I feel like I would be in the target market, because the overall feature set, particularly the crop dial appeals to me. But the price is just too much for me, despite having a bit of spare cash. A $A 8500 camera with an f4 lens, which will struggle to get subject isolation, is just too expensive. If they made an APS-C version I'd probably bite.

I really struggle with this too. The truth is for those of us who are okay with APS-C quality and don't print exhibition quality, fine art gallery-sized prints, the X100VI already has much of the functionality of the GFX100RF.

For someone like me, whose output is more than adequately covered by 24 megapixels, and isn't entirely SOOC, the X100VI actually has the advantage if you're willing to carry the conversion lenses. It has the advantage if you're willing to use a hack to emulate framelines for a 65:24 or 17:6 aspect ratio crop.

But isn't the point having gear that doesn't get in the way?

Hacks to get panoramic get in the way. Workflow, ergonomics, visualizing tools in the field, this all matters and sacrificing even marginal time or mental energy to make it work, all that stuff, gets in the way. Carrying or not carrying conversion lenses gets in the way.

When you spend hours and hours of every day doing this, where else are you going to invest your money or spend your disposable income?

It's a tough question and I suppose I see others like me in this thread with their own sincere answers.

Still - I genuinely hope Fuji pushes 65:24 down to the X series cameras with 40 megapixel sensors via firmware. The dial is nice, but I imagine many of us can live with a Q menu item or custom function button. I have to believe doing so will not meaningfully cannibalize any GFX sales.

Honestly, you should more like a candidate for (among Fujifilm cameras) the X100vi or possibly the XT5 with the right lens(es). (A couple of small primes on the XT5 and you’ve got the coverage issue licked.)

YMMV.

Tariff Update: I checked with B&H this evening after the 24% tariff on Japanese products was announced today as part of "Liberation Day". Ben of B&H assured me that the 100RF price to me would not change because I had pre-ordered. That pre-tariff price is still up there right now:

This is very sensible thinking -- it's always the feel of things that determines how a tool clicks with you or not. Sadly the X-E4 isn't it, due to the viewfinder for me. I'm coming down from an OVF, so each sacrifice makes it less and less an enjoyable experience. Small and low res is too much. Mine's for sale for that reason.

The X100VI isn't it either (I've owned the X100V) because there are just too many ways it gets in the way of shooting anything but 3:2. And while I don't mind the WCL at all, it's not ideal, as a 28mm shooter. I admit this is nitpicking but the V most often stayed home despite it being great for me on paper. It's just too overshadowed by the other 28mm 3:2 cameras (GRIII and M10).

Thus the GFX100RF interest, which opens up the aspect ratios. For me it's all about ergonomics and ease of use. Not getting in the way of shooting. And yes, there is some interest to see if I find some value in the 44x33 image quality, or extreme cropping ability.

The X-T5+18mm F2 is the closest and if they upgraded that firmware to add 65:24 (which they absolutely should), it would be a top candidate, and your logic is absolutely sound. Truthfully though, I'm waiting for the X-Pro 5, assuming they do add that functionality. I agree won't have an OVF any more, but hopefully has an excellent EVF as a result.

The X-E5 will, I imagine, have a cheap EVF and be disappointing for that reason.

They never give us the camera we really want, so we do what we can do. Well, the GRIII was an exception for us zone focusing street shooters, but now we need better low light performance in a GRVI.

A few things:

I produce photographs with a range of aspect ratios: My default is 4:3, but I also like 16:9, square, occasionally 2:1, and sometimes much wider panoramic formats.

You can easily do this with any camera’s output. I have a set of preset aspect ratio crops in ACR and Photoshop, and I can apply them easily. And because I use them enough, I’m familiar enough with how they look that I can anticipate how they will look when shooting, even though I sometimes decide during post to use a different crop than I anticipated at the time of exposure.

