Thanks for posting that SL3-SL2 image comparison LBJ2. I wonder if that recessed sensor at the top of the SL3 grip is the new Lidar AF sensor that Panasonic is now starting to install on some of their cameras?

I thought Lidar AF was supposed to be better than phase detect, especially in low light. Why would they need both systems in the same camera? I’m asking legitimately, I don’t know if there are still things that phase detect does better.

Lidar is an evolving tech so it's not going to replace PDAF/CDAF anytime soon, if ever. Who knows, maybe the recessed sensor in the SL3's hand grip is just a tally light ;-)

Wouldn't it just get covered by fingers if that's its location?

Why haven't you tried the SL APO35? It's superior in every way.

What's missing on the X2D after the latest update? Histogram and face detect are there. The manual focus experience with the XCDV lenses is better than M lenses on the SL2. And it's the logical upgrade to your H6. Then you just have the X2D and A1 systems.

I made a poll at LuF. Many people agreed with you and we know Stefan Daniels saw it. So there's hope.

What is the silver looking round button to the left of the EVF where the SL2 on/off switch is located?

While I did love the SL2s I had for a while, I found it too heavy and large to actually use much. So, a smaller S3 would be nice. Then again, I’m not willing to pay for new Leicas (only ever bought them secondhand). So, by the time I’d be willing/able to buy the S3, I’m sure the other brands have developed new tech.

Also, currently, my FF gear is already Leica (M11 and Q2M) and Canon. I’d have a hard time swapping my best Canon glass - RF 50/1.2 and RF 135/1.8 - for any L-mount glass. And Leica would have to come quite a way to match Canon’s eye-AF.

So, I fear the SL3 will join the ranks of the new Hasselblads as too expensive that even I can’t rationalize my GAS.

I have now used my SL2S system out in windy, sandy and rainy conditions and I find the system's sealing against these elements of great importance to me. It performed admirably and at times better than I performed as far as coping with the elements was concerned.

The last outing for 2 weeks in and around Death Valley the SL2S was especially appreciated due to intense weather combined with extremely high and gusty winds. I knew I wanted a camera system better sealed against the elements than my M system and I got it with the SL2S.

Understand your comments. As for eye AF, my SL2S sprang to life with eye/follow AF after a FW update late last year. Do not remember the number, but to me that put it ahead of its former self by a wide margin.

It was too bad Leica did not offer this upgrade when the camera was newly out since I fear many obtained and sold their SL2's before this FW update was issued and as such were never able to avail themselves of this major upgrade via FW.

As for glass those APO primes cannot be matched to date. That said it would be nice if a 135mm came along. The APO 90 is stellar as is the APO 28.

Don’t think I’ll ever want to spend the money on Leica L lenses.

Death Valley is on my short list. And more than once planned the SL2 system as my DV kit thanks to its IP54 rating. Good to know you can confirm your SL2 system was up to the task, real world.

Death Valley and IP54? It is the driest place in the US. It only gets 2.24 inches of rain per year. When I visited the first time it was 127°F. What am I missing?

Of late that 2.24 inches has been blown out of the water every 1-2 weeks this year in the last month and not spread over 365 days, but often half that number comes day after day. That makes for flooding since DV cannot absorb that much moisture in such a short period of time.

Yes. From what I read, the "5" out of max 6 rating in IP54 is pretty good protection against the potential of dust/sand intrusion.

I have never given the sand or fine dust much thought when I visited, the last time I visited was with the Leica M9 and the Leica S2P, the latter one is obviously weather-sealed but also the M9 performed without hiccups.
