Godox v860iii. I like it quite a bit. It's fast, battery life is good (I do carry a spare battery for it on occasion), has a built in receiver/trigger if you decide to get a transmitter for any off-camera stuff. It has a modeling light, which is extremely helpful for macro. If you go another direction look for something that also has this.

Good tip about the modeling light. That sounds handy

As a general rule with Canon products, the quicker orders are fulfilled and demand is satisfied the sooner products appear in the online Refurbished store. Hopefully six months from now (or even earlier).

Has anyone tried to use the LP-E6P battery in the original R5? I do plan on getting a R5 II within the next year, but just not right now. What do need now are some new batteries and I don't want to restock on the older batteries.

There will come a FW update for the R5 that make it possible to use with P batteries.

I have read that, but that info isn't stated anywhere on the Canon website that I can find. What happens if you put a "P" battery in the R5 as is right now? Is there no power supplied at all? Does the camera blow up?

I'd stock up on the new batteries if the R5II is in your future vs the older batteries since the price is the same.

I just popped the new battery into my R5 and it worked and it displayed the new battery.

I may be wrong, but I bet Canon is flooding the US market with the R5II. The exchange rate is very good for them selling here and getting dollars and exchanging for the yen. Won't be long before e-bay will be cutting the price big time. Wait 6 months.

It probably means no discounts before Christmas.

With the news that the e-shutter only has a minor DR penalty compared to using the EFCS, will any landscape and travel photographers here have any reservations exclusively using the e-shutter?

OMG. What did I do? Played around with my R5M2 and realized how far technology has moved in the 12 years since I purchased the 5DM3. I am leagues and leagues behind. Have to rethink my whole button and setup customization and feels like I am almost relearning photography. Three dials on the camera? One each for AV/TV/ISO and then one more on the RF adapter.

I set up Eye Control AF and it's just amazing. The touchscreen in the back. Sorry if I am gushing, but there are so many changes for me to get over.

One question. How does one set up manual focus assist to work with pure manual lenses? I tried it with my Vivitar Series 1 90mm macro lens (Camera->RF-EF Control Ring Adapter->M42-EF adapter-> Lens) and it was not working. Worked well with my EF 24-70 when switched over to MF on the lens.

I got to play with my new R52 this evening. I went to a local park and looked for a few birds to photograph and was pleasantly surprised at how much better it was at finding birds in relatively busy backgrounds as compared to the R5 and R3. Generally I feel the R3 is a bit more responsive and the R3 drives the lens’ AF faster (shot with RF 600 f/4 tonight) than the R52.

One thing that was interesting was the difference in the viewfinder feed when shooting with recapture on vs off. When on and the shutter is half-depressed, you get the exact same feed that you would get if you were taking photos at that time. Essentially it looks like it slows down from a 120Hz EVF to a 30Hz EVF (same as the frame rate) while recapture is going.

Overall it really seemed like a significant upgrade for bird photography.

I shot a few quick photos of my 4 year old with the RF 85/1.2. He decided he was going to spin in circles for some reason and the speed with which the camera picked up his face and eye was notably better than I think I would have gotten with theR5 and the R3. I had him framed roughly from the chest to just about the top of his head.

One other interesting thing was how much brighter the EVF is than the R5 EVF. I usually shot the EVF at max brightness with the R5. It was so bright when shooting inside that I turned it to the AUTO feature.

As primarily a bird photographer, I’m quite pleased with the upgrade and can’t wait to try it out on birds in flight in the coming days and weeks.

Did you find the 85mm f1.2 slow for tracking moving subjects on the R5 compared to the R5II? Is the tracking ability significantly better with "slow" (focusing) lenses like the 85mm f1.2? I don't find the 85mm THAT slow but noticeably slower than my RF 70-200mm f2.8. I also find the 28-70mm f2 struggles to track fast action on the R5.

I popped it in my R5 and it worked fine. Stock up on the new LP-E6Ps.

On the other hand, when I put in the older LP-E6NH I have been using with R5 into R5II, you will be greeted with a message noting some of the functions will be restricted (video recording, network functions, and use of some accessories). I have read about battery compatibility prior to purchase so not all that surprised to see that message.
When I look up battery info via menu when using LP-E6NH in R5II, the camera will not show remaining battery % and it will show much lower remaining capacity. It does read how many shutter actuations have been made with the battery and recharge performance (this particular one I popped in has two green squares). At approximately 60% charge, R5II started indicating low battery.

While on topic regarding compatible accessories from R5, L bracket for R5 from RRS fits on R5II. Due to slight change in the thickness of the camera body as a result of air duct, the vertical portion of L bracket may hinder tethering in certain situations, especially with the full size HDMI port on R5II. Other than that, I don't see any glaring issues - at this moment I don't see myself investing another $200 for the dedicated L bracket for R5II from RRS (besides, I have an impression that RRS is putting more effort into guns and hunting accessories and their recent camera plates and L brackets, while still solid, are not as well thought-out as they used to be).
Those who are looking for screen protectors can order the ones sold for R5. LCD screen size is identical (contrary to specs noted on Canon USA site) - in fact, entire flip out LCD assembly is identical. The top LCD is the same size as well.
Hope this helps.

Tough to say. I think the RF version is so much better than the EF 85/1.2 I owned previously (version 1) that I never really thought of the RF85/1.2 as slow focusing on the R5 or R3. What I noticed was the R5ii found and tracked my son’s eye a lot faster than the R5. I hadn’t really adjusted anything when he walked into the room and the camera was at 1.2 and 1/320. There was motion blur, but it found the plane of focus very quickly. It just did it. I think I had it on while done eye AF at that point.

Did you get a chance to do any panning BIF? If yes, can you describe the shooting experience? Was it blackout free? Any jitter before/after burst compared to the R5? Is it seamless and easy to track your subject while firing?

That makes sense because it is taking photos at that time and saving them in a continuous loop of 15 shots max.
As we've come to discover, no matter what FPS you set the camera at the pre-capture is always shooting at 30FPS and always doing 0.5s or 15 shots maximum saved in memory for the pre-capture.