I used to shoot the XPro2. It was a fine camera, and I made tens of thousands of exposures with it. Before the XPro3 was released, I was thinkingI would upgrade to it, but when it arrived it was truly underwhelming and in many ways I liked the Xpro2 better. So I thought maybe I would wait for the theoretical XPro4. I waited years, and believed that it would come. But it finally became clear that it was not going to be. (I got the XT5 at that point, and I’m very happy with it.)

I think that waiting for an XPro5 (though it really should be the XPro4, right?) is not a very promising strategy. Who knows, it might actualy come. But more likely, based on everything Fujifilm actually says (and on what they don’t say), there’s absolutely no solid reason to expect that the next XPro is coming any time soon.

I used to think that I strongly preferred the OVF, but over time as I got used to shooting with EVF cameras I realized that they are actually very good and even have real world advantages over OVF displays. I don’t miss it at all now. In fact, when I got back to my DSLR system and look through its viewfinder… I don’t actually like it that much.

YMMV.

That's why I went ahead and pre-ordered today. I had been on the fence because it's a lot of money, but this and other cameras will be a lot more money a month or two from now, once current inventory is sold through.

The truth is I have all the cameras I need... plus a couple. If these tariffs stick, it may be a while before I'm upgrading any of them.

Yes the truth is anything that the GFX100 RF can do can already be done with other cameras and lenses, though the camera/lens combination may not be as small.

I'll content myself with my X-T5 and X-T30ii combo. Having tested these against the Sony A7Riii, there really is no visible difference for most shots viewed on a 4k 28inch screen.

Those are some wonderful framing examples, thank you. It does make sense that the more one does it, the easier one sees it.

Second hand Fujifilm X70 is not expensive...

I think anyone wanting very thin DOF is best served with FF camera and f/1.2 or 1.4 lens. Just buy the brand you like most.

I would think most preorders are already state side, and everyone in b&h’s back office were likely home for the day

Yep. Was thinking about this too... I was considering this camera. I went back to look at how I took photos on my last two vacations with family and realized I (1) walked around with an X-pro 2 with my 35 w2 on it (2) used x-pro 2 with 18-55 shooting at either 18 or 55 or (3) used my iPhone

I'm curious if they will add the same features as the x100VI like Pano. In researching, GFX100RF, I was looking at the 100vi manual and saw that the camera had a Panoramic feature to take in camera panos. I was going to wait until GFX100RF was released to see but maybe I preorder.....

For any 100VI owners, have you used the in camera pano feature and if so, does it work both horizontal and vertical?

Great video! Especially the part when he says "Now is everything. If I don't cherish the present, there's no meaning in taking photos".

Threads like this one make me wonder how many people actually enjoy photography.

I'm thinking Fuji's business model is to push up the value chain, looking to make small production runs of unique cameras, which will allow them to sell all their production at high prices.

Thank you!

You mentioned another feature that blew me away and made the GFX100RF my first Fujifilm preordered camera.
The aspect ratio.

I applaud Fujifilm for including it, in a readily available dial on the camera, even though it’s available in other cameras as a menu item. It really opens more creative possibilities as I see it. This made me realize that photographers played a significant part in the design of this camera,

I know you can do this later in computer, but I feel seeing how the moment looks with these different aspect ratios when you experience it makes a difference.

It really opens up creative possibilities in the moment, at least as far as my creative process works.

I don’t doubt that there are a lot of exceptional photographers who do this in post, but I’m more of a ”in the moment’ photographer.

I may be a little weird, but I enjoy the process or act of taking photos more than reviewing them later, and definitely more than editing and preparing the final image. It probably has something to do with getting off the couch, out into nature and fresh air, and clearing my mind. Photographing around town can release the same endorphins if the subjects are good.

You are not weird. I'm like that too. While I occasionally get to go out on serious photo shooting trips when travelling or photo oriented day trips, unfortunately these are far too few to satisfy my urges. So I also take a lot of photos on dog walks and while doing other errands. While I download and view them and aim to think how I could have made a better pic, the main fun is in the taking.
