I just purchased an a7C R, after long deliberation, going through countless videos and articles, and comparing it to the a7R V in a camera store. The prices are quite similiar in Europe at this point, but I can live with that.
Ultimately, I can accept the compromises, as I value and appreciate the lower weight and compactness more than what the a7R V provides. The resolution of the a7R V's viewfinder and screen are noticeably better, which is to be expected when inspecting the specifications, but the a7C R's is more than adequate for my use. It is still good, in my opinion, as in the finder seems quite sharp, although the resolution is quite low. I have no problems with the smaller viewfinder, whether looking through it horisontally or vertically, and also have no problems manually focusing. My vision is great, and I do not use any glasses, but people with lesser vision or glasses might be more hindered.
Furthermore, I actually do not mind the articulating screen. I thought I would be bothered by it when framing horisontally, but it works just fine. It will probably be a bit annoying when using a camera upside down on a tripod, but I do not do that so often. Also do not mind one card shot; I only photograph passionately, I can accept the risk, and I also transfer images once I get home from any walk or trip. Joysticks are control dials are interchangable for me, so I do not mind the lack of a joystick. I prefer to adjust most settings manually, and I usually do not need to change more than the exposure and focus point, so I am fine with fewer dials.
Previously, I actually had an a7R V, but I decided to give Fujifilm X a try with their X-T5. I have always admired the Fuji X cameras due to the prominent dials and film simulations, and I wanted something lighter as well. It was a great process, and I do not regret experimenting with Fuji, but I did miss the better image quality. I was originally going to get another a7R V, but I think the a7C R is a great middleground.
I will probably pair the a7C R with the Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL, which I kept, Sigma 17mm f/4 DN, Sony 40mm f/2.5 G and Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DN. Might add the Olympus 200mm f/5, when I occasionally need a longer tele, but I mostly use wide to standard for landscape and architecture.
I generally enjoy primes more than zooms due to size, weight and to make due with certain focal lengths, and approximately doubling the focal length usually works for me.
