p.5 #2 · New release Sigma 300-600mm f/4 Full frame
I am not blown away by Sigma samples and by samples provided by lens tip. Maybe they did something wrong. Sigmas samples are shot on very high iso and 33 Mpx sensor. But so far in terms of sharpness I doubt it will rival the primes. Sigmas own 500 included.
Still its a feat to make such a glass and kudos to sigma. Maybe it will turn out that lower IQ but greater vertisality is overall a better deal for many? I have no doubts that the primes have better IQ but I expected the gap to be smaller. Like I wrote - maybe inital samples are just bad and the lens is better in production and in the field.

Just joined here, apparently there is an entire world on the internet discussing these topics, ha. Checked out lenstip, too. The pics seem to have a focus issue, not a sharpness issue, to my eye, at least. The eyes are not sharp; looks like it's back focusing a bit. Back in the day I had a Nikon 50mm 1.8 that was really sharp but I was excited to upgrade to the 50mm 1.4, except my photos looked exactly like the samples for the Sigma, and worse than the 1.8. Chalk one up to just being happy with what you already have.
That said, reach and speed at that cost sounds so appealing to me. I def. want to try out that Sigma, and the 300GM, as a next lens (after a body upgrade first).

A new function ring can be configured to control one of two settings, depending on how its settings switch is set: in Focus Preset Mode, turning the ring will instantly shift focus to a pre-registered position. In Power Focus Mode, turning the ring allows for constant speed focus pulling (useful during video shooting) and the focus speed can be changed in two steps.

I understand your point; but from the consumers point of view, the Sony lens is over-priced compared to the Sigma.
This of course assumes that the image quality and focus speed is comparable.
That's ridiculous - that's like saying the A1 is overpriced compared to the R5ii without qualifying that by saying "for shooting slow moving subjects a long way off".

Really ?
If Sony removed the 15fps restriction, and removed the TC restriction, how many people would choose the $13,000 lens over the $6,000 lens, the answer is not many.
The Sony markup is obvious, the reason for the artificial limits on 3rd party lenses is also obvious.
The limitations only really affect a1/a9 users (with regard to fps). Sony may lose some lens sales to 3rd party but would likely gain additional customers for those cameras due to the massive variety of unrestricted lenses that are available for the platform.
If Sony does abolish the artificial restrictions, those that bought the Sony 600mm would see the resale value of that lens fall through the floor.

I'm still happy to be convinced, but going by the samples starting to appear I'd say the IQ from the 600gm lens is looking a lot better than the sigma. I get sharper shots with the 2x than those linked above.

I currently have #2 and #3 (and the alternative #1 in f/2.8 flavor) and am perfectly happy
Intrigued by #4 but wary of its slow speed so will wait for some user reviews, and also intrigued by #5 but aware it would be virtually un-handholdable and therefore outside my wheelhouse unless my wildlife photography patterns change.

I don't really like the way this review is written, but he basically says the Sigma is indistinguishable from the Nikon 600TC prime in the center. The corners are better on the prime.

That's the first time I have noticed that the 300 has a bayonet hood instead of the screw / wedge setup.
Obviously I was not looking, quite obvious in most photos.
30 photos on BnH, but only 1 shows what looks like a button / lever release on the side of the hood.
I'm glad the 400-800 also has one of those.
My 200-600 hood is taped on. It came loose several times during carry.
I've had 3 200-600s so not a specific hood / lens issue.

Not wanting to be overly critical of the guy, but the raws he posted don't look good to me. That he posted a really low quality side by side with the nikon 600 on SAR when asked about it, shows he's not really looking to maxmise the output IQ imo.

Obviously it's entirely personal once the lens is "sharp enough". To me both the 100% comparisons from the review and downloadable RAWs look alright, but 600GM should be sharper based on the price alone ...

I went to the Sigma NYC popup and tried the lens. It's definitely a bit heavier than I thought (I'm weak), so it's monopod/tripod only for me if I were to get one. Can't comment in terms of AF because I don't know how to use a Lumix camera (s5ii) that was attached to the lens. Built like a tank. But seems like they used more high quality plastic on the outside for weight savings. In terms of sharpness I can't tell from the evf and the zoomed in images, it seems sharp on the evf zoomed in, but might not be on a larger monitor.
The BF camera is not very ergonomic. I definitely would not buy one, not because of anything else, just because it's so damn hard to hold it stable with my hands, constantly worry about slipping.
On that end, I went to B&H's superstore and bought a 300 f2.8 and curious to try it out.
