Thanks, that museum is just a fabulous place. I mean you could easily spend a day there, and we only had 2 hours before it closed, and I was there with my family. It's like a museum inside a museum.

I don't shoot indoors as much as outdoors, and the lighting seemed like it was going to be a challenge. I was happy to see that I really couldn't find any AF misses.

A couple of stragglers. This gas powered cement mixer was used to build the Mercer Museum.

The ceiling of the main portion of the museum was just covered with chairs, bassinets, etc. Slightly disturbing to me, although I can't explain why.

Lenstip's Polish sister site has its review up. Usually their English translation on Lenstip appears in a few days, but the charts & images are all the same between the two.

https://www.optyczne.pl/597.1-Test_obiektywu-Sigma_A_28-45_mm_f_1.8_DG_DN_Wst%C4%99p.html

The Google translation of their final summary:

Optyczne:
I won't hide from you that I like such tests the most. After over 20 years of testing optics, it's hard to surprise me with anything, so I'm all the more eager to take on an instrument with unique parameters. And if, on top of that, this instrument performs exemplary in tests, we're completely happy, because everyone is happy. And that's exactly the situation we're dealing with in the case of the new Sigma A 28-45 mm f/1.8 DG DN. Here we got a lens with parameters we've never seen before, which was also able to present resolutions close to record-breaking.

Of course, you can't expect miracles here. With these parameters, some compromises had to be made. One of them is, of course, weight and dimensions. At the same time, our test clearly showed why Sigma decided to end the range at 45 mm and not extend it to the classic value of 50 mm. In this case, we would have to accept either a significant deterioration in performance or an additional increase in weight and dimensions. Most of us would want neither one nor the other. Clear compromises are also visible in some optical categories, such as vignetting. The coma was not fully corrected, and the lateral chromatic aberration at the shortest focal length enters the medium levels. But these are basically the only shortcomings, because in all the rest of the test categories the Sigma did well or very well.

Keeping in mind what we have just written, the price set by Sigma, which is just under PLN 6,400, does not seem excessive. After all, by spending such an amount, we get an exceptionally bright, full-frame zoom lens that is able to generate images with record-breaking resolutions and, in addition, show off great autofocus work. Such a combination is honey to the hearts of most reporters or wedding photographers. I have no doubt that the Sigma A 28-45 mm f/1.8 DG DN will find a whole host of satisfied users among them.

Considering the fact that the tested lens presented a whole range of significant advantages and only one obvious disadvantage, we had no doubt that it deserved the distinction of "Optyczne.pl Editors' Choice". Congratulations!

I am one of those really satisfied users that they allude to.

Left is Voigtlander 35/2 APO and the right is the Sigma. This is zoomed to 300% on a retina display, so probably a little nit picky. The CV 35 is a great lens.

One of these lenses is an APO lens, the other isn't. (I guess there is always a little fudge in many APO designations.)

It's an impressive performance. Despite having 35GM and 50GM once I'll have to buy this lens.

Having read the Google translated review, their findings jive with my experience with the lens. Meaning I don't see anything glaring in that review that isn't borne out in my use of the lens. Granted I haven't tested ALL of what they tested, but of what I've either tested or have a good feel for....their review seems to jive.

Maybe it's me, but I find the weight of this lens low, and the price of this lens as well. You can complain it doesn't do 50mm, but 45mm is more than 40mm.

The 40mm Art weights more and having both 40 and 45mm is better.
The 28mm Art + EF-RF adapter or MC-11 is around the same as the zoom.
Combined it's more than double the trouble.

I've payed 800 euro for the 40mm Art and 750 euro for the 28mm Art = 1550 euro. This zoom is 50 euro less.

With this zoom it takes just one body to cover both focal lengths.
And if you bring two bodies anyway, one is freed up for an 85mm.

So I keep telling myself, 50mm & f/1.2 (GM) is better than 45mm & f/1.8, and f/2.2 up to 59mm (Tamron) is better than f/1.8 at max 45mm.....,

but boy, it's tempting....

It's a very tempting lens and for me on my way out of the business I just don't have a ton of use for it now but that's my choice. But if I was working more in photography this maybe a no brainer. I like the look of the images.

They are good people, Lenstip, enthusiastic and fair-minded. On the 35 APO / Sigma crops, corner branch crops always strike me as residual lateral CA, which the 'APO makers' (Cosina and Leica) tend to leave for post cleanups either in profiles or actions.

It's the nasty stuff you see next to the thin planes of focus anywhere in the frame that get their greatest attention. Phillip Reeve was pretty adept at seeking out scenarios to get them to reveal minute flaws in this respect.

It's very good for the enthusiast end of the industry to see the trajectory being followed by Sigma, putting this level of performance in the hands of people for not so much of a outlay. They are doing the hard yards here. Will we see them do a halfway range, with their small slow primes at one end and these great but heavy/large lenses at the other?

