Hey Guys, what a thread this has been for gearheads! I went out this morning and bought myself a Micro Trekker 100 -- and its all your fault. But, Thanks, by the way! I think it should be a great bag.

Mines still a work in progress. I have all my extra dividers under the 580ex just to prop it up so I dont have to dig down to get it. When I need the space for another body the 580 will go straight up and down into a pocket. This pack weighs alot though already.

No, they discontinued it (Lowepro Trim Trekker) which is really too bad. It's a great bag/pack.

Jmardy, do they make that bag anymore?

Dr. D, what bag is that?

Do any of you guys have one of those hip-bags? I'm looking at some of the Lowe-pro ones (Orion or similar). I don't need to carry a body in it, but I'd like something easily accessible for lenses, flashes, etc when walking around

Not quite a backpack, more like a "haul it to the trunk and work out of the car" bag. Its a tamrac 614 (the older style before all the digital integrations)

http://www.brianthechemist.com/photos/albums/album23/100_0035_w.jpg

1: Elan IIe + grip
2: Ext. Tubes
3: 28/2.8
4: 100 macro w/ hood reversed
5: 550EX w/ stofen
6: 2x Tc
7: MR-14EX Ringflash
8: 50/1.8 Mk1
9: 70-200IS (hood fits in the back of the bag in a separate compartment)
10: Off camera cord
11: 10D+BgEd
12: canon charger, remote shutter release
13: bats, cf cards etc
14: Cokin filter system w/ rings and canon 500D
15: stepping rings, tools, straps

This is a great bag, I can put almost my entire kit in it and carry it with me when I go somewhere. I have a Velocity 9 that I carry on trips, and it can easily hold the 10d/grip, 550EX, 70-200, 100 macro and either the 28/2.8 or the 50/1.8 although all that weight on one shoulder is rough, (and sweaty, in New orleans last year I had a permanent sweat stripe where the strap went across my chest)

it only weighs 25 lbs actually. Definetly not for hiking. (although I have taken it on brief (1/2 mile) hikes with some of the extraneous gear removed) Needless to say I had to go the chiropractor afterwards!

I use the Crumpler Next Venue as my day to day bag. Its a medium/small sized shoulder bag that carries quite a bit of gear. Best thing is that it doesn't shout 'camera bag' in it's appearance.
This is quite a versatile bag so i'll include pics of a couple of my frequently used configurations.

(Left) Shot of bag closed
(right) Flap opened showing first topmost layer. I keep CF cards and AA batteries in here.
http://ph.smugmug.com/photos/19195658-O.jpg

Bottom zipper opened. Keep my filters, lens cloth, lenspen etc here. There's a zippered area on the flap itself where all my camera batteries are stored (around 3-4 NP-E3 for the 1D or around 5 BP-511 for the 20D)
http://ph.smugmug.com/photos/19195667-M.jpg

Config 1:
(Top) Top compartment with top layer opened (and velcroed to the flap)
clockwise from left: 1D/20D with 17-40 f4 and reversed hood, Tamron 28-75 with hood reversed, space for 50mm 1.8 (used for pic), Gmini220 digital wallet

(bottom) Bottom compartment with first layer opened showing the 'secret' compartment.
Contains 70-200/f4 with hood reversed, Sunpak 5000AF with omnibounce, blower. There's a soft divider between the flash and the lens.
http://ph.smugmug.com/photos/19195672-O.jpg

When I feel like bringing an extra body, I use
Config 2:
(top) clockwise from left: 1d with 17-40 f4 and reversed hood, Gimii 220 digital wallet on top of 17-40 lens, space for 20D body (used for pic), space for 50mm 1.8 (used for pic)

(bottom) bottom 'secret' compartment. Sunpak 500AF with omnibounce, 70-200 f4 with reversed hood behind flash, and a Tamron28-75 snugly on the side.

Tx Jeeper:

Either your mini is bigger than mine, or your 100-400, 135, and 24/70 are smaller than mine.

I am going to try and see if I can fit that many stuff into it. Thanks.

A bit late here..
This is my Osprey Eclipse 26+5. The pack features a 70oz camelback built in.
It Holds my PowerBook and most of the camera gear in my sig. It fits under the seat in front of me on the airlines. I typically hike in hot weather here in TX, and this pack has been bomber tough and comfortable. they make one size larger also.

Have you looked at the Kata rucksack Guy Aparently they can hold 1series bodies. I also looked at the new computrekker the other day and it happily sat my 1dmk2 in it with no bashing. It quotes it is about 6.5inches but with the extra flaps on the lid it fits a treat. I still plan on getting the lowepro photo trekker AWII though.

What lenses/camera will you be taking? 1dsmk2 and the XT

Well I just had to uprade for that very reason Guy M. Carry 2 1 Series bodies and lenses and accessories was too much for the Tamrac 5575, to I got the 5577. It works just fine for 2 bodies now.

The back and hip straps are 2nd to none for a camera backpack. And its weather resistant with rain seals and hood all over. Might be worth checking out. Theres an even bigger version as well, and these are compatible with the MAS addon containers

I just got the Computrekker Plus, which is rated for up to a 400/2.8, and just finished laying it all out. I managed to pack in everything in my sig (well, the 200's not here yet but the dimensions work) plus two CP-E3's (flash battery packs) and a Sekonic light meter in the main compartment. The MKII sits in it very well if put in with the hot shoe facing up- with the right grip/strap side facing up, it works OK height-wise, but the protruding viewfinder becomes a problem. It's pretty much my backpack dream come true, a Nature Trekker with a laptop compartment. I'll get pics up when my big beast arrives .

When posting pictures of backpacks with 8 bodies, and 22 lenses, can you step on a scale, and give the aproximate weight of the backpack w/ gear...

In all seriousness, how much do these things weigh when fully loaded?

I built a backpack when i got my Rebel - it takes a lot more gear than the sholder bag i had for my Fui S602.

I got a whopping $20 in it...a clearance backpack at Toys R us (Dr Grind brand) and some padding i had, i got some velcro and used coroplast for the interior structure. (plastic corrugated carboard-like material).

In I have: Rebel body w/ lens, 50mm 1.8 lens, vivitar 135mm lens, metz 54 flash, lightsphere 2, extension tubes. I have room for a few more items in the main compartment..the lightsphere is huge.
There are outside pockets taht hold teh flash accessories (hot shoe adapter. PC cords, etc) a pocket for batteries for the flash and camera, anotehr pocket for more cords (AV, remote, etc) and the last compartment has mnodel releases, pens, paper, manuals, extra caps for the body, memory cards. i can strap teh tripod to the back of it as well.

The good and the bad: does not look like a photo backpack (good) and was dirt cheap (good). The main compartment does not open fully (bad) and i wish it had a few more pockets, but the bags i looked had similar failings. I love the room i have, and it is great to carry, lots better than a shoulder bag. A PITA at times to swap stuffi in and out, but that is the price you pay for a backpack.

I have some under construction phtotos, but this is th eonly one i have online. I guess I have to go get an interior loaded shot, huh?

Guy,

Have you looked at Moose Peterson's backpacks? I think they may be the answer for travelling by air, especially if you have big glass to carry. I'm probably going to get the MP-3, although I'm sorely tempted by the MP-1
