... they did a torture test where they were running erratically at the camera. To be fair, this isn't exactly an objective test either, since I imagine a lot of variability could happen from test to test, just based on the exact way they're running, the path they take, etc.

Is it just me, or does it look like the Sony GMII has way better color and contrast than the other three lenses? He did say the images are from different cameras and different times, but I found that distracting.

The new Tamron does show slightly better sharpness than the G1, so I guess that's all we can tell from those images given the lack of consistency in the other variables.

It's not just you - I noticed the same thing. It is too bad that the tests were run using different cameras although I don't know how much that played a role in the differences seen. The new Tamron looks quite good in terms of sharpness, but the contrast and color in the test chart did not look so great. I have to say that his non-test chart images looked really nice though and perfectly acceptable.

I do see some optical improvements over the G1 version; which are very welcome.
Flare resistance seems worse somehow though? and colors looks warmer? more yellow-ish compared to the blue-ish G1?

^This is a good quick overview. You don't need to know Cantonese to understand most of it.

No, it's not you. GM II contrast and color "punch" look amazing in comparison (the colors of the 3 other lenses look "washed out" in comparison, which is insane as these are great (looking at real file images from G2)).
That said, Tammy G2 improvements are impressive considering the "contained price".

Good to see more updated versions. I would definitely wait for the sigma 70-200 2.8 to be announced and see if its better (if I were looking for a 70-200). Not everyone can afford 3k on the godly amazing gm ii so its good to have more options. I'll be curious to see what sigma does.

This is really compelling. Love my current 70-180mm but lack of stabilization and average build quality got me thinking of an upgrade. Can’t wait to try it out.

It seems a better lens than the G1 release, now available in Nikon Z mount too.
As a Nikon user, if the G2 lens is *significantly* better than the G1 (I mean, we are not just seeing different reviews and scores on the basis of sample variations ...), and considering that it has built-in stabilization, could be more convenient to buy this lens and adapt it (e.g., Megadap ETZ 21 Pro) rather than to buy the Z 70-180/2.8 ?
I know the adapter could be costly, however the combo still remains cheaper, smaller and lighter than the Z 70-200/2.8 S.
Anyway, I wait for @BastianK review

While it is interesting that Tamron has updated the lens for Sony and Nikon has commissioned Tamron to build the original as an "OEM" lens for their kit, I do not buy into the notion that the G1/Nikon version is not worth considering over an adapted lens. As a Nikon shooter, I must admit that I hate adapted lenses. I dislike adding any point of weakness between a lens and body, as I shoot a lot in bad weather. Furthermore, I always want to optimize AF speed, and as good as adapters are, they do not bring out the best in a camera's capabilities. Finally, the original lens is light, narrow, and... dare I say... inexpensive. Faced with the need to fill a major gap between wide-angle and telephoto lenses, I had the choice of a 70-200 f/2.8S, 100-400 S, and 70-180 f2.8 non-S. Money was not the motivating factor, but size was. I carry two long telephoto lenses, 3 bodies, and a wide-angle lens in my bag... neither of the better lenses would allow me to do this. Clearly, I opted for the 70-180, and took advantage of the current sale price.
I've not shot it for about two weeks, and just don't see how a little more "sharpness" would benefit me... it's sharp enough with my Z9 and Z8. Furthermore, the IBIS in the camera gives me about 2 stops at 180mm... this means that I can shoot it at 1/60 of second... I'm good with this.
Of course, if this is going to be your ONE really good lens in the bag, then it definitely pays to buy the absolute best. For my shooting needs, I'm glad Nikon decided to commission Tamron to build less expensive f/2.8 lenses.. I now own two and find they are both stellar performers (17-28 f/2.8 and 70-180 f/2.8). For those who are looking at the 180-600... I'm still not convinced that this is not a Tamron co-designed lens... it looks like my two lenses as well as the Tamron 150-600... why wouldn't Nikon commission the Tamron factory if they could offer they consumers a quality optic at price that undercuts the competition?

