The Petz lens is a bit longer at 57mm, and it's a variation of the famous Petzval design, and this is noticeable in its performance and rendering. It gives a similar look to the Panchro lens when compared side by side, but it's incredibly compact and lightweight. The Panchro is crisper at the edges, although this might not be a big concern for you when using these lenses.
I have the historic version, and I got it in Tokyo. The vario is neat because it allows you to change the coma "look," but in my opinion, the lens has a beautiful character as it is in the historic version. It's very easy to adjust the lens for the rangefinder in case it's not aligned perfectly....Show more →
Thank you for these informations! It’s quite useful, it confirms what I thought I saw. I didn’t think I cared for the Petzval until a few sample photos taken with it began to pop up here from you and Juha, It seems to have indeed a beautiful character.

This morning, I took these photos under harsh light while testing out the autofocus adapter. I used the MS 57/2 Petz lens on the A9 camera with the TechArt EA9 AF. It performed really well, achieving focus in tracking mode all the way to the corners of the frame.
The Petz is sharp at the center just like the Leica 50/2 Rigid and has low color error. (lateral and axial)

The ‘flaws’ of this lens really makes the pics more interesting.
Reminds me of my Lomo Minitar 32 in that respect, and why I like using that lens.
I'm much happier with this lens after I was able to fine-tune its focus to match my RF camera. When I tested it with sample photos, it was consistently focusing in front of the intended subject. Now, after making adjustments, it's performing as expected. The lens also produces a flare effect similar to that of the 35mm f/1.4 lux lens.

Today I really wanted to go out w a film M and the Minitar 32. The light was perfect for that - just rained and now everything was bright and super saturated.
Instead I took my F6 and Sigma Art 50 because I hadn't used it in a while. I gotta say - the pics better be good because it was a miserable experience! Just so big n heavy. Oh and the F6 jammed rewinding 1 roll of film. Never happened before, really bizarre. I had to clear it by opening the back, exposing a few shots (thankfully at the beginning of the strip).
Lesson learned - take the Leica w the funky lens if that is what you really want to use! I woulda had a blast w that MS Optics 36 you used in the pics above.

This lens is fun to use, possibly due to its lightweight metal design, weighing in at just 60 grams. It shares a similar compact size with the CV 40/2.8 Heliar. In terms of image rendering, it closely resembles the Leica 35/1.4 Lux lens but with even more accentuated glow and lower contrast wide open. What's great about it is that you have the ability to fine-tune the level of aberration by slightly narrowing the aperture. Yes, you lose some light but even when you reduce the aperture size, the shape of the aperture remains perfectly circular! So, if I want to enhance contrast and sharpness with slightly less aberration in the images, adjusting it to f/1.7 proves to be a good idea depending on the look you want.
I did some PP with Veres Deni Alex' Sony Film Simulation recipes (including colors & curves but removed grain and put sharpening back to default) in C1 Pro on these (exif model changed to A74).
I used CV close focus adapter II with the Perar as it focuses only to 0.8m natively but I think it's nice for close distance shots utilizing the helicoid adapter and it benefits from slightly thinner adapter than my Rayqual for infinity shots. Corner-to-corner sharpness is not great with that lens for infinity shots but it can produce nice results otherwise.
I repurchased Aporis a couple of days ago from old stock that has remained in one of the Tokyo camera shops. I briefly had the lens back in 2017 but it had some issues with reaching infinity. This 2nd copy doesn't have such issues. It's a very quirky lens but I'm having fun shooting with it.
I'm quite happy with the lens. Only thing is that it has some hard vignetting at infinity at the extreme corners but I can live with that. Lots of glow and interesting effects at wide open, and it goes away pretty fast if the lens is stopped down even a little. Today I shot mostly at f1.2 and f8, just a couple of shots at in-between apertures.

Miyazaki-san has had a proliferation of speedy 50-55's but never understood what differentiates them from each other. They're all glowy until ƒ/2.8. That's all I'm ever able to glean from the descriptions.

Thanks for all those.
I was curious about the Elnomaxim, it’s great to have some samples. It looks like a hard beast to tame, the look despite being a Sonnar is not far from the Heliar but under steroids. I wonder if it cleans up a bit between 1.2 and 1.4.
These lenses that give a hard time can produce such keepers sometimes, it’s worth the hassle.
How do you like that one in general or compared to a Sonnetar or Heliar? The 1.2 might be a nice feature in some cases.

The Elnomaxim is pretty glowy wide open. The character is reminiscent of the Apollon 35mm but even more accentuated to my eyes. The coma is wild like the Leica Thambar.

I put together some aperture series with the Elnomaxim to show how the glow cleans up from f1.2 to f1.4 to f1.7 to f2.0. There is a big jump already from f1.2 to f1.4, and then another noticeable jump from f1.4 to f1.7. f1.7 and f2.0 are quite similar to each other. Only f1.2 is super-glowy.
I tried to keep the framing as similar as possible but I was shooting handheld and between every shot I had to adjust aperture and also set the focus again because the focus moves quite easily when aperture is adjusted and my shooting position could have changed a little bit between shots. I think these show the differences in glow between those apertures quite clearly in any case.
When comparing Elnomaxim to Sonnetar 50/1.3 (I've never tried the 50/1.1) and Heliar classic 50/1.5, I think overall Sonnetar 50/1.3 is the sharpest at focused position right from wide open and it's never so glowy, but with that lens the image breaks more towards the edges and corners even stopped down to f8 so for infinity shots that benefit from more consistent corner-to-corner sharpness Elnomaxim would be better. Heliar also works quite nicely for infinity shots stopped down. For low light city shooting wide open Sonnetar has different type of halos around bright lights and I haven't really used it much for that type of shooting, whereas Heliar works nicely for that too.
Heliar is quite glowy wide open but less so at close distances and more at longer distances. With Elnomaxim the wide open glow is pretty consistent regardless of distance and image is fairly soft wide open at all distances.
I haven't used the Elnomaxim enough yet to have a clear idea about how I like it in the long run but I think it has some unique qualities and I'm enjoying it so far

Thanks Fred! Yes, I also think the wide open glow and low contrast there is reminiscent of Apollon but with Apollon the wide open image is sharper at closest distances and glowier and softer at longer focusing distances, whereas Elnomaxim is pretty consistent with the glow and softness wide open regardless of distance. Stopping it down to f1.4 already cleans up things considerably and by f1.7 the glow is basically gone as shown in the aperture series I posted above. I'm still learning how to use Elnomaxim but I'm having good time shooting with it. My copy has hard infinity calibrated perfectly with my Rayqual aperture which makes it enjoyable to use also for infinity shots.

My family is a big fan of your work. They love your images because it takes them back to Tokyo!
Thanks for all these! That 36/1.3 looks always so good, they should mass produce it or make a dozen more. It seems to show more glow then a voigtlander classic 35mm 1.4 and a bit of something more organic. Do you feel it’s a big improvement to the Ms-Optics 35/1.3 that you own?
