Seems he is using lossless or uncompressed raws in his buffer testing, one would think anyone concerned about buffer depth would use lossy compressed raws which doubles the buffer capacity.

Has anyone seen any videos comparing the 300GM and 400GM? I want something for owls this fall, and the 300GM is so much cheaper than the 400GM (even second hand)

I haven't seen any direct comparisons tot he Sony 400 but I can say this. I know its not the same but I own the Nikon 400 & 600 TC Z lenses and the 300GM. I bought the 300GM to have a small portable kit to hike and kayak shoot with. The 300 is easily equal to those in terms of IQ and Sharpness. AF speed may even be faster. Also with TCs the 300 is simply stellar. The 1.4 shows no loss in AF or IQ from what I've seen on both the A1 and A9III. The 2x might have the slightest hit in sharpness but its better than any other lens I've ever seen with a 2x on it. Its also stupid small and light.

Really comes down to if 300mm is enough focal length for the owl locations you shoot.
I own the 400GM and have borrowed the 300GM from my friend a few times now.
I have my 400GM up for sale and once it sells I'm replacing it with the 300GM.
The 300GM is just so small and light and it handles TCs better than any Sony lens I've owned.
The 400GM does good with the 1.4TC but I don't like it with the 2xTC. The 300GM did really well with the 2xTC.
300GM is the fastest AF lens I've used and TCs only slow it a little bit.
If you think 300mm would work a lot of the time and/or think f/4 (instead of f/2.8) at 420mm would work then I'd save the $$ and go 300GM. And when f/5.6 is okay you have a super compact 600mm lens...as small and light as the Nikon 600PF and a 1/3 stop faster.

Right now, most of the owls need 600mm (I have the 600GM). I may hold off for the season and reevaluate for next year. There may be some second hand 300GMs on the market by then. Thanks!
