Apologies if this has already been answered; Does anyone know where the pre-capture data is stored ? Is it being constantly written to the card(s) or is it stored internally and only written to the card when the shutter is pressed?
I suspect there is some internal storage, would writing and re-writing data to the card while the shutter is half-pressed potentially cause some long-term issues with the cards?

All cameras utilize the internal camera memory/buffer for this functionality, as far as I know.

Was covering a pro sports event last night where a A9iii pre production was being tested in an arena with strobes. I’m a Nikon shooter but chatted with the photographer who I know out of curiosity for his experience with it.
He showed me a photo on the back of the camera that he took before the game testing strobes and camera setup with a 1/16000 shutter speed and it looked like a normal one he would take with his A1 which he synchs at 1/400.
This will be a game changer for sports settings like this and open up all kinds of possibilities for different looks like black background etc. Very cool.

Why did Sony move the movie record button back to beside the viewfinder? Can’t they freaking decide where to put the button?
You know that you can reassign that as you please? Or simply use the shutter button for video mode, too?

The main problem is that they switch it with the c1 button… my Dji gimbal has the c1 button so I cannot reassign the c1 button else I will lose the c1 function on the Dji gimbal.
Why did they switch the record button… are they going back to a7iii/a9 style?? Common, it is not that tough to decide where to put the red button, since it’s programmable, just stop switching it over and over again.

I know there are those who need it, but it would drive me nuts having to go through 1000's of images recorded from a few seconds of shooting. Good on Sony for innovating.
It’s hundreds, not thousands, and Sony showed a Quick Look at how you do it - you can open a burst, posy back and forth to find the frame or frames you want, tag them, and upload just those. It’s in the announcement video.

It cannot be on the card, because the card just isn’t fast enough. The pre-capture buffer is in RAM, as a circular buffer, and that RAM may wear out eventually but modern RAM will last decades of continuous writing.
When you press the shutter it starts writing that buffer to card starting from the point which is “precapture amount before the current instant”. I think they said the buffer is over 6 gigabytes. Sounds about right if you are holding the uncompressed 24Mp image data (call it about 48-50MB per frame, and the pre buffer is up to 1 second at 120fps, that would be 50 x 120 = 6000 MB…)

This is funny because this exactly Sony technology will eventually end up in a Nikon camera simply because Nikon buy Sony sensors. No doubt Nikon will also add some "secret sauce" inside, like an 1lb piece of metal so the camera would feel ROCK SOLID
But the new AF is not in the sensor. It’s the BIONZ CPUs + that “AI” chip. Nikon may have to develop its own new AF.

That “no control while saving buffer” went away with the new BIONZ CPU in the A1. It’s in every body since the A1.
I would assume so (regards no control while saving buffer). The A9III though, is radically different. So until we know for sure, I'm just being cautious.
Regards the CFE-A:
A is 20mm x 28mm x 2.8mm.
B is 38.5 x 29.8 x 3.8mm.
That is a lot of extra space required. Advancements in CFE-A tech, or new card with same form factor is more likely IMHO.

Keep in mind that the slots in Sony cameras are not CF express type A slots but rather a mix of SD and type A. SD cards are in between type A and B cards in size so it is not quite that big difference.
Cameras like Canon R5, Nikon Z7 II is has type B and SD slots without being that much bigger than A9III. I believe what Sony ultimately chooses to do in future cameras depends on what customers demand.

I assume the size difference been the Canon R5 and any modern Sony body would be larger if the R5 had 2 Type B slots instead of just the 1.

It's just three 3 second bursts at 120/fps to get to over 1000 images. Seems like most folks that use this frame rate (sports/wildlife photographers) will be doing this for a couple of hours. That's a LOT of in-camera culling.
