Starting the inevitable 180-600 image thread. Only had a few minutes with it as I had to go to work a few minutes after it showed up but I had to take a few bokeh test shots as that is what I'm most curious about with this lens. It can render nicely, but does have a lot of double edging going on here. These are high iso 8k z8 jpgs all wide open. Will update with better real world examples this weekend.
If anyone wants any specific kind of sample shots let me know, I'll try and provide

The doubling is a bit interesting because it doesn't seem to quite jive with the typical Nisen bokeh issue of line/edge doubling. If it were caused by Niseh bokeh I'd expect to see bright rims on the specular bokeh balls in the very first image, but instead they are nice and smooth.
Was VR (aka IS) turned on for these shots? That can sometimes do weird things too.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share even these first quick images! Hope you get time to enjoy the lens soon.

I'm glad you were one of the first to get your hands on this lens. I've seen what you're capable of using higher tier glass so if this lens doesn't stand up to scrutiny we can be pretty sure it's all on the lens and not the user. Looking forward to more samples and especially your impressions. TFS

Hey, thanks for the kind words. I will certainly keep the images coming! I'm loving it so far, it is a little soft wide open compared to the primes but I think it helps with the overall render. It's not soft to the point where LR can't crisp it up a bit and I've had no complaints about shooting wide open.

I took a couple comparison shots with the 180-600 at 560mm f6.3 and f8 vs the 100-400 with 1.4 TC at f8. Nothing scientific, just quick snaps with similar settings, imported raw files into NX and exported as full quality jpg. Nothing else was changed.

These are great and exactly what I have been wanting to see! I have a bit of a different question—any idea how the 180-600 at 400mm wide open compares to the 100-400 at 400mm wide open (both without TCs)? I am trying to decide whether to take the 100-400 or the 180-600 to Botswana as my mid-range zoom (in addition to my long prime) and would want the 180-600 to be roughly as sharp in the mid-ranges. Haven’t seen anyone comment on that including Ricci in his initial review. If you have any thoughts on this I would love to hear them. Thanks again for posting these!

No problem! I Will try and catch up with my friend with the 100-400 again and take a few non TC samples. The lens seems stronger from 180-450 or so but don’t quote me on this yet, just a preliminary observation. I’m out shooting again today, I’ll try and get some more midrange samples.
