The 28 Ultron is so good and already so small, it's quickly become my most used lens... will be interested in seeing them compared.
I agree! I'm also eager to do a comparison when I review the new lens. The CV 28/2 Ultron II is already an excellent choice for street photography, and I have high expectations that the new lens will surpass it in performance.
This was a surprising announcement. Should pair nicely with the CV 40/2.8. Thanks for posting Juha!

As an owner of the 28 3.5 Color Skopar, I feel the current price is a complete bargain for anyone looking for one. If anything it should be much more. Especially if I decide to sell mine.
Perhaps. They start at $600 on fleabay. I managed to get a NOS 50/2.5 Skopar for $300 while I lived in Baltimore and I am never letting it go.

I paid US $488 for a mint-in-the-box-with-hood 35/2.5 Color-Skopar LTM on eBay earlier this year; all the others I saw for sale had haze so I was willing to pay a bit more for a good one...and this is a good one for now. If the others have haze I imagine this one will develop it eventually; I keep it stopped all the way down when not using it in case the haze comes from oil getting on the aperture blades.

Re: pricing. I wonder how much of it is JPY weakness since the Ultron was released? Looks like the JPY is 30-40% weaker now than then, so the higher JPY MSRP likely reflects that. In theory the 28/2.8 should be in the $600-650 range if doing a straight exchange from the JPY MSRP (but usually the US importer adds a bit of a premium). The Ultron is listed at B&H for $900, but that's about $350 higher than the Ultron's Japan street price...

Type II all the way. Looks very nice, plus regular ergos. I have the 40 in the type 1 style, love it, but woulda got it in the type II style if it was offered.

I will replace my Ultron II with this lens. The Type I
1) because I like brass better and the mount is also black which is nice
2) looks better and the silver rim on the Ultron II has always been an eyesore for me
3) it is very small. It is 13mm shorter than the Ultron II. That means shorter than the Elmarit and just 5mm longer than the Summaron
4) it has the same optical performance as the Ultron II which I already love
5) the focusing tab on the Ultron II wears to white. I know it’s not but makes it look like a plastic tab under the black. It really doesn’t look good when it starts peeling. The new Skopar is brass and the focusing tab (on the type I) is nickel plated which looks really nice ...Show more →
Thanks. When I posted I had only seen links to the Japanese pages, but since then read the English pages and noticed that. It's reassuring that image quality should be on-par with the Ultron. But I'll wait for Fred's side by side test for a more definitive answer, which will also give us an idea about bokeh characteristics, flare resistance, etc.

Ugh, I know haze was a problem with the 35mm f/1.7 Ultron LTM. I didn't know it was also a problem with the Color-Skopar. I hope this isn't a sign that all their lenses will eventually haze up. The haze in the 1.7 Ultron was much worse than oil offgassing - it was a problem in the cement between two of the elements, so even with full disassembly it can't be cleaned or removed.

I'm curious to know if the performance of this lens will be comparable to the CV 28/2 Ultron II. While both lenses feature 1 aspherical element located at the rear element and 2 abnormal partial dispersion elements, the Ultron has the advantage of 2 additional elements (10 elements in total compared to 8 in this lens).
When it comes to optical design, the rear groups of the two lenses are similar, but the Ultron lens has two additional groups. It appears that Cosina only provides MTF graphs for their high-performance APO lenses, and I wish they would release them for all their lenses.
Here are their respective designs for a comparison:
They said “latest optical design” that gives you the same “optical performance” as the 28 Ultron vintage line.
So I expect that to be true since Cosina are lens nerds. I think they’re accurate in their descriptions.
Definitely! I'm really looking forward to seeing if what they said in their marketing turns out to be true. Since I'll be comparing them, we'll know soon enough how they actually compare.

For the 1st edition of 2/28 ultron a mtf graph existed.
It was in a zip file that was possible download from japanese and german website.
When 28 ultron v2 came out, the file disappeared from downloads pages.
Good. Because the Ultron II is a legend. If they managed to take out that silver ring from the front and make it even tinier I’m in!
I agree. It will be difficult for the new f/2.8 lens to catch up, but I think it's possible. The Leica 28/2 Summicron (v2) comes close, but the Ultron performs slightly better. Even when the Summilux is not fully open, it can't match the Ultron's performance in the corners. Imo, it's one of Cosina's finest.
By the way, you mentioned that the focusing tab tends to peel off over time. I haven't experienced this issue with my own lens even after prolonged usage but it's possible that there was a batch problem affecting some units. While the lens itself is made of brass, I believe the focusing tab is constructed from black-painted aluminum, which may reveal the metal underneath with prolonged use. Nevertheless, it can always be repainted, so I'm not overly concerned about it. Although, I do wish it was made of brass to achieve that desirable patina appearance overtime.

Oh man, announced just after I settled on the TTArtisan 28/5.6. I was considering the f-mount color-skopar, but wanted the smaller size. Have a 37mm to 39mm step up ring on order for it hah.
This Voigtlander type II has the better focus tab, close focus, filter size, aperture range, and most likely flare performance.
Still, the TTartisans is simple to use with the 1m to ~5m infinity range
