot 4:3 vs. 3:4 it flips from a 28mm 100MP to a 35mm 50MP (approximate to FF) with ease. Punching in a kiss more from 3:4 to get 40-ish will be trivial.
Granted, you still have the perspective of the native 35mm lens, even if you punch in, but it's not like you're trying to take a 28mm native and get an 85mm compression, kind of jump.

35GM and RF glass both 35mm focal length. I think the comparison is fair enough, 35mm to a 35mm and the same time I cropped the MF sensor surface to FF area. Of course there are several other comparison methods, the question what is the priority. My priority was how the RF glass works on same sensor surface as the reference quality 35GM, this was the closest fair comparison with the gear I own. If somebody has a $1000+ value 28mm prime can make a comparison how work the glass and sensor combination together, I was interested in the optical performance only.

^ahhh yes I think some people are just really into very specific details for whatever reason ... so always a parallel conversation going on. When I see a lot of numbers being referenced I just skip past as virtually none of that applies to me hahaha

It is getting to be time to make some prints from the various options, hang them on the wall, and see how immaterial some of the details people obsess about in this thread really are.

Why handicap the MF sensor camera in the comparison?

Pretty much everyone in the US who is going to get one in the next 2 months should already have theirs.
Judging by this thread, it's not many people.
And yeah, mine showed up today, but I'm not going to open it for a week.

People who ordered via Amazon should be receiving theirs at the beginning of May
Just wondering if Amazon is going to actually ship it in the first week of May?
I got that notice too.
The Fujifilm representative that I talked to last Saturday said that they are not sending anything out. So, if you didn’t receive it already, there is no timeline right now that is realistic. He said he’s also been kept in the dark on when the next batch of these cameras will ship to retailers.
So, I don’t have any expectations from Amazon’s expected ship date.
B&H told me that my order there might take 2 months or later as Fujifilm is not commenting on when they will ship the next batch to them.
Maybe Amazon will surprise me with an on-time shipping and I can cancel my duplicate order at B&H.

I got mine, I pre-ordered a black version on 4/3/25 from my local camera store. They got 4 total units and I was the fourth one as most people wanted silver. So far I am enjoying the camera as I knew what I was getting and what I wanted out of a camera.
