I received a review sample of the new Mark II 70-180mm 2.8.
If you have some questions already I will try to answer them, I am not allowed to publish a review before Sept. 14th though.

Does it really make any real life difference if it has optical stabilization, Sony cameras with IBIS work really well.
At the long end it will definitely make a difference.
I found the IBIS to work best in the 28-85mm range, out of that, not super effective...

Does the lens maintain the 1:2 macro capability on the wide end when manual focusing?
It is now 1:2.6, but from first pictures it looks like that field curvature from hell at that setting is gone
and AF works at all distances now - a big upgrade for me.

Wow, that is great. I am very interested in this lens. I'm not sure if you can answer any of these:
-The press text talks about improved image quality, though in my experience the V1 lens didn't seem to have major sharpness or CA issues. Can't recall for distortion or vignetting. Any sense of whether this is an improvement and by what metrics?

Do you think the Tamron 70-180 G2 will be significantly better than the G1 for indoor sports such as volleyball on the a6600? Wondering about things such as AF speed, tracking ability and in focus % in bursts? Debating on a G1 used vs G2 when it comes out this fall for my daughter's volleyball games which are played in an indoor gymnasium.

Vignetting is more or less the same and I don't see major sharpness differences. CA correction might be improved a bit.
Rendering looks fine to me, but that was already the case for the MK I.
It is not like the 28-75mm 2.8 where I think there is a significant difference between MK I and II.

This is not my area of expertise as I don't usually shoot sports.
I did take pictures of canoes today, but I don't think that poses a challenge to the AF system.

According to Stefan Malloch (Youtuber based in Canada), it has been officially announced and pre-orders should start soon.
Stefan did release a quick review and test video :
Stefan is really impressed by image quality, image stablization and AF (which was already good with V1 and VXD motor) and stated that it looks like price will be $1199 USD or so (TBC).
Beyond the most factual changes (buttons, image stabilisation, close-up distance...), not easy to assess the actual improvements vs v1 with this quick test video but Stefan said that he would put some comparisons videos (including - if my understanding is correct - other 70-200 zooms).
Personally, I am really curious about this lens but I will wait at least for Sigma 70-200 f2.8 zoom release (could be on Oct 6) and reviews before making any purchase decision (as I am looking for a light 70-200 zoom and, so far, I do hesitate between the Sony G (not really interested by f2.8 aperture but mainly by weight, footprint and image quality of course) and this 70-180 V2.

Spent a lot of time with the lens on the weekend.
In terms of optical performance I don't think much has changed.
Which is good, because there was hardly anything to complain about with the first one.
There are some minor differences, new one has more distortion at 70mm but performs better
at 135mm than the old one. Maximum magnification is slightly worse at the 70mm end (1:2.6 instad of 1:2.0) but performance at close distances is generally better.
We should also keep in mind we are dealing with zoom lenses that generally show higher variation than the best prime lenses and both lenses are so good performers that the differences caused by sample variation may be bigger than those between the MK I and MK II samples I had.
I was told official world wide release is on Sept. 14th, which is when my review will go live (as said before: not allowed to publish it earlier).

That early summary makes the G1 used for around $700 sound like a solid option if OIS is not a big factor for someone.

I hated the handling of G1 due to the lack of any controls on the lens, for me it would definitely be G2.
But if you don't care about that: yeah, G1 can be a good deal.

I have shot the G1 for a while. Phenomenal lens, especially at used prices I see. I've never wished for OIS or lens controls, but they're nice improvements for some I suppose. The 70mm macro on the G1 has a weird look due to the field curvature, so I never used it but never really felt limited by the normal non-manual minimum focus either (not much of a macro guy, I guess).
I do occasionally feel limited by 180mm though and am considering an upgrade to the 70-200GMII for TC use. I'd probably sell the Tamron at that point, though I might miss it for travel.

I will likely get the Tamron G2 since the GM II is more than I want to spend (I shoot for money, so budget). I don't shoot wildlife or anything too far away at all, so 180mm max with no TC should be fine 99% of the time.
I have a Tamron 28-75 G2... I think the pair would go together nicely. But might also wait for the rumored Sigma 2.8 to compare.

The Sigma is rumored to be announced at around the same time this Tamron will launch so hopefully there's good comparisons available before you make a choice.

I do see some optical improvements over the G1 version; which are very welcome.
Flare resistance seems worse somehow though? and colors looks warmer? more yellow-ish compared to the blue-ish G1?

To me, better autofocus tracking would be the biggest factor in deciding between the G1 and G2. I hope someone is able to put together a test soon along the lines of what Tony & Chelsea did with the old Tamron and the two versions of the Sony 70-200:

If the new Tamron had closer to the 80% keeper rate of the Sony 70-200 f2.8 II, I would be sold. In Stefan's video he says "its tracking has been improved over the original version," but I would still like to see someone do an objective test of that.

Some comparisons with other lenses:
Is it just me, or does it look like the Sony GMII has way better color and contrast than the other three lenses? He did say the images are from different cameras and different times, but I found that distracting.
The new Tamron does show slightly better sharpness than the G1, so I guess that's all we can tell from those images given the lack of consistency in the other variables.
