Finally reached a point of diminishing returns with these little guys, where the DOF is so thin at 800mm, half their face, one of their feet, or the tip of their beak can be out of focus. Side profile shots are nice and basically completely eliminate the background.

Not great IQ, dealing with the wildfire smoke and a massive crop, but I spotted this humming bird at the very tip of a birch tree. Would like to recreate this shot a bit closer and in better conditions and with more MP.

For me it was all about not having to use a TC on the 200-600 and of course having a portable long reach lens.
Not a big deal for the slight weight gain for me, impressive close focus at 400mm, for me faster focusing than the 200-600. I shot my 2-600 at f/8 90% of the time so f/8 was not a limiting factor. The reach is a huge benefit for birding, I am more inclined for more reach to simply go APSC mode.

I use both of them equally, but I do believe that my 400-800 is sharper than my 200-600, but there are times that
having 200mm is more important.

Thank you for the reply. Looks like I need to look for 400-800 lens. I was hoping that I can get by with 200-600 and use 1.4x when I need more reach but I think the biggest factor in favor of 400-800 is the new AF system that should "technically" be faster with newer cameras.
