I am mostly a wildlife photographer and the used market for superteles as well as no alternative for the 800PF made me switch. I got an 800PF new on sale + a used 400 2.8 FL for less than the price of a used 600GM (least in my country). There are also more and cheaper Z9's on the used market than there are A1's. I have gotten a lot of bargains on used E-mount lenses, and tried the megadap ETZ before I bought anything Nikon, and it is incredibly good. So I saved a lot of money on not switching lenses, which means that if I find out later that I want to switch back for whatever reason, I just need to sell the Z9 and the superteles which sell quite easily.
I miss some things of the Sony, mostly the customization possibilities. Nikon has way better image stabilization on long lenses. The AF on Sony is easier to use straight out the box, and the Z9 grabs backgrounds more often while trying to track moving birds. Other than that the performance is about the same to me....Show more →
Yep, the lack of legacy, used superteles is why I've never seriously considered Sony. For wildlife shooters, the only choice Sony gives you is to pay $2K for the 200-600 or $12K-$13K for the 400mm f/2.8 or 600mm f/4. On the Nikon and Canon sides, I could buy both of the previous versions of the 600mm f/4 and 400mm f/2.8 for less than $12K. Sony's value proposition never made sense for me.
