Thank you Robert, Peire!
This particular B-29 is called "Doc", produced in March 1945 but never participated in combat. It was abandoned in desert over more than 40 years and took 15 years to rebuild it. It flew for the first time in 2016 since 1956. It's one of the only two airworthy B-29s in the world today. I am not sure if I had seen 'Doc" before but I have seen the other one "FIFI" quite a few times. FIFI is currently in the "shop" so technically "Doc" is the only flyable B-29 right now.
I didn't know if the 400mm on the 400-800 would be too long for Doc so I had a 100-400 GM on another A1, turned out 400mm was no problem for this location. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to get a single sharp shot of Doc at 1/100 and miss the opportunity. I ended up having quite a few good ones.

Some from the weekend at Bombay Hook NWR. Very happy with the performance of the 400-800mm. It locked on birds in flight very quickly, even with the low light on the first shot with the mallard. The heron in the reeds was tricky and required full time DMF to get the focus on the bird. That one was tricky.

I had the 100-400 GM on an A1 but didn't use it on the jets, only on Fat Albert. I should have used the 100-400 for the whole show and called it a day..
The 300 f/2.8 might have been perfect on it's own.

God I wished we had airshows (and weather) like that, these are out of this world.
Man that B29 must be something to see
Thank you John! I like to see a Lancaster flying but may never have the opportunity. The B-29 "Doc" is one of the two airworthy B-29s, actually the other one "FIFI" is in the "shop" right now. so "Doc" is the only game in town. "Doc" will be flying in a big warbirds show this weekend 2 hours from me. Will try to see it again, along a rebuilt Focke-Wulf/ Flug Werk FW-190A and a ME 262 (replica).

Cross-posted this image in a different thread but I added a significant crop from the same file here... I actually got 4 similar looks of this falcon in the sequence of 20fps that just took off. The first image is already cropped moderately

Messerschmitt Me 262, " Schwalbe" was the world's first operational jet fighter developed by Nazi Germany, it served in the tail end of WWII, too late to turn the tide. About 1400 were produced, whatever left from the war are all museum pieces, none is flyable. Five replicas were build in the US in the 1990's and the 2000's from plans created during the restoration of an original Me 262 now on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. Only three of the five replicas are airworthy, one in Germany, one in Texas, and this one belongs to the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia.
Even though this is a replica, it's extremely rare to see one flying, this is my first time, I believe.

Those shots are awesome! That was my favorite WWII airplane model growing up!
Thank you! I have seen the real thing at different museums. Even though this is a replica but seeing it flying is a big big deal to a lot of aviation fans.
Here are a few more of the Me 262 from different angles, and a Focke-Wulf/ Flug Werk FW-190A that belongs to the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, also a replica, I believe.

I hope folks don't mind me sneaking in another non 400-800 shot. The 400-800 would have been too long for this B-29. The 400-800 is not wide enough for the large planes and formations but 800mm can be very useful 50% of the time. It's really a tradeoff between the 200-600 and the 400-800, depending on which end one camps at more. The focal range of the Canon 200-800 would be ideal for airshows.
