Unfortunately the upgrade part was intentional . I didn't intend to do any test shots regarding eyeAF accuracy, I just noticed it when taking casual pictures after the upgrade...

Thanks, Joshua. You are of course right in what you're saying. I'm not expecting absolute 100% hit rate either. The only reason I mention this in this thread is that my impression is, that on 1.30 eyeAF was more resilient to such distractions. As I mentioned, I tested this scenario on 1.30 as I wanted to see what:
actually means in practice and noticed an improvement. Then on my first casual shots after 1.31 update, I noticed eyeAF seemed to regress to its previous state but I didn't think much of it at that time. I don't know if there's a specifc size of eye which makes eyeAF work more reliably, but I think it's mostly about the contrasty objects near the eyeAF frame. Anyways, if I could directly test 1.30 against 1.31, I would ....Show more →
I've emailed Sony Central Service (UK) about the inconsistencies I'm seeing with 1.31 and asked if there is an update coming to address this so let's see what they say, just hoping they don't ask me to send the a1 in.
To folks that updated their A1 to the latest FW, which is 1.3.1, does your camera display the FW as 1.3.1 or 1.30? I checked the date when I updated mine. It was on Oct 23 and the FW 1.3.1 came out on Sept 29. I checked the FW on my A1 again and it says 1.30 and according to Sony's website, that an update of cameras on 1.30 to the 1.3.1 is available and recommended. But again, the FW I downloaded on Oct 23 is labeled as 1.3.1 although my camera still shows the FW on it is 1.30. Not that it matters to the reported issue and just out of curiosity... Thanks!
possible you didn’t really update yours, hence didn’t experience any degradation? Or that you only updated the a1 that you sold

Thanks Joshua.
I just checked mine.
The Firmware in my A1 displays as: Ver. 1.31 (sic), not as 1.3.1.

Thang, I updated both of them, I am pretty sure but anything beyond a week starts to become blurry now. Well, at my age, it can and does happen more often and it doesn't surprise me.
But kidding aside, does yours display 1.30 or 1.31 as the FW though?

Mine says version 1.31. Is it possible your update didn't complete for some reason and you didn't notice?

I am not sure why mine still displays 1.30. The only FW I downloaded and updated mine with is from that day and I checked the label it says 1.31. I always make sure that the message that the update was completed successfully is displayed. Thank you for looking yours up.
Joshua I am still on 1.1. At the time didn’t think new fw releases since worth the hassles

Mine displays as FW1.31, I wish it displayed FW1.20
Had an interesting morning yesterday, I met up with a friend that’s been having problems with his A1 200-600 with fw1.31 but much more severe than mine. When I tried it the most obviously problem was occasionally the camera refused to focus at all at distances over 50ft . No green boxes at all it was like manual focus . I checked the cameras contact pins which was all in alignment no dodgy spring terminals , no oxidation etc on the lenses contacts . I took battery out and put back in , the camera worked for a while then it started refusing focus at longer distances again . I then tried full initialise , did timezone date reloaded settings from SD card . That seemed to have cured the focus issue at longer distances . So far it’s been ok no disappearing green boxes .
I tried it with the birds with eye priority in AF on , it’s now same as mine showing detecting heads and eyes of birds in flight but still many shots are slightly OOF making them look overly soft .

Had that occasionally happen to me quite a while back. For me removing the battery didn't help. What reliably helped (for a while anyway) was swapping to a different lens (and back). It seemed to be gone after a firmware update, but I can't be sure as it was rare and I mostly moved on the 600GM, which never showed this behavior. My theory is that somehow the camera thinks that the AF distance limiter is enabled even though the switch is set to disabled.
Just to update I've sent raw files comparing 1.20 and 1.31, specifically where I shoot dippers, to Sony SCS for comparison, detailing how I've found 1.31 more erratic, less sticky, somewtimes front focusing a touch while also pointing out the AF's ability to BEAF on a bit of wing (for example) thinking it's an eye (which pre-dates 1.31).
Oddly enough (sod's law more like) everything's been behaving well since contacting Sony about this and may get a slice of humble pie back from them but I still have misgivings about 1.31.
Not sure this is a good indicator for the a1. The a7R V was released so recently, I'm not sure you'd expect a slew of changes. IF there is a big a1 update coming, it may take longer, as I imagine regression testing would take longer.

Judging from the “2.0” firmware update for the A7RV which was just annnounced, I have lost my last hope for a substantial update for the A1.
I hope you are right. What I meant was that if they called this “2.0”, it’s maybe a sign of what “our 2.0” will be, if it ever comes.
2.0, 3.0 etc was used for something big in the past.

Unless Sony is only interested in Content Creators going forward, I believe a major A1 update is still coming in the near future. It's too early in the cycle for an A1ll IMO.
