p.6 #1 · New release Sigma 300-600mm f/4 Full frame
In this review "https://dariuszbres.pl/sigma-300-600-4-dg-os-sports" he claims Z9 is than the A1. See below
"...And I used it with Sony A7R5, Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 via Megadap Pro.
The most enjoyable photography was with Nikon Z9, the viewfinders and speed of this can are unmatched .
In second place Sony A7R5 and in last Sony A1, I got the impression that it worked worse than A7R5.
A1 is an old camera and for example you can see the lag of the viewfinder during continuous shooting, something like old Nikon Z6.
Probably they improved it in version II, unfortunately I had no opportunity to check.
Z9 has dual stream, separate for photo and viewfinder and therefore there is no chance of lagging it and everything works smoothly.
In addition, connecting Atomos does not turn off the viewfinder and LCD like in the case of Sony.
This is about cameras by the way, because of course 300-600 has no effect on this..."
For those that has both A1 and Z9, any comments on the claims?
I used Z9 and A1 (one of my fiends has both) and I did not find Z9 beater (AF and AF tracking).

Thanks for posting that link. I watched some of his videos with EVF recordings. The lens adapted well to the Nikon Z9. Nikon owners do have a great adapter option if there are Sony lenses they like. And ironically I think they get 20FPS where Sony users with the native lens can only get 15FPS....what a #$%$ joke...
Z9/Z8 have progressed via FW quite a lot. I've owned Z9 twice. The first time on original FW and the second time on 3.X FW which was still before the Bird mode and improvements to Auto AF. I then borrowed a Z8 from a friend once it had the Bird mode and Auto AF improvements.
My general impressions is that Z9 subject detect/BEAF is a bit better than A1 when the bird isn't presenting a great pose. But once the bird presents in a position/head angle that you'd actually want to photograph the cameras are equal. But it is still better to have a subject/eye detect that holds the head when bird turns away as it is faster for it to come back to the eye when it presents better. Sony does like to jump to other parts of the bird. A1II has improved this somewhat. Canon is well ahead of both Nikon/Sony in Subject/Eye-AF.
But for BIF and shooting where eye-AF is not the main factor, I still liked the A1 AF in Wide (non-tracking) better than the Z9 in Auto. The A1II has improved a bit more with more consistent hit rate. A1 can still pick up over complicated backgrounds better and from further away. Although the Z9 has improved a lot on its latest 4.0/5.0 FW after the Bird mode and Auto AF improvements came along.
I still feel the A1/A1II, A9III are better for my type of BIF/action biased photography than the Z9....if for nothing else the extra 10-100FPS and now RAW precapture in the two latest cameras. I still trust the AF a bit more on the Sony cameras than the Nikon.
The 300GM is also keeping me shooting Sony. Seeing how well Sony can adapt to Nikon I'm sure I will buy Z9II day one to test it out as I would like to own the Nikon 400TC and I could adapt my 300GM or get the 600PF as a replacement.
As for the EVF, the Z9 does have a smoother image because of the dual-stream but the resolution and poor contrast let it down. Overall I prefer the A1 EVF despite the slight more lag and a little jump back to reality when letting off actively firing. I found the Z9 EVF very difficult to judge accurate exposure even with WYSIWYG and Histogram. I guess I may be too reliant on Sony Zebras in stills that I've used for many years now.

To "arbitrage", thank you for the info, I appreciate you honest opinion.
The PF Nikon glass is really seducing me.... And now this new Sigma lens is working or seems to be working with Z8 camera, and the 20FPS and the Sigma extender if they will make one for Sony.... and the other Sony glass could be used with Nikon... I could buy just an adapter for the glass, the speed lights and the trigger for Nikon and I'll have two working systems. Still cheaper than switching, I switched ones, from Canon, lost tons of money, you guys know what I mean. Great conversation. Thank you for the feedback on Nikon + Sigma glass(for Sony).

The video reviews for this lens should start dropping in the next few days. I doubt that the Sigma will be as sharp as the Sony, after all few zoom lenses are as sharp as primes, so the question will be; Is it sharp enough ?
The option to zoom would be great for field sports, when the action gets closer to the photographer, they sometimes have to quickly switch to a backup camera, this might negate that need.
The weight is a non-issue for me, the 15fps I could live with. As Jared Polin pointed out - for those with a1II or A9III turning on pre-capture at 15fps for a full second, technically provides 30 frames in one shutter release.

I'm trying to work this statement out. So you have pre capture set at 1 second in that 1 second you get 15 frames then you fully press recording the 15 frames and the frames you get after fully pressing. I see this as still 15 frames a second as the rate hasn't increased to greater than 15fps. Am I right?

Yes it’s still only 15 frames, I think what he is saying is that you’ve got 30 frames with one push and that increases the chance of getting that one perfect frame.

It's 15 fps. End of story. It's up to the buyer to decide if that is acceptable to them.
The really, really, really clever buyer might even consider weight, ability to zoom, price etc
Obviously, that very simple fact is not worthy of any clicks.
I know, I can zoom in then out in one wrist release.
HEADLINE FEATURE!
The Sigma 300-600 can zoom 600mm with one wrist release.
Not to Fro: If you use that, I expect a kick back.

There are very few zooms with parfocals.
The optical scheme would be enormously complicated, I find it rather normal that it is not, if it was also parfocal....it would simply be the best zoom ever made (and it is already close).

As a birder where I am now. This lens would be a godsend if sharp. 300-600 would be amazing at the feeders in Colombia, Ecuador. I could bag some jaw dropping shots with that zoom. I don't understand why they don't give the lens to specialist in each field? What a waste,

I'm not watching these "talking heads" they will do/say anything for a "click". Will wait for real people opinion...Arbitrage! Yo! Come on, get as some real info, something to think about...

The latest fad in advertising YouTube. What a clown show. It used to be and still is to some extent guys that ran the tours and run web sites. Now they are turning to YouTube because of the money. Insane.
Funny story: Was up in the mountains the other day. Really remote site. Was shooting at a feeder and I heard a beep beep beep. I walked out and there were two huge Mercedes vans pulling in. The doors flew open and about 5 guys and one lady piled out in full camo costumes... hahaha. I sat and watched for a while and they did not even go out to bird. Straight to the kitchen taking pics with the staged kids avalible... The locals transformed into a stage show in a heart beat when the tour showed up.. It was a site to see. Kinda reminds me of the YouTube nonsense.
As a side note, the lady that runs the place came out about an hour before the group arrived and told me a tour was coming and it was going to get crazy. As soon as they arrived I packed up and silently exited stage left... haha

They did not go into much detail, probably because they did not have the e-mount version of the lens.
The camera they had is no match for an a1/a9. Hopefully they will post a more informative video when the get an e-mount version and can do a straight up comparison using Sony cameras.
