Does the R5 Mark II conduct 14-bit A/D conversion for all shutter modes? On the R5 it decreased to 13-bit for H+ and 12-bit for electronic shutter.

Edit: in the videos they released today, both Jan Wegener and Petapixel claim it is always 14-bit.

So the R5 II is confirmed to shoot 14-bit at all times including high-speed shooting and using the e-shutter?

The AF comment is funny indeed. The Z8 is 1+ years old but it's still focusing on the nose/eye lashes.

If you aren't using pre-capture it doesn't mean it's a gimmick. I bet many Z8 shooters are ignoring pre-capture simply because it's storing files in JPEG.

The "value to performance" is an individual ratio. I agree - for a Nikon shooter with a bunch of Nikon glass there is zero value in

Understood. If you look at intro pricing vs value on both cameras or the prices if someone were to choose a camera right now, the Z8 still comes out ahead. I have heard of the focus on eyelash with the Z8 in some instances (not always), but lets be honest, this is nitpicking here. No client is pixel peeping. They never have. The shooter may be pixel peeping but when zoomed out, you can't tell if the eye or eyelash is in focus. No AF is perfect. The R6 and R5 had issues with front focusing and losing subjects. My A7IV had trouble focusing in some instances. No point in nit picking, no system is perfect. I think at this point they're pretty equal and more than most people will ever use.

Nikon must have gotten wind of the R5 II into price, because they raised the price of the Z8 by about $1000 here in Canada last week.

What's the advantage of cross-type AF? Yes, it sucks that the R5 II doesn't have it, but it's also a higher-resolution sensor than the R1. Maybe in 2029 if we're going with 5-year cycles. Sony is rumored to be releasing an A1 II soon.

The ability to quickly lock on a subject that's outside of your current focal plane. Or to shoot through objects such as soccer nets and lock onto the subject face vs locking onto the net as was shown in the release this morning.

I'm not sure where people are getting this 5 yr cycle from. The current cycle is 4yrs. I haven't even owned my R5 4 years yet and I was one of the lucky ones that got in on the first batch.

Canon's rumored to be releasing the R1II and R5III in a couple years. Maybe by that time the competition will catch up with these new rigs.

Wins:

- stacked sensor
- useable electronic shutter
- RAW pre-capture
- improved AF (to be confirmed?)
- on/off switch moved to right side of camera
- full-size HDMI port

Fails:

- no dual cards slots - still two mis-matched slots
- no tilting LCD - same old selfie screen
- requires new batteries
- no exposure zebras in stills mode (to be confirmed?)

Which other camera supports zebras for stills?

I'm sorry - forgot this one!

This is not an advantage to the R5 II. The Z8 has a significantly faster reading sensor than the R5 II, and so it doesn't need a mechanical shutter.

It's not about the readout speed actually. I shoot indoor performances with a bunch of large LED lights, and I used to switch my A1 to mechanical (also 12fps I believe) otherwise I was getting tons of horribly looking banding, which was a nightmare to get rid of in PS. The mechanical shutter always solved this for me.

Yeah, right, all this Canon's cr@p is not worth extra $300 /s

DPR also claims the R5 II supports 14-bit video, which would be a first, especially if it's 14-bit 8K/60p RAW video.

Superior in which way? Both shoot 8K/60 RAW, oversampled 4K, etc but the Z8 has ProRES which may appeal to some. I do like Canon's LOG better. Nikon needs an NLOG 2.

It looks like both raw and ProRes are 12bit on the Z8/9. The original R5 was also 12 bit I believe. 14 bit is basically a normal raw photo. If that's true - we're getting to the point when still grabs have the same quality as regular raw photos.

The Z8 can't shoot 8K in ProRes. Does it support Zebras?

Supposedly, C-LOG2 is very good and can capture a good deal of DR. The Z8 can only shoot at best 12-bit videos.

100%. I also wonder how the R5 II's slower sensor impact me as a travel and portrait shooter in practice. Probably not much? I welcome the AI-enhanced AF. I also love hearing about 14-bit video. I like that it's lighter than the Z8! As long as the DR is competitive with the Z8 at base ISO, then I'll be satisfied.

Also, it would be great if Canon release a weatherproof 24-240mm lens or an L-series travel zoom! Nikon just released a 28-400mm lens!

All Sony cameras for a good while now. Game changing feature. Every time I use a Nikon or Canon I miss it a lot.

Z8 is made in Thailand. Canon R5, R1 are made in Japan. Labor cost is always higher in Japan.
One reason my first dSLR was 20D and not Nikon D70 was because of that.

A good while as in since when? Does the A6700 or even the RX100 VII support zebras in stills?

Lighting rules are still the same regardless of the zebra feature. I shoot in brightly backlit, and underexposed shadows during horse races as the day comes to an end. For me, non-video zebras aren't helpful, I know I will need to expose for shadows regardless of the blown out backgrounds for proper exposure.

They did? Shows $5399 at CC. Wasn't that always the price? Was it way lower recently?

I'm not sure when they started. I had it in my 2017 A9 and ever since in every Sony I've owned like A9II, A7RIV, A7RV, A1, A9III.

I did a quick google back to the original A7/A7R and they had it so I think it has been there since the beginning of FF E-mount.
I also did a quick search of the A6700 help guide and it has them also.
And yes the RX100VII has it.
I'm pretty sure every Sony MILC has had it.

I shoot video and that would be a nice feature.
