I really liked the face detection on the GFX100RF. Even if the person is far away and their face takes up a small area of the frame, the camera finds them. False positive results are negligible compared to the Q3. Tracking also works very well. And one of the important advantages over the Q3: in case of failure, face detection can be instantly turned off by pressing just one button to switch to spot autofocus and not lose the frame.

I agree, as odd as it feels to say I expect the GFX100RF’s autofocus system will be superior to the Q3’s. Much as I like that camera, the vaunted AF improvements were pretty minor and Leica haven’t done much to improve them since release. My Q3 regularly thinks all sorts of inanimate objects are faces - a phenomenon I’ve run into with many cameras but most have long since ironed out, and the Q is particularly partial to it. On balance I’m not sure that makes the GFX superior for my needs, but it is part of the calculation.

A bit overstated. My X2D with the 38mm XCDv lens isn’t big and it is very comfortable in the hand. Other XCD lenses are smaller. My A7CR with any one of a number of f/2.0-f/4.0 lenses is smaller and has IBIS. The RF is just another camera with a set of tradeoffs..like any camera.
Fuji have positioned the camera as the smallest medium format camera that anyone can buy so all the full frame alternatives are not in competition and the Hasselblad is bigger.
That is there sales pitch and its true.

One of the pro reviews that used it - I think it was Keith wee - say the af is better on the q3 compared to the Gfx. In my experience for photos the q3 43mm af more than keeps up. For video, I think the x100vi is superior but I don’t know how the mf sensor will impact that.

Agree the X2D is bigger and heavier. I suspect that the RF will have autofocus features that won’t be found in the X2D, but that should be remedied in version II. The real advantage of the RF is price.

In one point, the Q3 43 in AFS mode focuses faster, in dim light too. However, AF-C, face detection and tracking are only available in the GFX100RF, while in the Q3 28/43 all of this is in such a state that it is almost impossible to use.

I have both the x100vi and q3 43mm apo and af-c works perfectly fine for both for photos. No issues on my end so not sure what you’re talking about. For video, I think the x100vi af performs better - I have to use zone focus mode on the q3 otherwise the eye af hunts a lot.
Neither camera manufacturers can compare to the quality of Sony af so if af is what matters most, than the a7c series might be a better option than either cameras.

Maybe it’s a settings issue? Get it off of iaf and just use af-c with face detect. I also crank up the shutter speed to minimize motion blur related issues.

Q3 28/43 gave such a number of false positive results that at home I felt like I was living in a hostel full of people

I've done that, gave up on it a long time ago. The issue is that the camera detects a lot of false positives, so it's constantly refocusing on some other not-face in the frame. If you actually do have more than one person in the frame, then absolutely forget about using it. This may be better on a Q3 43 – I haven't used one yet – simply by virtue of the narrower focal length.
My experience with Fujis - most recently the X-T5 - is that they may inaccurately report they focused on a face, but at least they reliably find and stick to a single face, which tends to actually be a face, and they offer better direct control the feature.
Like IBIS, this is also something I can live without... but it's disappointing given the Q3's AF was advertised as such a leap forward. I think the GFX will actually do a bit better with faces, though I wouldn't be surprised if AF speed overall may be a bit slower.

Collected mine on Tuesday. As an owner of all the X100s and all the X-Pros, couldn’t be happier. Not much to say about the autofocus, minimal handheld shutter speed etc etc etc as I am out shooting. Files look lovely so far…..

I would be interested in any fuji user who tried the ne gfx100rf and would also have used the Sony rx1rii. I have the later and would see if it would provide an updated alternative to my aging camera. I love it a lot, super small, ultra sharp and discreet, but some thing are just getting really old. I do not care that much for the lack of IBIS as my camera doesn’t have any although it is a bit faster with a max aperture of f2.0.

A pleasant video, a little light on meaningful content. The title is a bit click bait compared to the content. I bet he's not GFX knowledgeable and was using the 16 bit rather than 14 bit Raw setting. That likely contributed to his slow down problems with the camera and his computer processing big batches. He certainly was impressed with the AF performance.

AF works very well in this camera, face recognition is also at a high level. It is not suitable for sports, but with regular shooting on the street, the autofocus easily copes.

Having read many of these interesting discussions I feel comforted in my impression that what we really need is for Nikon or Sony to release their own modern version of a high end fixed lens camera with either a stacked sensor or global shutter, fast high quality lens and IBIS.
I believe they would both perform significantly better and be a better price to performance to bulk compromise for the typical use cases of such cameras.
I would probably feel different if the MF myth still worked on me.
So I’ll wait until something truly appealing shows up.
