One thing I hadn't anticipated about having both the 16-25mm and the 24-50mm...they are the same size and shape. Which means I can't tell at a glance which lens is mounted; nor by touch when I grab it out of the bag. Have to look at the markings.

That truly seems like less than a first world problem. That same problem exists with the Sony small G trio.

If you can live with a one stop slower lens, why not just get the FE PZ 16-35mm f4 G lens for the same price?
If I were in the market for a zoom of this type, I'd take the 16-25 over the PZ. I use the PZ quite a bit at work for remote cameras, but I hate handholding it; not enough separation between the main control rings and the annoying placement of the zoom rocker don't make me want to add it to my personal kit. And I don't feel like I'd miss the underwhelming stills performance of the unique 10mm in the PZ's range. I find the 16-25 much more comfortable in use, with performance that's, at worst, equal to the PZ in the shared range at like apertures.

Now clicking on the Raw it opened in Camera Raw converter and you can certainly see the distortion
Sure, but the distortion at 16 is no greater than the distortion of the 24-50/2.8G @24, and lower than the distortion on the 20-70/4G @20. It's the default compromise for small and light these days. Even the GM zooms don't escape it entirely, so it's not like you can spend your way out it.
Having just ordered the overweight 12-24 GM for my A7R V, I have a stupid feeling that I may end up with a lightweight walk-around and travel setup this year, and this lens would be the only one I'd attach to a 7C II or FX3.

Just came out but I got the 24-50 and like it a lot so I have thoughts of grabbing this when im in New York next month and replace my Sigma 17mm
So now that you have the FE 24-50/2.8 G, like I did, and you are happy with it will you pull the trigger on the 16-25/2.8 G?
I probably will but I’ve been a little sidelined with some Surgery so it may wait a month or so till I order it. Currently it looks like it’s not in sellout mode just yet. In the interim I have the Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN and a Sony FE 12-24/4 that I took in trade here. Really haven’t used it much if at all but I guess I should give it a try or set it up for sale.
Follow up note: I didn’t realize the FE 12-24/4.0 G only weighed 565 gram. It’s only taller due to the built in hood. So really about the same size as the FE 35/1.4 GM with hood attached.
I am interested in how this lens compares to the Tamron 20-20/2.8 in actual usage (at the shared FL). I think I prefer a 20 + 24 + 28 + 35 than a 16 + 21 + 24 spots. I think about the FL’s offered in set prime FL’s and I shoot primes 90% of the time. I am specifically interested in those who have used both for video.

I like it very much. Overall sharpness, character of OOF areas, and handling are all great. In my view it shoots more like a prime than a zoom.
I wish Sony made a 16mm prime already. I am interested in this lens. Mostly as the next best thing to a 16mm prime since I already have other lenses covering 20mm+. I have contemplated dropping a wide zoom from my kit altogether, but I would miss having that 16mm at times.

Probably my lack of skill but below 20/21 mm I struggle with which focal then to shoot with. So to me the 16-35mm or 16-25 are more of a crutch to me. So I do now have three wide zooms, the 16-35/2.8 GMII, 12-24/4 G, and a Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. I plan to keep the GM II since I do use that with my A7RV. But everything else is up in the air but will mostly get used on the A7CR so size does matter for when I travel.
