I think half the Sony thread is probably Nikon or Canon converts.

I shoot both, so don't have a horse in this race

The main thing that is stopping me from switching to Nikon is the lens… the good telephoto prime like 135mm plena is much more expensive than say Sony 135mm gm. You can also get things like 85mm dg dn which is even cheaper.

There also isn’t any 35mm f1.4 or 24mm f1.4… the money I save on getting the z8 does not help if I spend so much more on lens.

Having owned both, the Plena is really a significantly better lens than the Sony GM IMHO. The Sony is very sharp but delivers flat images lacking contrast, bokeh is also not that great.

Nikon is expected to come up with a 35mm f1.2 any time soon.

Cheers,
Bernard

Price wise, each camp seems to leapfrog each other when releasing new lens so the newer lenses are almost always more expensive. Once in awhile,
one camp may undercut others a bit but that is an exception rather than the rule.

If Sony decides to refresh 135/1.8GM, more likely than not, it will be more expensive than Plena as well.

There is always an option to use adapter. Some people are comfortable using it, some not so much. I bought Sony 14/1.8 this year even though I have not touch my A7r IV in a long time but I want to use it with Nikon body as I believe that Nikon is not going to release anything similar anytime soon and it is so much smaller and lighter than Sigma F mount option with even better performance.

I owned the 135mm gm and I agree on the bokeh. Contrast is there but the bokeh is not that smooth but I am nitpicking. Nikon has nothing at the price point of the 135mm gm. it is either super expensive or the f1.8 primes...

I think there is a bigger market for slightly cheaper, lighter and good f1.4 primes. I don't really agree on Nikon strategy of such expensive f1.2 primes or f1.8 primes with a name tagged on it.

Sony has to compete with sigma and tamron. I don't think they can price their lens as high as canon Nikon and they don't.

I am considering an adaptor but it is not ideal, mounting is tricky, AF (video?) not as good. If one is spending this amount of money, the expectations are pretty high.

The Nikon z8 with adapted lens needs to be better than my a7r5 with native lens.

It was oversubscribed years ago and so they shut it down and created the Sony forums

I am mostly a wildlife photographer and the used market for superteles as well as no alternative for the 800PF made me switch. I got an 800PF new on sale + a used 400 2.8 FL for less than the price of a used 600GM (least in my country). There are also more and cheaper Z9's on the used market than there are A1's. I have gotten a lot of bargains on used E-mount lenses, and tried the megadap ETZ before I bought anything Nikon, and it is incredibly good. So I saved a lot of money on not switching lenses, which means that if I find out later that I want to switch back for whatever reason, I just need to sell the Z9 and the superteles which sell quite easily.
I miss some things of the Sony, mostly the customization possibilities. Nikon has way better image stabilization on long lenses. The AF on Sony is easier to use straight out the box, and the Z9 grabs backgrounds more often while trying to track moving birds. Other than that the performance is about the same to me.

Yep, the lack of legacy, used superteles is why I've never seriously considered Sony. For wildlife shooters, the only choice Sony gives you is to pay $2K for the 200-600 or $12K-$13K for the 400mm f/2.8 or 600mm f/4. On the Nikon and Canon sides, I could buy both of the previous versions of the 600mm f/4 and 400mm f/2.8 for less than $12K. Sony's value proposition never made sense for me.

I'm also new in Nikon's camp. Coming from Sony (all gear sold), still using Leica and Fuji, but recently adding a Z8. So far, imho, the best colors of any brand. I also prefer 40-45 mp to 60. And the only lens I own (24-120 f4 s) makes me wonder how brilliant the top notch lenses are if this one is so good.

I also came to Nikon from Sony camp (still have couple of lenses). Really like the Z8 and 24-120 F4 (and 14-30 f4) but after recent travel I did question my choice as this combo is quite bit bigger than A7rV + 16-35 PZ + Tamron 35-150 combo that I had used in my previous travel.

No doubt that OOC colors are definitely better with Nikon

There's no doubt that Sony kits pack better than "equivalent" Nikon kits.

Doesn't make me want to shoot with a Sony in any regard, though.

au contraire, an available z lens for you to buy with financing is the "devine" sign to try the z8. 👍

it's a blessing in disguise! 👍🤣

Looks like I'm getting Devine signs not to try Nikon Z8. Received the camera last week but have no lenses to test. Megadep adapter from BHPhoto has been lost by FedEx as it was supposed to delivered on Thursday but still shows as "delayed". Reached out BHPhoto and was told that they will ship a replacement in 5 days!!

Broke down and ordered 24-120 F4 from Bestbuy to take advantage of their 24 month financing and that lens is delayed as well 😑

+1
for me, nikon smallest fx and dx bodies are still too large for hiking and traveling; especially now with a drone in my pack.

a compact fx & dx option from nikon would definitely attracts more users.

Coming from a D850 as my light landscape kit Ifind the Z7II to be an excellent compromise size wise for landscape in the wild. Especially when used with Voigtlander ApO-Lanthar 35/50mm.

wasn't it sony's choice to license sigma & tamron?

I've been a Sony shooter since the original A7, but I'm seriously thinking about a switch to Nikon.

The Z8 is a great camera. I do like a lot about it, but after trying it a couple of times now some things are holding me back:
- You always have to go into the menu to set a minimum shutter speed for auto ISO (when you don't use auto shutter speed there).
- Magnification doesn't exit when you press the shutter button (+ it also lags badly, in another thread I already asked if this is the "normal" behavior and sadly it is).
- Focus bracketing: you need to focus on the closest part of the scene/subject... then go into the menu and select start. This feels so sluggish. On the A7RV you can select it as a drive mode, focus where you want to start and press the shutter. This even makes handheld focus brackets possible, it's easy and fast. Not so on the Nikon.

Sony often (still) gets criticized for their menus, but you hardly have to use them because you can put almost any function on any button or wheel. This not the case with Nikon. I know it takes some getting used to, but still... the amount of customization feels limited.

Please tell me if I'm wrong about some of these points (I'd love to be wrong here )
