In the search for a long tele zoom: Sigma 100-400/5-6.3 + Metabones expander.
I think the optics of the expander are good enough, but the behaviour of the lens is a bit random.
The viewfinder image with IBIS/OIS looks still enough for really slow shutter speeds, but then the images come out unsharp anyway. It's like the camera switches stabilisation off when the image is taken instead of the other way around.
This example was shot on a tripod though. Which also showed a problem; AF is completely useless in low light and MF also almost impossible with such a slow lens. Probably partly because of the old 50 mpix sensor reading out veeeery slowly when light is scarce.
Edit: Actually, I just did some more controlled testing at home (still hand-held) and every image came out perfect. So I have no idea of why I got crap results a few times yesterday. This is a good reason to stay away from adapted lenses. Even if IQ is fine, now and then you get images totally out of focus or with unexplainable motion blur. Sigh.

Sigma struggle to sync with IBIS on native mounts, so I imagine adapted the problem could only get worse.
Yeah, but OTOH stabilisation works really good sometimes. It's the randomness that is annoying, and I don't understand how software can behave differently at different times. Makes no sense what so ever.
Sometimes when I fire up the camera, the lens cannot focus at anything. It just hunts and never even seem to get past where focus should be. Then I switch the camera off and then on again, and it works perfectly. WTF?
Edit: I think I want to try the EF 70-300 L, but it's a bit expensive if it doesn't work.

Having used the 100-400L II on the GFX, one of my conclusions after a few months on the system is that they really need a native 100-300 or 100-400 5.6. The 100-200's zoom range is too narrow IMO the jump from 45-100 to 250 and 500 is too big. They somehow made the 500 the size of a FF lens despite the larger coverage and the 100-400 is almost there, so I would love for them to figure this out. I sold my 70-300L before getting the system and am now wondering if I should have held on to it.

Some people dream about lenses. Other about cars.
Shot with a "dream lens" that I love and hate. It's only the focal length that is wrong.
What's wrong with the focal length? Too long get the 55, too short get the 110. What are those two lenses lacking which the 80 has? Genuinely curious.

I can answer: 55 is wider, 110 focuses faster!

Always a bit too long. I have the 55 and that focal length is perfect, but the 80 has nicer bokeh and general character.
I had the 110 and switched for the 80 since it was even more too long. And too heavy, and frankly quite boring.
Edit: Most likely gonna sell the 80. Or switch for something else.
Edit 2: Look at the two gentlemen behind the Porsche. They are in the transition zone, and even if LoCA is a bit too much, everything is soft and nice. Would have been a harsh mess with the 55. Or with the 110, for that matter.

Definitely too esoteric for me. I looked through a few photos I have on my phone and the closest I have to someone in the transition zone is this but they're probably a bit too far from the subject to show the 'mess' you get with the 55.
If I ever encounter such a problem I will remember this.

The 55 is still a fantastic lens; I simply like the character of the 80 a bit better. And yes, harsh transition zone is seldom a problem or even visible. But when it is, the 80 wins.
OTOH the 55 wins by miles and miles when it comes to LoCA.

Precisely why I went to the adapted 58 nikkor 1.4. About the same total size of the 55 with its adapter, it focuses faster and has great character. It doesn’t nail the corners as well, but covers full GF frame nicely without serious vignette with the hood left off.
