There is the one that chooses their hardware with thought to use not it's saleability when the next "big" thing shows up. They learn how to use it to there ability and advantage. They have their eye on game and that is shooting and improving and enjoying the art and science of photography
Oh, I forgot. They are not quite as driven by ego as some.

....and back to our regularly scheduled program!
I received my copy of a Z8 and have been very pleased with it's performance with both S and F-mount lenses. Wanted to try some of my F-mount glass before buying S equivalents. My 85mm f/1.8G and 105mm f/1.4E did extremely well, so I can replace them at a more leisurely pace, but my 70-200mm f2/8G VR II will be the next purchase. It's good on the Z8, but not compared to the S equivalent comparisons. Add a couple primes and I'll be set for what I need to do.
My D850 is redundant with the Z8 and I want to eventually move to all S lenses, so it's next to go. I'll keep my Z6 as a backup until I see what Nikon comes up with next.

Congratulations on your new camera. It sounds like you have a well thought out, and viable plan for you migration to mirrorless photography.
I hope your Z8 brings you many wonderful years of image making.

I got a first look at the Z8 today in Austin at Precision Camera. Local pro was returning his for replacement due to a 'defective shutter'. Not sure how that works given the lack of mechanical shutter but mentioned it wasn't properly recording 4k video/120fps shooting of any kind.
Definitely could hear that IBIS clunk coming on and off though so it wasn't in silent mode. Body sure looks right sized for most hands though. I couldn't bring to ask myself to put hands on it to feel the difference (it even had a 24-120 mounted) given how frustrated he was.

I've continued to use the Z8, finally have found a few birds flying around for a better comparison with my R5. Overall I continue to really like using the nikon, it is a lot of fun to shoot with, and for me that is important. I like being able to use electronic shutter at various frame rates without having to worry about rolling shutter as I would with my canon. I like the almost silent sound I have selected so I can hear that the camera is taking images without bothering anything else. The screens are fantastic and very responsive. Images are typical nikon, which is a good thing. Noise cleans up well. Regarding af performance, the camera seems a bit faster than my canon, but not tremendously so, and no af system is perfect...but the z8 seems to do well with bif which for me is the ultimate test.

Sharing information.....
reference Multi selector button (MSB)
When using the Z8 MSB my thumb becomes uncomfortable. For me, it is too tight on the left side of the button.
I've never felt that discomfort with my D850 and now that I looked at the MSB on my D850, the MSB is raised considerably and it has a generous amount of room around it.
Relative to the Z9, the Z8 MSB is closer to the ridge that is the frame of the articulating LCD.
In picture below, the Z9 is on the left and the Z8 is on the right......

Nikon's MSB (and many other buttons) are badly designed...they sit fairly flush and are very squishy with little tactile feedback.
I've found that most buttons on the Z8 have slightly less tactile feedback (the "click" on press) than the Z9 did as well. I sat with both in my hand for an hour, swapping back and forth with eyes closed at one point when deciding which to keep.
It is what it is. If they couldn't get it right on their flagships, the lower end bodies never stood a chance
Many things about DSLR bodies were just better engineered.

Well said. Thank you for your knowledgeable response. Yes, it is what it is.

All that said, Fuji buttons are an order of magnitude worse, even up to the GFX 100S body. Simply embarrassing to have such a high end camera have such a terrible physical interface. It can always be worse!
