Always the glutton for punishment, as I'm not a good lens tester. But I doubt you'll find anyone else comparing these lenses, so beggars can't be choosers. Please look at the full size images, which are linked below the images you see. These were processed in Lightroom, default sharpening. Lens corrections were on, using the profiles in Lightroom. Tweaked vignetting correction in some of the shots just to give a more similar feel to the shots.

All shots were taken with the camera mounted on my RRS TVC-22i tripod with an Arca-Swiss P1+ ballhead/Acratech Lever Clamp. I manually focused on the same spot, obviously some level of human error can come into play.

Had to stop the zoom down a tad to match the primes in these next two comparisons.

Tim, hopefully you won't get too much of the usual lens testing grief. I appreciate these sorts of tests, even if I wasn't thinking about this Sigma zoom.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me enough to get better at it or stop posting them. So I guess it doesn't bother me too much.

I doubt there will be many who are interested in the zoom.

Thanks Steve

What are your thoughts on the lens vs the primes?? Do you like the IQ on one better than the other, do you think this will impact what you bring on a shoot?

I'm still absorbing some of the photos I took today. I briefly shot with the zoom early one morning this week, and then again today. I tend to gravitate towards primes. But I use the 14-24 along with my primes quite a bit.

It's pretty darn good for a zoom shot wide open. I guess I really don't know what impact it will have. I will say that when shooting waterfalls in iffy weather, I might bring the zoom since it's sealed, where the CVs aren't. I consider my 14-24 to be prime quality at all focal lengths, and from what I see from the 28-45, I think it is as well.

I haven't tried either Sony or Sigmas 24-70 I/II's, but I suspect this zoom will be better....albeit at the cost of size and weight (and reduced focal range.). I do have the Tamron 28-75 II, but I think it's slightly decentered at 28mm...which bothers me. I should probably send it in to see what they can do.

Very nice, Tim. We don't get enough of these great comparisons with identical scenes enough here.

That 28-45/1.8 is extremely sharp! Looks really good compared to all the other top-shelf lenses you compared it against. How do you see yourself using it going forward? Waterfalls and landscapes? People? Seems like it could do anything pretty well.

I will say that from a LoCA/LaCA perspective, it seems very clean. It doesn't seem out of place with the CV APOs.

Wow that Sigma is sharp!! From the small section in focus it gives prime like sharpness. I also like the reduced cat's eye on the edges (but I'm sure the tradeoff for that was size). It looks like it is in a different league compared to the Sigma and Tamron normal zooms.

I tend to go back to many places over and over again, different times of the year, etc. But if I'm exploring a new place, zooms sometimes make more sense as I don't know what to expect. So I could see me taking this.

Also if I'm going somewhere where it is difficult to take the time with my MF primes, zooms also have an advantage. This is so flexible...I could use it indoors, outdoors....pretty nifty.

I could see me using it for waterfalls, as it's sealed.

the 14-24 was the first zoom < 100mm that actually kept primes out of my bag. I can kind of see this lens coming along instead of my primes.

I have quite a bit of lenses, I try to keep a good bit of them in some rotation.

I suspect that to be the case. It also feels weird to have to stop it down when comparing it to the CVs. Granted it's just f/1.8 to f/2, but it feels a little wild having to do that. Normally it's the other way around.

The focus ring is well dampened compared to the 14-24. It has pretty decent MF feel.

Speaking of grief, Sigma was probably expecting some with such a short zoom range.
No surprise to me it has great optical quality, they knew it would have to.
Heavy, limited range, but fast and beautiful. (results, not it's looks).

Thanks for posting.

Yes. And if you think of all the aspects of lenses...prime/zoom, fast/slow, small/large, optically corrected/digitally corrected...CA (lo and la), flare, coma, sunstars, breathing.....I'm sure I'm missing a bunch.....you can't optimize for all of them.

Any lens a company designs and sells is an attempt to find a set of compromises that allow some strengths to show through.....with no guarantee those choices will resonate with customers.

Last one, at least for tonight. Let me know if anyone wants to see anything specifically, obviously I didn't shoot only wide open shots.

28/2.8
