I've been shooting a new-to-me F100 for a month or so now alongside Z6II/7II and I've come to the conclusion that I really don't care what the camera looks like nearly so much as I care how it handles. Zfc handling was compromised to look and feel like an old film camera. My old film camera (F100) has controls that were the logical evolution of what actually works functionally and ergonomically. I'll take form over function.
-1,000,000 points to Nikon for the swivel screen. The ONE thing that the original Df did really well well was be photo-centric and conspicuously ignore video use. Would you design a hybrid still/video camera to look and handle like a Bolex?
+1,000 points to Nikon for modern AF and using their standard battery.
-1,001 points for SD cards, these just need to go away. YMMV
+2,000 points for IBIS...Show more →
Nikon's attitude to the shape of their cameras has been 'confused', the 'modern' shape looks outwardly similar but there are surprising differences and inconsistencies. .
I bought (and still have) an F801, and liked the shape and grip. The camera is otherwise unimpressive, AF is dismal. The next was the F90, looks a similar design philosophy, but is much less comfortable for me with a thicker body and less 'depth' to the grip. Still have that one too and AF is much better. Later the F80 I had, and I think the F100 went back to the thinner body with deeper grip.
I still prefer the FM2n I bought at the same time, and that's the one that gets used occasionally
The first digital I got was D7000, sadly back to fat body shallow grip, as were the full frame ones at the time, but D750 went back again to the thinner body and deeper grip
I like my Xt3, like an FM2 with a small grip, and you can always ADD a grip, can't easily take it away. If the ZF is like that I would be happy. After a (long) lifetime of using both 'traditional' dials etc, on F, F2, F3, FM2, M3 and M6 as well as 'modern' wheels and dials on Nikons, and the Fujis which have both I don't mind which, they both work for me.
What I DO like about the old stuff, and the Fujis is having focus scales and DoF markers, sad that Nikon doesn't have them. Most of my AF primes have DoF tables taped to lens body or the outside of the hood, especially the wide angles, couldn't work without them.
