The z8 is really tempting. I have 14mm Gm, 24mm Gm, 35mm f1.2 dg dn, 50mm Gm, 85mm dg dn. Will they work well on the z8 through an adapter? I mean vs using them on my a7m4, a7r5, what tradeoffs do I have to endure going to z8? I short mainly running kids burst mode afc. Is the af tracking in the z8 with adapted lens just as good? Does the ibis work seamlessly or do I have to program focal length?
So you know exactly what cameras I am comparing, I am comparing a Sony a7rII and Sony a7rIVa to the Nikon Z8.
I am using the Megadap ETZ21 PRO adapter. IBIS works seamlessly with the adapter, you don't have to enter the focal length like with a dumb adapter. I would say IBIS is working just as well on Nikon, if not a bit better then Sony. Not having a mechanical shutter definitely helps critical sharpness too, so I am still trying to figure out what sharpness is from the electronic shutter vs what sharpness is from possibly better IBIS. Speaking of stabilization I do feel like my Nikon lenses with VR are more stable then the stabilization in my Sony 24-105 f4, or Sony 200-600 whether there mounted to a Sony camera or Nikon Z.
I don't have any of the GM prime lenses, or Sigma E lenses to directly compare. But with Sony 200-600 with and without the TC 1.4 I have found the AF on the Z8 using the adapter, just as good, if not maybe a bit better at times, as the lens performs on the a7rIV. I have used some F mount fast primes on the Z8 using the FTZ, such as the Nikon 85mm f1.4 and Sigma 28mm f1.4, and I have been happy with the AF performance. The AF seams to be working just as good if not better than any other body I have tried them on.
As for some things you might miss coming from Sony. I like Sonys continuous bracket timer, better than Nikons implementation if you like to shoot brackets. Nikon you either need to hold the shutter down for the whole bracket, or deal with a .5 sec delay between each photo in the bracket. You may also notice the difference in resolution. 45mp is more than enough resolution, but it's not 60mp. If you have grown accustom to 60mp you will notice the difference in crop ability. On Sony what ever you have on your back display is what you see when you switch to the EVF, on Nikon you can have one set of items displayed on your display, and another set of items displayed on the EVF. This can be a pro or con depending on your shooting preferences. Another pro / con depending on your preferences is the Nikon Z8 is definitely a larger camera. Especially with larger lenses I personally feel it feels better in my hands, but if you want you gear as small as possible you will notice the size increases. (Granted I believe the a7rV is a bit bigger then the a7rIV so you might not notice it as much) Also as well as the Megadap adapter works, it is still another piece of gear to deal with when changing lenses. (Just like a teleconverter)
If you don't already have Nikon gear, it might be worth renting one so you can directly compare to your current setup. For anyone thinking of picking up a Z8, I defiantly recommend picking up the bundle with the Z 24-120 f4 unless you really have no use for that focal length range. That lens hits almost all right boxes, it's got great image quality (especially for a zoom), the focal length range is very useful, AF works well, and the lens is relatively small and light weight.
