That's smaller than I thought it would be. Nice. Did I read correctly that Voigtlander claims that this matches the IQ of the Ultron II at the same apertures?

Here is what's mentioned on Cosina's page:

"The latest optical design and aspherical element made the lens with as same optical performance as our ULTRON Vintage Line 28mm F2 Aspherical VM-mount lens, while keeping the maximum aperture at F2.8 for extremely compact styling."

They didn't say they will match performance at all apertures. I would expect the CV 28/2 Ultron II to perform slightly better at f/2.8 and after that, they should perform similarly at any subsequent aperture.

That's sure interesting. According to Cosina, Type I is made of aluminum and Type II is brass (black and silver painted)
If your lens has weighs ~190 grams, it is made of aluminum; alternatively, if it weighs 230 grams, it is composed of brass.
https://www.cosina.co.jp/voigtlander/en/vm-mount/ultron-vintage-line-28mm-f2-aspherical/

I have both hoods. (LH-12 and LH-4N) and they work in other lenses as well.
The LH-12 is super cool but but it blocks the framelines more. However, it seems to blocks light entering the lens at oblique angles more effectively.

I see what you are saying - I will need to weigh it. Bummer Bed Bath n Beyond has gone outta business, that was my source of scales! (i'd just use their store demos while I was in there).
It sure has the density of brass, but my finely tuned densitometer may need recalibration. Curious though, why would they make two out of brass, and the third out of papier mache?

Many preferred the Type I since it matched Cosina's CV 21/3.5 Color-Skopar styling. @BastianK reviewed the Type I and I reviewed Type II (Black). Later on, Cosina released a CV 21/3.5 Color-Skopar with the same Type II styling.

I actually like both styles but prefer the focus tab and aperture ring on the Type II, although the Type I has the advantage of being 42 grams lighter.

Here is how the Type II looks with the LH-12 hood:

I had the LH-12 hood but exchanged it for the round one as I found it blocked too much of the vf for my liking.

Indeed. The LH-4N is more practical.

I have both. The 28 and 35 Ultrons have the LH-12 while the 50 Heliar Collapsible has the LH-4. Since I’m using a finder with the 28, the little piece of the finder it blocks doesn’t interfere with focusing. With the 35, it covers a bit of the lower right corner but not enough to be annoying. The LH-4 on the 50 is a bit strange with the edge of the hood running through the viewfinder. I guess if we didn’t want the hood intruding, we would get an SLR or a mirrorless.

I'm using one of these on both the 28 & 35 Ultron IIs and works great...

Now if they could make a 50mm/2 Ultron II the size of the current 28 and 35 IIs...

Coming back to this from page 4: was there ever a Cosina/Voigtlander 50 Ultron v1? I had a quick look over at Cameraquest and only saw the 50/2.5 Color Skopar and 50/2 Heliar collapsible in that range.

I doubt it would be as short at the 28, but considering how short they made the VM 50/1.5 Nokton II, maybe there's some possibility.

Funny how suddenly there are a lot of small 28s. Even Canon got in the game with an RF 28/2.8 full frame pancake with very interesting aspherical element designs (though they are all PMo - plastic molded). Early adopter results though look very good.

There hasn't been any 50mm Ultron lens released by Cosina, but there were some older ones from the original Voigtländer company. Cosina's only 50mm f2 lens have been the various versions of Heliar classic and of course the APO-Lanthar.

I’m interested in type II. But maybe I should just go for an Elmarit or Summaron. Like with my Ultron II, great lens but they never quite scratch the Leica itch.

I expect this lens to perform spectacularly from f2.8. If it doesn’t then I’ll pass for an Elmarit.

Undecided if I actually need anything besides a 35mm prime for M mount, but this does look rather tempting...

@formula4speed

35mm is nice but 28mm is more useful. 35 can be very frustrating. Being in the middle of nowhere. I shot it exclusively for 2 years but I don’t think I’ll ever own a 35mm again.

Voigtländer made 50mm Ultron and Color-Ultron lenses, f/1.8 & f/2. 50mm Ultrons came in the Prominent, QBM and M42 mounts. The Vitomatic and Vitessa had 50mm f/2 Ultrons. There's also a Ziess 50mm Ultron. Amedeo makes a Prominent Nokton/Ultron to M adapter.

I love 35mm, I struggle to "see" at 28mm even after some long stints with 28mm primes and the Ricoh GRII.

I'm new to shooting a Leica, but I've got a full Sony kit still so not sure if I'm going to build out a kit around the Leica yet.

Looks like another interesting lens from Voigtlander. I’ll be getting one for sure.

I really like decent 2.8 lenses. Can shoot wide open in daylight with no nd filter and are very lightweight. Whilst the 28/2 is great a lighter 2.8 lens is very attractive. A new lens I didn’t know I wanted.

39mm filter is great as well.

Another vote for a 50/2.8 or 50/2 lens with 39mm filter. I’d prefer a color-skopar 2.8 (if that’s what they call 2.8 lenses!) over an ultron 50/2 but really I’d like the 50/2 Heliar re-released with no collapsing….

@tri_fin

If you want a 50f2 then get a Summicron. A used v4/v5 isn’t that much.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried a couple of the Summicron - a vintage one and a newer one - they were both truly excellent lenses but did not perform against the light. For me Voigtlander is quite a lot better in backlit situations compared to Leica.

I have a Summicron-M 50mm V, and while I really like it, there are aspects I don't, that I know Voigtlander will do better.
I'd buy an Ultron / Heliar / Skopar (whatever they decide to call it) 50mm f/2 or f/2.5 even if I own the Summicron.

Voigtlanders can be complete [explicative] against the light, it just depends on the lens. The 35 1.5 for example gets completely washed out across the frame. Flare on the Leica lenses I've used tends to instead have more artistic flare – shapes or arcs of red-orange that can add to the photo. The 50 Cron v5 holds onto contrast very well while at the same time producing these interesting effects.

You are correct, I was too general in my comment. I have found the best lenses against the light are either Voigtlander or Zeiss - Cosina. Specific lenses not all. I have found Leica’s coatings are just not as good against the light. I think that is fair statement. I would also say that Leica has better contrast (micro contrast?). It seems that backlight ability is related to contrast. The better against the light the harsher the contrast?

With regards to the Summicron. It has beautiful rendering with gorgeous contrast but compared to say the Voigtlander apo 50mm it is considerably weaker against the light. By this I mean it produces less flare.

I love tone and generally lenses with nice tones seem to also do badly against the light….

Edit. I have found simple lenses, like Heliar designs, have good tone and handle backlighting well.
