This is a subjective, words only review. Still enjoyable and I agree with most of what he's saying...

Some shots with my Zf and the little 26mm f/2.8 pancake - the B&W are RAW developments using the Deep Monochrome profile.

This is such a personally perplexing camera to me. I had it on pre-order and got it when released, didn't like it (as detailed in this thread) and returned it. However I've handled it twice since then and it seems to get better, and I like the B&W output from it. I wonder if the time crunch of the return window was skewing me. Maybe a used one will be in my future in a year or two, who knows??

I will never "get" Hugh or his following. Guy can't finish a thought and his "photography" is disposable. He's got a voice for radio and that's where it starts and ends.

Hugh has had every single Z camera in his hands and didn't know about the DOF preview stopping past 5.6. Again, who watches this?!

Nice work! As with most photographers, your website pales in comparison to your IG stream 😉 Keep doing what you’re doin!

Not a big fan of him myself but the Z's DOF preview beyond f/5.6 doesn't support magnified view so it's not very useful in practice.

Interestingly the Nikon Zfc made the list of top 10 selling cameras in Japan for 2023 at position #7. It was the only Nikon camera to make the list. If you look at what the others were you can see that the Japanese retail store market is significantly different than we here on FM are.

The Zfc appears to be a hit. Congratulations Nikon.

That's actually the Zfc on that list.

The ZF is way too big for Japanese hands

The Z Fc is perfect, though.

From the American Physcological Association : Racism is a form of prejudice that assumes that the members of racial categories have distinctive characteristics and that these differences result in some racial groups being inferior to others.

Personally I've grown very tired of being subjected to ageist, sexist, and racist comments on these boards by certain members.

If only you could read a FULL sentence you'd get to the end part that is the crux of your claim, and, of course, non-present in my post.

Facts about the preferences of people in certain geographic areas are just that, facts. The Japanese have voted OVER and OVER that they prefer considerably smaller cameras than westerners. Part of that is of course physical differences, and part of that is that cameras there tend to be more of a fashion accessory and carried by women for that reason.

Understanding how the market works doesn't make one racist, it makes one informed, and that the Z Fc is both comfortable to use and a solid fashion piece explains the popularity within the Japanese market.

I probably wouldnt use the APA (or AMA for that matter) as a source for anything these days. Ethnic differences in upper limb anthropometry has been proven and does drive demand (or lack of demand) for products in relative areas of the world. Cry harder.

I sincerely hope that your post is not in response to my post on DC. My post was solely about market data from Japanese Retail Sales. Nothing racial in that, just facts.

I have no idea what post you're referring to so, no. The poster it was directed at knew immediately that I was calling him out even though I didn't quote him. That should tell us something right there
Just to be clear, I'm not easily offended. I've been on this planet for 68 years so I've seen pretty much every type of yahoo. However, I don't think it hurts to call out those who are having a difficult time evolving.

Thank God, I would never want to offend anyone in that way.

All good.

I found the 28mm SE on the recent refurbished sale for just under $240 and grabbed it. It's surprisingly sharp and I didn't notice any detrimental field curvature, something I had seen out there in some reviews. Pairs nicely with the 40mm especially the ability to share filters, but I now need those Sigma I-Series to come to Z Mount as I want a short telephoto with similar styling.

Controls-wise the biggest annoyance beyond what I wrote before is the amount of input it takes to switch from shooting a stationary subject where I can use a low shutter speed to keep the ISO at base vs. to shooting a moving subject. If I'm in aperture priority it would mean a menu dive to change the minimum shutter speed, or switching to manual mode then selecting a single shutter speed from the dial and hoping I have the right ISO setting on to make it all work. Even that might be fine if I didn't have to undo that step by step to get back to shooting a stationary subject. I prefer the Fuji system where I could just move one dial and be ready or the Sony system where I can change the minimum shutter speed setting which is linked to a button, or even the Canon system (or Sony) where you can select a custom mode that has a faster shutter speed dialed in. If anyone has found a quicker way, I'm all ears.

Here is a 28mm sample followed by a recent 40mm shot:

I also (finally) received the leather half case from China. I like it quite a bit, the build is more solid than I expected and it noticeably improves the grip. No real downside that I can see. I currently have it paired with a Peak Design strap whose color I think contrasts the leather nicely. You might say, and you might be right in saying that I should get a matching leather strap, but not sure yet given the cost and the comfort for shooting of the Peak Design.

The half case looked nice! does Peak Design strap come with different color?
