You need to understand the audience here. It's easy to get 'perfect' lenses like the Otus/Milvus also from Canon, Nikon and Sony in those focal lengths. They might even be technically better than the Zeiss lenses.
The interest in this 50 Lux "re-issue" if it can be called that, is precisely because of the hope/desire that it will not be a perfect, modern lens. There is actually some disappointment that it's not very similar to the imperfections of the Lux v2 and appears to be closer to the 'modern' Lux ASPH.
And $3800 is actually surprisingly low for a new Leica M lens...
Interestingly, the new Otus ML lenses apparently trade some of the perfection of the original versions for slightly more 'character.' Even Zeiss is apparently catering to this now.
Yes, exactly, I am in the camp that really wants this to be the exact replica of the Lux V2 (which I had before), but from all the samples I had seen, it's not the case, and it's much closer to the ASPH which I already have.
It's a sure buy for me if it was exact replica of V2 but with 0.7m MFD.
Alas. I am looking forward more for the LLL Z21 now.
Was looking at the VM heliar classic too, but I am afraid that one is on the other extreme of the "character lens"

I don't love dog test pictures but first few images taken of my Ridgeback. It feels like my Noctilux 1.2 in a more mangeable size so far-
Looking forward to a direct comparison with the 50 1.4 LUX CF -
My 50 needs to go into Leica for service with a stiff. aperture ring but not for a few months still-
Background bokeh looks very very smooth, I was expecting it to be more 'classic' similar to the V2. 🫤

Well, since you put it this way...I take back all my words....I never intended to ridicule someone's religion...all religions are good

Honestly, I'm disappointed. I was hoping Leica would reintroduce the 50mm f/1.4 Summilux V2, which renders the same as V3, instead of what they went with. It's still a cool lens, but its rendering has an entirely new look that is closer to the perfection and modern vibe (think Peter Karbe) of the ASPH version rather than the pre-ASPH. In fact, I would have preferred if Leica had revived the Summilux V1, which has a rendering more reminiscent of the Summarit.

me too. Back to searching for the pre-asph v3 . . .
I was searching for a used V2, but keep being reminded it has 1m MFD. V3 has 0.7m MFD, but it’s black with a more modern lens barrel design. Chrome with scalloped focus ring is just so nice a look.

The 1.0m vs 0.7m is a big difference, as well as 46mm thread vs 43mm, but more so for me I want a longer focus throw in fast glass. The V3 is 120 degrees and the V2 is 180 degrees. Also, neither YYE or DAG recommend the V3 due to the amount of element separation repair requests they see for the V3. If you are thinking between the V2/V3, keep those issues in mind
Nick YR wrote:
Ooh i didn’t know about that element separation thing on V3. Thanks for the heads up.
I have used both v2 and v3 but kept the v2. While 1.0 m MFD is a bit limiting but the longer focus thrown is really an advantage for me for v2 as mentioned by @rsolti13. There were some reportings of focus shift for v3 in close focus distance, potentially due to the changes of shorter focus thrown and 0.7 m MFD. For my own use, the focus is consistent and accurate for my v2 copy. Additionally, v2 is mechanically a better built lens.
I think any Summilux built after serial numbers 1,844,000 have the same design. I have absolutely enjoyed the rendering of the “3” on film and any 24mp digital. The focus throw is so smooth and the chromed brass is substantial. The “3” is a Mandler designed lens that I think pays homage to film more than adapting for digital.
ok I just pulled the trigger on a version 3 on eBay, it was the only version 3 I found where the pics of the body looked like it was new and the seller's description says:
-Lens:
Beautiful condition.
There is no fog.
There is no fungus.
There is no balsam separation.
There is no scratches.
There are a few tiny dusts.
No problem in the shooting.
It wasn't cheap - I tried to get the seller down on his $2,899 price and he wouldn't budge.
I have a 30 day period to inspect and return at seller's expense. What should I do in terms of inspection other than shining a bright light through both ends of the lens and inspecting with a magnifying glass?
Also I'll rotate the aperture dial and see what the aperture blades look like.
I'd greatly appreciate any tips on how to inspect and what to look for (especially evidence that the glue is disintegrating), thanks!

make sure to shine the light through both the front and rear element and inspect the edges of the glass. If you see lots of dots that aren't on the outside glass it could be either fungus or separation, depending on what exactly it looks like
I was also very close on pulling the trigger on a chrome early V2 with great condition and just CLA’ed. Priced ard 3k.
But the 1m MFD keeps pulling me back. Is 3k reasonable for a great condition v2?
