Hooked-up Leica Boutique customers are picking up and/or preordering their Q3s tomorrow. The rest of us Plebs can wonder for now. I'm still on the fence about keeping my Q2 or moving to the Q3. I guess I'll sleep on it.

Yepp, Q3 is available starting tomorrow.

I've owned the Q, Q2 and Q2M, I love the form-factor, colors, the design but my problem is really with the 28mm lens, which it doesn't surprise me is even a tad wider in reality. It is great for street, architecture, travel, etc but when you get to close to people, it is not really flattering. It doesn't matter if you crop it to 35mm equivalent - it still distorts like a 28mm lens or wider.

I have the best judge in the world - my wife says she doesn't like photos of her taken with the Leica Q-family :-)

The unflattering appearance in portraits is determined by the distance from the subject. By using a 35mm crop, you can maintain a slightly greater distance, while a 50 or 75mm crop allows you to stay even further away while maintaining the same composition, resulting in less distortion on faces. It's also possible to achieve no distortion at 28mm, but that would require creating some distance between you and the subject. This approach may not be suitable for close-up portraits, but it works well for full body or environmental portraits.

Yes, the new cameras will be on display at Leica boutiques tomorrow afternoon.

I know how to work around the 28mm, but I would have preferred to have a 35, 40 or 50 mm option as well.

I'm basically torn, I enjoy the 28mm when I'm on travel, especially in European cities, you have less space to back up and you still get a bit of context. I don't mind backing up a bit when shooting people in general or in groups, but sometimes you want to be able to see the facial expression of e.g. wife or daughter, then being to close equals less flatting. I yeah know, 1st world problem... And I can always grab my Sony A7R5 + 50GM for those shots. But still...

I'll swing by the Leica store in DC tomorrow to take it for a spin.

But for people who like shooting 28mm and RX1R2's 35mm, there is no AF lens on Z mount that is of similar size and quality.

Besides, Z8 body alone is 910g and much taller than RX1 and Q, so despite technical excellence the Z8 will not inspire me to take it out of the house. I think Z8 is a perfect camera for the working pros though, it's so versatile that it can do almost everything.

I have the RX1R2, and everytime I look at its files with corner to corner sharpness, I wonder why I bother with Q1 or Q2, despite owning the Q1 before.

But then Q3 changes things a little, now we have 60MP in 28mm, ~38MP in 35mm, so it's almost like having RX1R2 and Q2 two-in-one.

I need a camera now though, so the real question is, should I buy the Q3 without knowing how good its 35mm crop mode is when compared to RX1R2?

Can anyone here with the RX1R2 who is also picking up a Q3 tomorrow do this comparison?

I thought the Q's were ridiculous, then one day I was walking around Vegas and Leica had a tiny booth outside the shopping corridor at the Linq with a sign offering free go with a selection of Leica's. A salesperson from the Leica store and a model they hired walked around with me as I shot. I described my experience here:

I would encourage you to go straight for the Q3 for the 60mp BSI sensor if the image quality and color is anything like the M11.

Up to now you only get framelines with no option to fill the screen. Q3 could have added that since many asked for it. Watch the early reviews to see if it’s mentioned.
