p.1 #1 · Official: Sony A9 III and FE 300mm f/2.8 GM announced
The highly-anticipated Sony a9 III has been unveiled, featuring a cutting-edge global shutter that effectively eliminates rolling shutter distortion and allows for flash synchronization at any shutter speed. This exciting announcement took place during a Creative Space event held in New York on November 7, where Sony also introduced the new Sony FE 300mm f2.8 GM OSS lens.
It's the lightest full-frame 300mm f2.8 lens available. This G Master lens is designed for smooth bokeh and sharp subjects, featuring advanced optics with an 11-blade circular aperture. It pairs well with the Sony a9 III, designed for sports with quick and quiet autofocus. You can use teleconverters, and it offers a quick APS-C crop mode. Both the camera and lens are set for a Spring 2024 release, priced at $5,999 each.
Sony A9 III Main Features:
24.6-megapixel full-frame stacked sensor
Global shutter at up to 120 fps
No flash sync speed limits, even while using third-party flashes
Global shutter also eliminates banding caused by flickering lights
Shutter speed up to 1/80,000 in single shot, burst up to 1/16,000
Shortcut button to quickly go from 20 fps to 120 fps
In-camera star rating to quickly sort through those 120 fps bursts
Pre-capture for up to 1 second before the shutter is released
Real-time eye autofocus, even with 120 fps
759 autofocus points covering 95.6 percent of the frame
Low light autofocus down to -5 EV at f1.8
Tilting LCD touchscreen
9.44 million dot OLED EVF with 120 fps refresh rate at highest quality 240 fps with reduced quality

I watched the whole thing and honestly for me it raised more questions than it answered.
Except for the 300 2.8 lens it felt more like a development announcement with a bit more detail. Non of the usual removal of embargo information being published by reviewers that have actually had the camera in hand to test. Release of the A9III is actually next year. It seems much earlier in the development cycle than normal for a release announcement.
The firmware updates are coming around the second quarter of next, and are very limited in nature. Nothing in the A1 feature set that I will find very useful.
So much missing information missing about the A9III. Particularly when it comes to noise, dynamic range, and file formats. The high base ISO may be a tip off about those compromises. I will wait for more complete information to come. Right now we basically only got box front specifications. I am thinking many of those may come with an * as more detailed information comes out.
The new technology and advancements from the Global shutter does seem to offer some significant features. It ill be interesting to watch as this camera becomes more tested and known.

Yea but are you really going to trust these reviewers out there. They are not working jerks to really get into the heart of it. I never even look at there stuff. And I agree noting REALLY being said but you know some spec facts at this point. I would like to try it via renting and with that 300mm it solves a big gig for me that I make really good money from so even a 1k rental fee for both I would jump on if its in my time frame like Jan.1 I need it

While I’m impressed by the specs, who needs 120fps? That just sounds like a nightmare to me. 1/80.000 of a second? Why?
So you can take images of bullets in the air without motion blur .

You have to be exceedingly myopic to not understand how this is a great add.
Yup. Like, this is not for me, but I totally see how this body is perfect for sports shooters. I notice that whenever a new camera is released, people are upset that its not specifically designed for their needs. I don't get it.

It's always the same few people that can't fathom anything outside of their limited first hand experience.
As usual, Sony has a camera that will set a high bar for the competition for the next few years.

I know there are those who need it, but it would drive me nuts having to go through 1000's of images recorded from a few seconds of shooting. Good on Sony for innovating.

ha ha .. true. Hobbyists don't really need more than 10-20 fps at most.
I hardly ever shoot at 30 fps on my a1 because of the large amount of reviewing and culling involved later on.
I am sure sports photogs who depend on getting the money shot, will appreciate it, but still 120 is overkill.
More like Sony's taunting the other brands - "See what we can do? What are you guys capable of doing?"

I don't shoot anything that the A9III would be good for, but damn, it certainly sounds awesome for people who do. Impressive specs.
The 300/2.8 almost sounds impossible...1500 grams?!? Wow, Sony hacked nearly a kilo off! Gerald's review leads me to believe that it is, more or less, perfectly sharp, edge to edge.
Kudos yet again to Sony's lens designers. To those who need such a lens, they got a beauty.
