I have not been out with the 28-45 for the last month because fall colors have been average in my area of NC and I have been lazy. So I will post a few more from my Chicago trip.

I received my new sample yesterday and it looks very good. At 28mm and 35mm the lens is slightly sharper, there is no decentering like on the first sample (the upper center was sharper than the middle center) and I see a pretty nice improvement at 45mm.
I was not really convainced by Sigma DG DN lenses before, I had the 24-70mm, the 35mm F2 and I tried the 85mm f1.4. I found the 24-70mm sterile, sharpness was ok with good contrast but I didn't like the output, especially compared to my other 24-70mm lenses. Same for the 35mm F2. The 85mm was sharper than my 85mm GM, however I just prefer the rendering of the GM.
But honestly, this 28-45mm is a different beast, the contrast and colors remind me some of my Zeiss lenses, like the 135mm Batis f2.8, the contrast is really high and colors just pop, a real difference with the previous DG DN. The sharpness is more or less the same than a good sample of a 35mm/50mm GM and the lens is optically (and maybe not only optically) better than every 24-70mm zoom I had including the 24-70mm DG DN (and by a large margin), but also the Leica 24-90mm SL and Lumix 24-70mm S Pro.
Outside of the very good colors and contrast, the rendering is great too, the DOF at the point of focus is very thin wide open and sometimes it looks like this 28-45mm has a shallower depth than a f1.8 lens.
I tested the lens mostly wide open but I need to use it more between f2/f4 to see how it compares to the 24-70mm/50mm S Pro and 24-90mm SL, to my eyes these 3 L-mount lenses show a great illusion of depth and volume.
Really I think the lens is a real bargain for 1400$/1499€, it is lighter than I thought and even if the focal range might not look impressive, the rendering is top notch and most of my 28mm, 35mm, 40mm and 50mm lenses will be for sale very soon.

You have just described very well what can be referred to as a well-balanced lens. A harmony of sufficient sharpness and the aesthetic properties that are thankfully now becoming more of interest to lens designers.

Better than the Leica 24-90mm SL is quite an endorsement. That Leica lens has been a class leader since it was first introduced, delivering thousands and thousands of wonderful pictures.

The Leica was really one of the best around, not exactly cheap and lightweight but it had the juice for sure

I really hope Sigma make a 50-100 f2 version of this lens with the same amazing sharpness. That would be an instant buy for me. Would be great portrait and landscape lens.

Confirming my early comment that low light, long end focus softness was user error.
Debating taking this + Samyang 85 1.4 II as my only lenses to Venice and environs.

Finally decided to walk around the River Arts District (located next to the French Broad River) in Asheville and take photos. Light was harsh, but it was the only chance I had to get there before the holidays. There has been much progress cleaning up the mess, but much work remains, Most of my shots were at ~28, a few ~40. Made me almost rethink selling the Q2 Reporter, but I did not like the crop frame lines versus a zoomed view in the EVF. The 28-45 solves this albeit in a bigger form factor.

We went down to GSMNP back in 2013 for vacation and stayed not too far from Ashville. We did get to the Biltmore and then ate at 12 Bones, which I think is in the River Arts District. I've seen some crazy pictures from the hurricane. Seeing your pictures, I assume it's going to take a while to recover.
A few years later we went back down to GSMNP and stayed near Gatlinburg, later that year was when the big fire went through. Life is fleeting, it's tough to see all the curve balls that come.

Tim, thanks for your comment. It's tough seeing what's happened. Many of our favorite breweries opened in the last two weeks so we have been busy making use of what they offer : ). Unfortunately, although everyone is grateful people are stopping in, the wear and tear of the last few months is evident on their faces.
My wife and I were at New Belgium this afternoon and we were shocked by how many trees had been scraped away for the banks of the French Broad. I'll be long gone before it looks like it did.
Paper recycling plant: Family owned since 1941. Unclear if they will recover from this.

I often leave it on all day, beautiful images indoors and out. It has become one of my favorite lenses.