I'd like to think there is enough maturity around for buyers to consider lenses with a little less speed, a fair loss of weight and size (2/3rds of this one, say) and some more range, maybe 30-70mm at f2.4 and 650 grams.

Even 28-65mm, as the kind of users they are attracting know about cropping the long end using high resolution bodies. That way they can claim to cover off 28-35-50-70 to bring genuine portrait focal lengths and focus isolation into play. So almost double the regular focal lengths, from 28-35-40'ish.

Many were very happy with 35-70s in days gone by. I think you have to have 70mm within reach in a non-pro enthusiast lens, so move up the short end in the knowledge that most people will want other wide(r) solutions in any case. A compressed range obviously gives them scope for a faster max aperture. This present one is a showcase lens for many people, a shining light to illuminate Sigma's future plans.

Their 28-70 2.8 DG DN Contemporary is only 470g. Is there really a market for an f/2.5 between the 2.8 and the 1.8?

Was there a market for a fast 28-45mm? They did it anyway, and will reap the rewards of critical acclaim at least, if not sales. It's an ART series with lavished attention in design and finish, where the 28-70mm is a DG DN Tamron competitor with attendant shortcuts built in.

https://dustinabbott.net/2021/02/sigma-28-70mm-f2-8-dg-dn-review/

My reasoning, if you can call it that, is that the three variables are: aperture, range and weight. So if (IF) they can replicate the image quality of this breakthrough lens, they have to vary the mix. I'm thinking aloud above.

I figure the main barrier to greater acceptance is the size and weight, nothing new there. If they could have done a wider range - which would gain them more sales interest - at even the current weight, they would have done so. But it would have become a Canon-esque 1500 gram item, for elite event pros.

Aperture does seem to be sensitive, even critical, doesn't it? And that is how they are promoting this one, and you see people's bokeh images here. But at 28-45mm there is real resistance too. So if they relax the aperture a little and keep the image quality over a more central range, that's my thinking for more acceptance.

Weight is a understated reason to nix a lens, but it's very real. If you have two lenses, one at 950g and the other at 650g, it's an easy choice. I want to see them go from a quality first angle of attack, trading off the variables to get the best result. This one is just too large/heavy for travel for one thing, and its range means you would be often swapping out other lenses. Zooms are very hard, and they are pioneering novel focal length ranges to see what happens. What would you want if you were in this market sector?

Looking at the lens on paper I was thinking it's not for me. After looking at the images, I'm not so sure. The IQ is very interesting and the weight can have an exception made for a special lens. I think for me the greatest issue is still the range. It makes we wonder what the rumored 24-70/2 GM will be like.

Range, yes, it defines each lens. You can forgive a lot when the image quality is so much in evidence.

Sony will always stay close to what its mainstream competitors do, I believe. Canon's 28-70/2 is a brutish 1500 gram, $2900, 95mm filter lens - very narrow purpose, I would think. And outside the cloistered world of Canon event pros, it's curiously unimpressive as seen from 2024, despite the rave reviews from the faithful.

Six years old it is, and we appear to have moved on even faster, the impartial among us, at least. Sigma are therefore in the box seat to break new ground, and they have momentum and drive, and runs on the board.

I think this 28-45 is a perfect lens considering today's standards. The size is manageable on latest A7 series, resolution is enough for highest MP cameras (60MP), barely see any CA, visible flaws (distorsion, vignetting) are easy to correct, premium build quality (internal zoom), fast AF, and the most important is the range they squeeze into this lens without image quality sacrafise. 28mm is the upper limit of wide angle so you have wide angle, also 45mm provide enough compression for portraits, 68mm in crop mode is the upper body portrait zone.
I see many complaints about the range, but keep in mind how challenging make this zoom lens f1.8 with the best primes image quality. It's not like having 2 or 3 f1.8 primes as many reviews are suggesting, because there aren't such high IQ f1.8 primes. You have to reach premium primes, 35GM is barely better however has f1.4, and together with 50GM they are lot more expensive, even then you miss the 28mm wide end. For my needs I prefer to have 28mm wide end compared 35mm, over 70mm instead of 45mm. For more range with this optical standard means a monster lens (over 1,5-2kg).

For f/2.4 or whatever me it wouldn't be distinctive enough from f/2.8 zooms, and not close enough to the primes. The latter is the most important for me.
I don't consider this zoom as the one and only zoom in the bag. It's even not mainly operating in the ball park of zooms.