It is already out:
https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-tamron-70-180mm-f-2-8-di-iii-vc-vxd-g2/

Long story short: pretty much all my points of criticism towards G1 have been addressed.
But I mainly had issues with the lack of controls and handling anyway.

Some people seem to wonder if the image quality has been improved compared to G1.
I wonder: what was there to improve? There wasn't anything wrong with the G1 in that regard imho.
If you are happy with the old one (and the lack of controls didn't drive you crazy, like it did me) there is no reason to waste money upgrading to the new one.

In the US there is no reason to still get the old one for $1200 when you can get the new one for $1300 though.
In the EU the situation is a bit different, with the G2 at 1500€ and G1 at 1140€.
I would consider either looking for a used G1 at a good price or waiting for the price of G2 to drop a bit.

I do see myself getting one of the G2 when the need for a fast telezoom arises, and it seems that will happen next year.

Well, according to the review posted by @sergun, G2 version has improved corner performance.

Thom Hogan too seems to stress that (Z-mount/G1) corners aren't that good (depending on FL and distance) even at medium apertures.
Of course, if one utilizes this lens for portraiture, border/corner sharpness is not relevant at all. However, if one wishes to use the lens for cityscapes & landscapes ... well, things are different; even sharpness is of utmost importance with today high-res bodies.

P.S.: I was comparing E-mount G2 version vs Z mount "G1" version that costs 1400 Euro.

For me the version 2 having ILIS is a big deal, and faster AF is always welcome as well.

My dilemma: this new 70-180mm or the 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8.... Too much redundancy to have both, however, at the same time the differences are significant as well.....

One of my readers mentioned that as well.
I was surprised how close they are in terms of weight as well as price (in Europe that is...).

@BastianK : I read your review, thanks. You've found that 135mm was the best focal ("Interestingly the 135mm setting was the worst on the previous lens, whereas this new version shows its best performance at this setting"), whereas other reviewers (Dustin Abbott and Stefan Malloch) found it to be the worst one.
Not sure if there could be a bit of variance in quality...

From my experience with the 35-150: when wide-open, the lens performs best in the 35-100 mm range. For an outstanding performance at 150 mm, the lens needs to be closed to at least F4, even better to F5.6. Naturally, cropping a 150 mm image to get an effective 180 (or even 200) mm image presents no problems on a 50-60 MP camera. I have no hands-on experience with the new 70-180 mm lens, however, if this lens is optimized to perform best at the longer end, then the choice depends on one's priorities. If shooting at 180 mm F2.8 is most important, then the 70-180 (or Sony 70-200 GMII) is an obvious choice. For general use, when the 35-100 mm range is important, with some use at 150 mm, then the 35-150 is a better lens.

They might look similar on paper but the difference in range (mostly) and aperture (to a lesser degree) determines their primary purpose IMHO. I treat 35-150 as a walkabout lens, which allows me to take those wide-ish shallow DoF shots at f2 and more typical portraits with some compression at 150/2.8.
If I was interested mostly in tele or action shots, then I'd buy 70-200/2.8 GM2 (or the new Tamron if size/weight/price is a consideration and I'd be okay with some missed action shots).

Thanks.
35-100mm maybe is the most important part. I'm often finding the 70mm end of the standard f/2.8 zoom limiting, and I would love to have something covering both the most important part of that standard zoom with a range up to 100mm at f/2.8. .

When going with the 70-180mm I can shoot a 24-70mm f/2.8 next to it on my R5. Changing cameras is faster than changing lenses, but turning a zoom ring is faster yet. On top of that the 35-150mm gives a larger aperture at 35-79mm. And with a 35-150mm I can still shoot that 24-70mm next to it, with the 35-70mm overlap reducing the risk of missed shots.

The 70-180 is less weight, stabilized, more affordable (1500 euro vs close to 2000 euro), and it focuses probably a bit faster.

Although 35-150mm gives a larger aperture at 35-79mm, it’s soft at 35/2 so I would want to stop it down some

Yes, it's so soft it's close to my 35/1.4 GM in the corner (I've posted pictures a long time ago).
