p.1 #19 · How to set Canon R5 default storage to CF, not SD card? | |

I was aware of the issue of closing the door causing the card switch. And excited with the idea I could set card 2 to priority. It seems I can turn card 1 priority on and off, but not set to card 2. This is not mentioned in the advanced r5 manual at all. I found some dpr threads where it is said you can't do a card 2 as priority. Anyone figure out how to get card 2 set to priority ?

You just move down to highlight card 2 then hit the info button to put the check mark in the box.
Either card can be set to priority.

If I go to card 2 and press info it just toggles the priority for card 1 on and off. Maybe a firmware issue ? Yet to see anything on this from Canon in a clarification or in the actual advanced manual.

Yeah, I think you're right and you can only set card 1 as the priority card. Bummer.
For the record, I have an R6 and R6II and expect(ed) that all cameras with this priority card checkmark option would work the same way. I think they do, mostly, but because I only ever wanted to make slot 1 the priority card (with the checkmark option to set it as the priority card), I didn't notice that you couldn't assign the checkmark option to slot 2, which I think is a bit shortsighted by whoever created this option. Not a big deal for my R6/6II because both slots are SD.
I did notice something odd with my R6. If I have the priority card 1 checkmark set, sometimes if via the Q menu or diving into the regular menu, when I change the record/paly card to slot 2, the camera immediately switches back to slot 1. It'll keep doing this regardless of whether it's set to standard, auto rollover, record to multiple (where really only playback is relevant), etc. I finally figured out that I have to pop card 2 out and back in again and it will then let me switch to card 2 and stay there, even though I have slot 1 set as the priority card via the checkmark option.
I tried my R6II and it did not exhibit this odd behavior. If priority card checkmark is set for card 1 and I change record/play to slot 2, it stays at slot 2 unless card 2 is removed and the card door is closed, or card 1 is removed.

There is a menu function that allows you to assign a card slot as the priority one to be used whenever returning to a two-card scenario from single card.

I don't think so. I didn't remember my R5's behaving like this, so I just tried it again in an R5 with firmware 1.9.0. Camera's set to record to CFe card. Remove that card, close the door, and the camera starts recording to SD card.
Turn the camera off, replace the CFexpress card (so there are now 2 cards again), close the door and turn the camera on. The camera remains set to record on the. SD card until I change it back to CFexpress.
And yes, I'd set the appropriate control to use the CFe card as primary.
I checked a few options with my R6II, which might differ from the R5 (sounds like it from what you wrote above) and if you want to use slot 2 as your default card slot, do not checkmark the priority card slot 1 option because it will activate more situations when it will revert back to using slot 1.
If the checkmark is off, you can remove both cards, close the door, reinsert the cards and it will stay on slot 2. The only time it will switch to slot 1 is if you remove card 2, there is a card in slot 1 and you close the card door.
If the checkmark is on, and you have slot 2 set as record/pay, whenever you remove the card in slot 1 the camera will revert record/play functions to slot 1. It doesn't matter if the card in slot 2 wasn't removed or that the door wasn't closed. Based on what you wrote in the previous message, it sounds like the R6II's behavior is different than the R5's in this respect. I also checked this with my R6 and it behaves identically to the R6II.