I'm thinking more of a bag filled with a 24-104mm f/4.0 or 20-70mm f/4.0 or 28-200mm as the main zoom, and some added primes for low light, shallow DOF and better IQ, say a 28mm a 50mm and an 85mm f/1.4.
In that context this 28-45mm doesn't replace any zooms, but it does replace two primes, with in between focal lengths and no lens changes as a bonus. In that context the weight isn't a huge problem as it's not on the camera the whole day.
Personally I don't like 35mm in a prime as it's too compromised, nor here or there. I like 28mm, but it takes lens changes as I can't do everything with it. I like 50mm the best, but sometimes I do want to go wider (I can force my self to accept not having wider, but it hurts sometimes). If going without zooms I would change the most between a 50mm and 28mm prime. This 28-45mm f/1.8 solves this.

f/2.4 brings a lens closer to zooms for range, and some or many will like that, but it sacrifices the prime replacing capability.

I'm often leaving the house with "redundant" lenses: a heavy version and a light weight version. RF 28mm f/2.8 stm pancake + Sigma 28mm f/1.4 Art for instance. Or the FE 28-60mm next to another zoom. It allows me to get rid of the weight on the camera when I don't need the bright aperture.
It never happens with the EF 40mm f/2.8 pancake + 40mm Art, but it's possible. (the 40mm pancake isn't that great and I happen to prefer a compact zoom) The 85mm DN isn't that heavy the Samyang 75mm f1.8 is needed next to it in my bag, but it could be another example as well. (I'm only bringing the Samyang when leaving the Sigma at home.)

And this is how I think of the 28-45mm as well, I would use it next to another zoom weighting less and/or giving more reach.

There's a third perspective: the bag with primes only: 28+50+85mm for instance. I think this lens saves you the majority of lens changes when replacing the 28+50mm, however, in this context the weight is limiting, as an f/2.0 28mm or an f/2.0 50mm can weight considerably less than this 28-45mm zoom. 85mm is usually the least on your camera, so the 28-45mm will increase the weight in your hands a considerably amount of the time you're using and carrying the camera.

I generally want a fast 28mm or 35mm AF prime that I can use when I want to take portraits indoors from close quarters. For me that lens needs to be reasonably sharp from f/1.8, and for me it seems for this lens that will not be a problem. It needs to have a wide aperture, and for me f/1.8 is wide enough. I also want to have reasonably good bokeh, and for me I think this lens will be fine. It seems to have a bit of outlining but not too bad, and it has very little axial CA in the bokeh, and the vignette is low enough that it doesn't cause major issues either in cat's eye shaped bokeh balls that extend into the center of the frame or in creating too much swirl. I don't think the transition zones are too harsh either, but I would like to see more samples of the bokeh, before I am sure on this last point and more samples in general to get a better feel for the bokeh.

For me it seems that this lens can replace my wide AF prime and I think it is not just as good as, but for me a better option than any prime in this range. For example, at 35mm, where this lens appears to be at it very best I think it has better bokeh than the Voigtlander 35 f/2 APO and almost as good CA control and sharpness. It has at least as good and probably better sharpness than the Sigma 35 f/1.2, and bokeh that is better in some ways (less CA) and worse in others (not quite as smooth) and it is not larger. Compared to the 35 GM, it has almost as good of sharpness and to my eyes better bokeh with less CA, better transitions, and less problems from vignetting. I like it better than the Sigma 28 f/1.4 Art as well, with that lens' only advantage being the wider aperture (which is not unimportant) and being slightly smaller, which doesn't matter to me as they are close enough in size. For me it seems this lens will be better than any 35mm or 28mm for my purposes. That it covers both of those focal lengths is a nice bonus and that it covers 45mm as well is another bonus meaning I don't need to crop when I want a more normal perspective with this lens. All in all, it is a really strong offering and Sigma has really showed their chops in producing it.

It would be the same as every Sony camera when set to EFCS. On the a7R V you either need to go full mechanical or electronic shutter. It's all a function of the amount of ambient light.

For outdoor non-action I shoot electronic shutter. When there is movement, I either go EFCS as long as I can keep the shutter speed below 1/1000th...otherwise I switch to full mechanical.

I forget....does the a7C II and a7C R have full mechanical, EFCS, and electronic shutter.....or just EFCS and electronic shutter?

If it doesn't have full mechanical.....the issue will be when needing a high shutter speed to capture action and you want a shutter speed over 1/1000th (or you want a wide aperture to blur out the background more.)

Otherwise you should be able to live within the EFCS/electronic shutter that the camera implements.

You just need to remember to switch between the two. Why Sony hasn't implemented an "auto" feature baffles me. It wouldn't be hard to implement.

What samples would you like to see? Not making any promises, but if the opportunity presents, I can provide more. Just want an idea of what you'd like to see.

Logically I would compare it with the Sigma 28/1.4, CV 35 APO, and CV 50 APO, like I did in the first few posts in this thread. I have more apertures for those test shots, but didn't post them. I assume it's not just different apertures you want to see, but also different backgrounds or distance to subject?

I could also compare it to the Sigma i45 (whether or not that makes sense...but bokeh is one of its strong suits.)
