That was indeed me. I really liked the M version because of the size, character and ergonomics. I did not like the performance on a Sony sensor stack. So, when CV announced the e-mount version, I sold my m-mount copy and purchased the e-mount. I never had both lenses at the same time.
If you look at the reviews, I think you’ll see a weaker mid-zone up till about 2.4 to 2.8. I also tested this and posted crops which you can see on the original 28/1.5 m-mount review by Fred. It is just part of the lens design. Again, I haven’t tested the e-mount, but I believe the optical weaknesses will be the same whether you’re shooting M or E unless the lens has been tweaked in someway.
I think your expectations are probably too high. This is a lens that exhibits some field curvature, a good amount of Longitudinal CA, and a weaker periphery than the center until stopped down a bit. Contrast wide open in the central part of the frame should be quite good though. Did you formally check to see if you have a decentered copy?
The e version was just a bit too big for my tastes, and I disliked the long focus throw. I also missed the focus tab. And I didn’t like the e-mount enough to shoot it a lot like the m, but I did feel like it was a bit smoother structurally or a bit different contrast wise. Having said that, I did not test the lens systematically to determine that. I also did not shoot the lens that much because of what I said above.
But, to be honest, I think you should prepare to be disappointed on the Simera 28/1.4 front. I highly doubt it has been tweaked to work better on Sony despite it was released for Sony. Here is a screenshot from the comment section of Bastian’s review:...Show more →
Thank you very much, nehemiahphoto. I did check to see if it was decentered (first thing I did) but with how poor the performance is at f1.5 and with my a7cii, I could hardly tell either way to be fully honest.
Contrast and performance in the center seems fine. Around the midfield, even at f5.6 if I pay attention there, it looks ... not great, or even good. Honestly, every image just looks like something isn't quite right with the light, as if it's not as clean as it should be.
I think you're right, I went in expecting close to the nokton 50mm f1.2 in 28mm focal length for some reason, maybe with some more structure to the out of focus areas, but it's just not even close and it's the parts that are in-focus that cause me the most issue. Just doesn't look like premium image quality, like the 50 does (outside of the glow).
This is a lens that exhibits some field curvature, a good amount of Longitudinal CA, and a weaker periphery than the center until stopped down a bit.
I'll double check what's said about the 28mm APO and wait I guess, will try to make do with the sigma 35mm f2.
Would rather not go xf18mm f1.4 if I can avoid it, keeping my fujis small. But I do like 28mm with apsc with the larger depth of field, let's see.
Sorry for the tangent folks, I'm still looking forward to your thoughts on this one though.
