Leicarumors.com posted the first leaked image and specifications of the forthcoming Leica Q3 camera.

Leica Q3 camera specifications:

Leica is expected to announce the Q3 in the last week of May

Improved focus illumination mechanism

Contactless charging system (similar to how an electric toothbrush is charged)

New finish

Same 60MP sensor and image processor as the Leica M11

Same body, lens, and image stabilization as the Leica Q2

Code name “Wilson”

Higher price than the Q2 (currently $5,795)

Tilt screen

Higher MP EVF

Internal memory

USB C charging

8k video (I have been going back and forth on this one, still not 100%)

Phase detect AF

New handgrip with wireless charging

Shutter button with a traditional cable release

So the same...

I get a new high MP sensor, new processor for improved AF, etc but I would really have loved for them to stay in the 40-45 MP range and added an option for a f/1.7 35, 40 or 50 mm lens.

Compare the M11 output with that from the Q2. The Q3 will have the M11 sensor (supposedly). Processor? Who knows.

Something like a 40 or 50mm with AF improvements wouldve been hard to say no to. Maybe tilt screen. MP i doubt you'd have to increase over 47.3

I like the 28mm paired with a high resolution sensor. I don’t mind cropping to get to 35 or 50 equivalent. Those are my three favorite focal lengths, so it’s ideal for a versatile fixed lens camera. Much as I love other fixed lens cameras, I hardly ever stick with them for long. I had a Q2 for a while and I’ve been shooting a Q2M some lately, and really enjoy the concept of this camera.

So stick that M11 sensor in the Q3 and I think it’ll be a huge hit. That said, I am sure there’ll be a 20% price increase to dampen the enthusiasm.

Maybe silly, but my biggest peeve with this camera is still one that could easily be fixed in firmware. Just like the old Sony bodies, the AF box color can’t be changed and is impossible for me to see on the LCD screen.

I have used the digital zoom feature on my M11. I have to programed to the top button by the shutter. It is usefull with the high resolution sensor. Plus on the M11 I can choose the starting focal length that best suits the subject matter.

Yeah it’s fine in the EVF. It’s even worse on the monochrome camera, where just setting it to any color would be a massive help.

The M11 + 35 FLE and 50 APSH is more my ultimate EDC style than the Q. *I picked up "EDC" from YouTubers that seem to be using this term lately, Every-Day-Carry

Anyway, I think the Q3 with M11/A7rIV sensor and Panasonic's PDAF/CDAF-DFD auto focus technology is going to result in yet another wave of Leica Q record-breaking sales. I do hope Leica has figured out and is prepared to meet the initial sales demand much sooner than what we see from Leica traditionally. I don't think it can get more practical than a Q3 with these specs which also seems to have given the 28mm FL much more life and notoriety than I think it would otherwise.

My personal strong interest in the Q3 is that I consider the Q3 an SL3 harbinger, but I am positive the Q3 will not only more than do-it-again sales wise, as an almost irresistible EDC or Second-Carry solution too. And who doesn't want a chance to own at the red dot at least once their lifetime 😎

The external circumference of the lens of the Q3 looks larger than the Q2 (comes up higher) in the comparison photos, so perhaps they tweaked it a bit. But it's still very likely to require on software correction.

That's the trade off: optically ignore distortion so other characteristics can be more highly corrected while keeping the size relatively small.

If you've ever looked at the uncorrected Q photos, you can see that any vignetting there is is cropped out by the distortion correction, so there is nothing swirly or retro about the final rendering.

The Q/Q2 distortion correction itself doesn't bother me – IQ is extremely good except for the farthest corners (the one thing I hope they have tweaked for the Q3), and the end result is a bit like a corrected image taken with an anamorphic lens, imparting a 3d quality to close distance images at wide apertures.

Additional images of the new Leica Q3 have surfaced, revealing that its LCD screen is tiltable. However, the screen protrudes noticeably more than the flush LCD of the Leica Q2. There is a wireless charging at the bottom.

It seems like the Leica Q3 has a different LCD tilt design compared to the Fuji X-Pro3. The Leica is kinda similar to the old Sony bodies like A7RIII and earlier bodies, except that the LCD monitor itself seems thicker.

I am curious if there have been any modifications made to the optical design of the lens.

Be cool if they removed the macro mode and just made it a close focus design. That switch is extremely annoying in practice!! Maybe the af design forces them to do this but wishful thinking.

I haven't had the chance to try out a Leica Q, so I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the macro switch. Based on the pictures they've released, it looks like the new lens is pretty much the same as the old one.

The Q3's electronic viewfinder (EVF) might be upgraded to 5.6 million dots, which could make a real difference. In my opinion, one of the major improvements is the switch from only contrast detect autofocus to using both contrast and phase detect autofocus.
