I get all that
These are all examples of other people being around the equipment, so the chances of anyone walking away with it are slim
And 1bwana1 made the good point that this can be standard practice in industry.
But as a nature photographer, setting up expensive gear and walking away and leaving it in the woods is not something I can see myself doing.

Auto Capture is probably a spill over from the software for the company's robotic systems, investing in deep learning - notably its subsidiary MRMC, which Nikon acquired 7 years ago during its restructuring, but had been working closely with since the 2012 Olympic Games at least

It is 6:21 a.m. and I am running late to an ongoing documentation of a loon sitting on a nest, incubating eggs.
I am getting away from this computer and going to enjoy nature.
That was *my* point in the first place. I prefer being out in nature taking pictures to sitting at a computer.... and that includes debating with people on forums, like many of you here (not all) enjoy doing
Now, critter cams are examples of organizations using remote cams to keep tabs on animals... including loons.
Here is New Hampshires exciting loon cam. By the way, the female deposited the first egg on June 11. 26-29 days incubation period.

I left the water about an hour ago after checking to see if the loons were still incubating. Will now post a couple of images on the D850 thread.

Robert,
Are you not using your Z8 yet?
I have been making some progress learning it but not nearly enough to go into the field with it as a go-to.
I would like a very simplified menu set up.... keyword "Simple". I've been reading all this niggling about auto menus (Sony vs Nikon) .... and I would like Nikon's it to be as simple as Sony's. This guy over here says his is the perfect menu setup. And this guy over here says the same thing and on and on.
Also, with MILC, if the AF squares are red/green and you cannot see the red vs green.......then you cannot shoot the camera.
So, I believe Nikon and I are finally making progress toward a firmware change for Daltonism. I will not know until I see it. And I will not discuss anything regarding the firmware on this thread.

I am holding good thoughts for you on this one!!!!

You should never need to access the menus for day to day shooting once the camera is set up to your liking. I've never understood menu complaints of any brand.

My response to your first sentence is .... Bingo! Key phrase: "Once the camera is set up to your liking." I agree. And I will get there. I seek that simplicity
If you have never understood menu complaints of any brand then you probably have a greater aptitude for it than I do. No problem.
If it is so easy for everyone then why was this thread dedicated for several days to continual haggling over Sony vs Nikon menus?

My D850 is set to AF-ON and the fn1 button is set to Auto Area AF
For BIF I simultaneously press/hold both the AF-ON button and the fn1 button. Even when the rig is put over the gunwale and down just above water-level I am able to press the shutter button.
With this Z8 is it much more difficult to do this when the camera is lowered to the same position.
This leads me to want to assign the Auto Area AF to something simpler.

This whole "auto-capture" thing seems an oddity to me, but it has started me thinking.
What is one leaves behind camera/lens on a tripod at a spot in nature, preferably covered in camo cloth, and backs off about 50 meters until completely out of sight, and connects to the camera with mobile phone to see the viewfinder image on the phone screen, and then have all the camera controls behind icons on the screen.
You could even make yourself comfortable in a tent with coffee and a book and just watch the phone display and wait until wildlife appears. You could use a tablet to have a better view and more real estate for the controls/buttons.
Would this not enable you to photograph animals/birds in situations that are impossible if you are physically there?
An additional advantage would be that you see the burglar approaching that wants to take your 20K combo and take off. It should give you time to shout him off.

Most cameras don't have Wifi/BT range that far away, but sure.

Auto Are AF already *is* my secondary AF mode
Maybe I should have clarified that AF-ON is my primary focus button. If I press/hold the AF-ON bottom alone it focuses the single point. To get BIF I press both AF-ON and fn-1

I understand...I just don't see a reason to need 3 buttons for something as simple as Auto Area.
Backbutton autofocus was more of a holdover of the "focus and recompose" era. Maybe I'm a minority, but I really like my primary focus being on shutter and secondary on AFON instead of the old school way.
