p.7 #1 · Speculation on stacked BSI sensor at $4K - based on competition from Nikon/Canon

I’ve been saying for a long time that Sony should make an “A8” line which would be now their answer to the Z8 and R5MKII

45mp stacked sensor
5m dot EVF
20fps
A9III style body and screen
4k video

A1 sales would drop by over 75%.

Even if Sony does not release such a camera, a1 sales will still drop because Canon and Nikon has released r5ii and z8 and will continue to release more bodies.

Cost of switching systems exceeds the cost of whatever a new A1ii will cost, especially if one is meaningfully invested in E-mount.

the z8 with megadap adapter makes my sony lens feel like native lens on my Z8, at least for the fast few days of testing AF and stuff. I think Nikon will put the Z8 sensor into a Z7 like body sooner or later.

For me, relying on adapted glass is not a reasonable path forward. Your use cases may differ.

Z8 is definitely an attractive camera at its current price and should be seriously considered by someone starting from scratch. That's what Nikon is paying for trying to recover some of the market share it lost during the F to Z transition.

I have thought about acquiring it multiple times, but here is what held me back personally.

(1) Not all lens adapt well regarding image quality due to sensor glass thickness difference. I read 20G adapts poorly in particular. So maybe the small wide angle lens don't work as well.

(2) What if the adapter company goes out of business and the adapter stops working. I will have to acquire native Z lens then.

(3) While I'm fine with Nikon's sizes, every time I pack for travel, I appreciate more and more the compactness of Sony cameras and lens.

(4) Precapture in jpg is still useless for me.

So for me, while it will be fun to have it as a backup/change of pace camera, I feel I won't be fully satisfied with it. So I figure I can just keep the money and use it towards the next "complete" camera that I want to upgrade to.

1. My intention is to keep my Sony bodies alongside the z8. I always carry multiple bodies.
2. There are more than one company making etz adapters… I think there will be more copycats as the product work really well now
3. I will know in sep when I pack the z8 for a vacation
4. I don’t use pre capture.

I buy a lot of cameras…. I did not feel that happy when I got the a7r5 for around the same amount of money as the z8 one year back. The a7r5 was similar to my a7m4 with a few upgrades like the displays and af tracking.

If someone wants a stacked sensor camera with excellent video then Sony is looking extremely expensive at the moment body wise. It was one thing to not directly answer the Z8 which is/was a huge mistake but it would be something else entirely to not answer both the Z8 and R5 MK II. The A7V probably won’t get a stacked sensor so either the A7RVI gets a 60mp stacked sensor or Sony makes a new line of body to directly compete with the Canon and Nikon offerings. Or the A1 gets a HUGE price reduction brand new.

As I said elsewhere, it is usually more expensive to switch systems than whatever the new A1 will cost. If you have 1-2 bodies, a few GM lenses (especially a 600/400GM), it will cost a crapload to switch systems. Also, just to be clear, I think that any body without 2 CFExpress Type * cards is unsuitable.

"then Sony is looking extremely expensive at the moment body wise"

A1 33% more than Z8, 18% more than R5II.
I wouldn't call 18% more than R5II extremely expensive.

? Street price? The z8 is around 3.5 to 3.8k usd… how much is the a1 street price new? In my place a1 is like close to 70% more expensive than z8 new.

The a1 price is really good in Australia. Which is weird because usually Singapore is cheaper for camera.

I've read that to make full use of the R5II you have to buy the newer batteries which I've read can add almost an additional $500.

Not sure which batteries it comes with, old type or newer ones. With the A1, it's fully functional as bought.
