I just finished my edit from this evening. It was not good light to test my 180-600mm lens. Overall… I’m not happy with what I’m seeing, but I think it has more to do with harsh light and atmospheric haze than anything else.
With that said, I managed to capture a pretty dramatic picture of my latest muse. It is a bit of a crop that was already a DX crop from the 600mm end of the 180-600.
This shot is very unique as it includes some dramatic light and hints of fall.

A bit where I am - do I get the 180-600 or do I got for the 400/4.5 knowing I have the 70-200/2.8 and 1.4 TC
Is the difference in IQ substantial aside from the extra stop gained at 400 ?
FWIW only: I bought the 100-400 to try because I was using my 70-200 virtually 100% of the time with the 1.4x. I eventually sold the 70-200 due to non-use and set the money aside. I debated long over the 400/4.5, but my 100-400 was so good at 400 and I definitely appreciate and use it as my “do-all” zoom; far more versatile than my 70-200 was — except having f2.8 in the 150-200 range, and if I buy the 70-200 back it will be for that reason alone.
I have the 800 and love it; lightweight and excellent optically.
I recently got the 180-600. Frankly incredible for the money, S performance at a non-S price. At 600, it’s almost on par with the 800 unless you pixel peep, the biggest thing being a little lower contrast. It’s good enough at 840 with the 1.4x I think I could be okay leaving the 800 behind when room or weight is a primary concern. My current nit is it’s so good I’m wondering how much I will use the 100-400, but then the 100-400 is tiny by comparison (essentially the same size as the 70-200) and works decently with the 1.4x too. So for now it stays until I get a better handle on how much I want to use it. If (when??) I sell the 100-400, I’ll likely replace it with another 70-200. But for now I don’t miss f2.8 or not having the 70-100 range on it, so no real incentive to make that change.

Nice shot - I got my 180-600 this week and just tested out on my kids out front. Indeed and to no surprise having good light is critical as the ISO can shoot up as soon as the sun starts to go down with f/6.3.
This said I like the quality of what I am seeing

Thank you...
I normally use my 800PF for this type of work, as the deer was pretty far away. However, this was my first chance to use the 180-600, and other than give up 200mm, it did fine. I'll be running copy through a variety of shooting situations this week and try to learn about its strengths and weakness. I am hoping that it will be a good option for international travel and kayaking where weight and flexibility will be a priority.

Agree with your thinking
I sold my 100-400 which I loved but was using at the longer end so sold it as the 180-600 made it redundant as I have the 70-200/2.8 - I had a 500 of which I also sold
Wildlife isn’t my main area of shooting, so hard to justify spending on a 400/2.8 TC which for me would be my ideal long lens

Rainbow Lorikeets are great to photograph as they are a riot of colour and have a very bold personality. These guys were feeding on native Grevillea outside a golf course.

You always post beautiful quality images Lance , looks like the 180-600 is performing nicely . TBH I wasn't interested in this lens but am very interested in the 600mm pf with Z8 or 9 to maybe replace my A1 200-600 . I like the A1 but apart from the 600mm f4 GM not much other choices for wildlife .

Thank you very much, Leon. Much appreciated!
If I didn't already have the 180-600 and then the 600 PF had come out beforehand, I might be using the 600 PF instead of the 180-600 now. I have the 500 PF with my 800 PF as a great combo, but a native 600 PF would be a better combo for me. However, the 180-600 is excellent and is a zoom, albeit heavier but is more versatile as in this situation where I needed to zoom in and out. The 180-600 + 800 PF combo is excellent for me at this stage. As with everything, you must make valuations as to your use case.

I am sharing a few photos from yesterday morning's shoot. This was my second outing with the 180-600, and I am beginning to warm up to it. I definitely had some decent light, and this helps. I also did a field comparison of images between it and the 800PF. I'll be doing similar shoots in the coming days and post a description of the comparison on my blog... more on that in the future.
The first photo was taken across the river (300 meters or so) w/ the Z8 + 180-600. It is a full frame w/ cropping to level and shot handheld.
The second photo was also taken across the river w/ the Z8 + 180-600 it is a DX shot w/ cropping to level.
The third and fourth photos were taken from the same location within five minutes of each other. Both are DX crops with one being shot taken with Z + 180-600 and the other with the Z9 + 800PF. The test was not fair, as I shot the 800PF with a tripod and the 180-600 without one. To be clear, it is likely that I will not use a tripod as often with the 180-600... this is especially true until I can buy a better collar for that lens.
I had to do some additional cropping with the Z8 that was not done with the Z9. There are lots of clues as to which is which, but I’ll give you all a guess before I do the reveal 😉
Based on my short use, I can definitely see how the 180-600 will be able to fit into my workflow.
regards,
bruce
