That’s just blurring the lines between the A1 / A9 lines and the A7r line. If one needs to reduce the rolling shutter effects, Sony already has 2 options…why do we need three?
The obvious reasons...the current options are aimed at different market segments and they cost a lot more.

Not to mention heat and data bottlenecks. The CFE A's are last gasping with 120fps at 24mp. They will probably explode with 50mp+ at that speed. berimbolo wrote:
I don't think its likely that Sony solves the engineering tasks required to have a useable 50mp global shutter. I think it is next to impossible for them to do so while dealing with the DR limitations.

Sony just need to add all the features XR processor is capable of to A1 via firmware update, and drop price by $2k... Maybe they would actually do it after seeing how much Z8 is eating their cake. Bring A1 price down alone isn't gonna cut it.

Historically Sony has kept around old models for a long time as the "cheap" option for people. Not sure that will continue to work now that there is more significant competition in the MILC space from Nikon and soon Canon.
A $4K A1 might be enough though, as it does beat out a Z8 or Z9 on a ton of specs and at their best those cameras only match the A1, even with it being 3.5 years old now.
It will be interesting to see if Sony opens a new segment or just stays the course. There's some advantages in lower manufacturing costs the way they do it now.

I think we will get the A1 at a reduced price and a new A1II with all the latest features but no global shutter at ~$6500-$6900. That means the latest rear LCD, the AI assisted AF system, and other things but almost the identical sensor as the A1 since they typically use the same sensor for two generations of a body. Not sure what other features they will add except bumping up the frame rate some if they can. Thev still have have one of the fastest 14-bit RAW frame rates out there even without the global shutter.
One other note, if they remove the mechanical shutter like Nikon has on the Z9/Z8 that is a price reduction I think to the cost of the body.
I find Nikon use of a partially stacked sensor as a potential technical addition to the A7V

If I had to bet on it - this is what I'd expect too. It had better include precapture otherwise I'll probably pass.

Unless Sony starts losing sales, it's not gonna happen, as the forced marked segmentation works for Sony.
The new Nikon is really something, would be close to perfect (for its segment) if it was 2k $ and had decent battery life .

I'm curious to see what the next 2 years hold. Canon have stalled in sensor development, Nikon has been struggling, and Sony has not been innovating recently as much because of lackluster competition. But Canon has the R1 and R5II that may showcase great sensor advancements. Canon's DGO sensor tech is awesome in my opinion. If they can implement that in a full frame stills camera, Sony would be scrambling. Nikon bought RED, whose 8k global shutter sensor has more dynamic range than any other sensor used in cinema cameras, other than the Arri Alexa. So Nikon now has the tools to not only get away from needing Sony sensors to some degree, but potentially getting sensors that are superior in at least some regard.

50/50 shot A7 V and A7S IV will get a partially stacked sensor like the Z6 III if either gets a new sensor. It's Sony tech, after all. More of an inevitability of Sony using it than anything. I'd say almost 100% chance A7R VI will get one. The line desperately needs the boost in readout speed for silent shutter use. Guessing the next big GFX will also get this tech.

The realization this week that partially stacked sensors are a thing might make for some interesting camera developments in the next few years. One thing I am very curious about is will partially stacked sensors have the dynamic range draw back of stacked sensors.
While I agree stacked sensors are not a necessity for every type of photography, and may even have some draw backs such as lower dynamic range, I do find they make mirrorless cameras shine. Abilities stacked sensors offer such as faster AF, less motion artifacts in video, better EVF experience, and no need for a shutter make the overall experience of using the camera much better.
My guess is over the next decade we will see most high end cameras go towards stacked sensors, with global sensors becoming more common. Just like it took time for most camera sensors to become BSI and dual gain.

We all said the A1 stacked sensor would be all we ever needed! Don't worry the A1mkii will be eclipsed by the A1 mkiii Make no mistake it will happen, no question. At some point you have to determine what you need vs. Want or you'll go Broke

All I'm holding out for is a A1MkII with a super high speed stacked sensor and cutting edge focus system that will eclipse even what's out there today including the proposed Quad Pixel R1 of Canon. A 50mp stacked BSI sensor is all I'd ever need. If they did a A7RV with a stacked sensor that would rip up the competition for sure. Hard to imagine they will but we can hope.

You definitely need a shutter unless you're only shooting under sunlight. Still rolling shutter banding out there on shutterless stacked cameras from lights, electronic signs, and flash. And partially stacked sensors are (apparently) way slower than even the first generation of stacked sensors.

Exactly. I don't understand this need to "eclipse" the competition. Surely today's A1 is more camera than 99% of the members here really need.

While pre-capture is a feature I would really like to have, and a new feature that might get me to upgrade for I’ve shot for over 50+ years without so it’s not a deal breaker for me. Currently own two A1’s with grips and might consider trading in both for a new and updated A1 Mark 2 if it had all the new features especially since I’m slowing down a bit and not sure I need two of theses beasts as much as I used to with after also buying into the new compact C bodies I use for travel.
