Does the job for indoor sports, and remarkably feels much smaller to handle than the 70-200 S.

Surely the 1/3200 could be bumped down a smidge for largely static/posed shots like that? I don't even shoot birds that fast!

Yeah, about a quarter of that would have been fine. I still had it cranked up for the vault I think.

I got BG and Zadi together, their previous human went into the hospital, then passed away. These two were left alone in the house for about 3 months. The sister put out an SOS on Facebook, and a place I follow gave it a boost. I resisted at first....

Parker on the other hand, was abandoned, my best guess, when an apartment building next to where I work was emptied out and residents displaced while they renovated. He was scrounging in the parking lot for months, and I got him and another cat to trust me. Last October, I got written up for taking care of them, then told to "get rid of them because they were scratching the tires of the manager's $65,000 Jeep or the manager was going to get rid of them." (good thing I still wear masks at work!!!)

So I made an appointment with my vet, put two carriers in my car, (which cost more than the Jeep, but I digress) and after I clocked out, when I knew they would be looking for me, I saw one, but couldn't catch him. I did manage to grab Parker, and got him checked out. They had an opening the following morning for neutering, so he stayed overnight, and got chipped, dipped, and snipped.

Parker was supposed to go to a Catfe shelter that would take him, but they have a process to check them out first. So Parker went to that appointment, and they determined he needed a bit of training first, as he seemed to have trust issues, so I'd have to keep him a bit longer.

Couple months go by, they still don't have room for him in their special facility, but he's supposed to be next on the list, Year rolls over, yep... he's still here, and overcoming the trust issues, and filling out for sure.

I’m curious (dumb question) if there’s a huge difference in portraits between a wide open plena and wide open 105 macro. Quality, bokeh, compression etc. all aspects.

I haven’t used my 105 MC for portrait in a side by side comparison to share, but can say that the Plena is the best portrait lens I own. I’ve seen others use the 105 MC for portrait with nice results though and in some conditions it could be a close comparison. But in general, with both lenses wide open, the Plena can provide better separation at normal portrait shooting distances, better out of focus render for a wider range of foreground and background distances and environmental conditions, better specular highlights, and better bokeh color and uniformity. Both lenses can provide razor sharpness on the pupil anywhere the eye is in the frame.

Of my 10 lenses with suitable focal lengths for portrait, I reach for the Plena 1st. I’d reach for the MC maybe 5th to 7th but I also would gladly shoot portrait with the 105 if that’s what I was carrying and the right subject unexpectedly popped up.

The 105MC is a splendid portrait lens. (As is, it should be noted, and to an even greater degree, the 70-200/2.8).

Is there a "huge difference"? To many members of this forum, the answer would be an emphatic "yes", as they peep deeply into the pixelated glory of 400% magnification. The Plena rewards this. And I think to the general public the answer would be less emphatic, and perhaps disputing the use of the word "huge", but yes. Your clients will notice the difference in most cases in outdoor/on location shoots.

But if you're someone shooting portraits against a fixed background with little variation, in a completely controlled studio situation, the difference between the Plena at f/1.8 and the 105MC f/2.8 will matter far less (and may be a detriment, as you might want the entire head of your subject in focus, for example.)

The Plena is a singular lens. But is it worth the price in a studio setting? Only you, your style choices, and your budget can say. For me, it's become my favorite street photography lens. This and the 50/1.2 in the bag makes for a perfect day.

Idk if I’d actually spring for its cost but it’d get used everywhere lol. Lots of kids running around. Around town. Inside I have limited space so I’d maybe stick to 24-120, 50 1.8 and 85 1.8.

There's always the 50/1.2 if you're looking for a less expensive, but still truly epic lens...

I had that in mind.

Hard hurdle to clear when I have the 50 1.8 and nothing longer than 105 at 2.8 and 24-120 f4.

I’ll likely wait it out and enjoy everyone’s photos here.

One thing I noticed, the rear element on the Plena was larger than the my 1.2 glass... or did I see wrong?

Z8 + Plena @ f1.8

I honestly think that this is the best bokeh I have seen from any lens. And I have been fortunate to use some of the best glass ever designed. Just stunning.

I was speaking a few days ago with a designer in one of the companies designing cinema cameras and lenses in Japan and he thought that the Plena was one of the few lenses on the market that approaches cine lenses quality.

Cheers,
Bernard

Lenstip released a glowing review. The Plena is easily the best 135mm they’ve tested:

https://www.lenstip.com/691.1-Lens_review-Nikon_Nikkor_Z_135_mm_f_1.8_S_Plena_Introduction.html

“Resolution: The Nikkor 1.8/135 performs so exceedingly well that it breaks all record results and it does it with ease.”

Yes, fair review, this is a truly amazing piece of glass.

I find the new 35mm f1.2 S to be very close as well.

There is little doubt that Nikon will continue to release reference glass moving forward.

Love it.

And the car shot needs some backstory.
