RUMOR: A1 to get A7RV AF in firmware update? Seems this rumor says firmware is coming in February. I know his history with rumors but let’s hope there’s some truth to this one.
The source says "new firmware will come to the Alpha1 in February, include video-af to a7r5."
That doesn't necessarily say the A1 will get the same AF as the A7RV. I actually don't really know what the hell that says (which is par for the course with SAR).
Won't hold my breath, but it would be nice to get a major firmware update for the A1 (the owners deserve it).
Hopefully it'll be a 2.0 release that brings some meaningful new features rather than just bug fixes and improvements to existing features. Version 2 firmware just in time for the two-year anniversary of the camera?
Oh good, another opportunity to temporarily ham-string the security features of my Mac.
If the firmware comes with a new feature allowing future upgrades via SD card then I'll be happy.
There are a lot of things that should be added to the A1 via FW that A74 and A7R5 have....but A7R5 AF (for stills) is certainly not going to be one of them. I'm sure that requires the new dedicated AF processor.
Still lots of other nice upgrades could be had like FW updates from memory cards, DMF activation in camera for all lenses, BEAF in video etc.
That is a poorly written SAR post...I don't understand the part about A7R5....reads like A7R5 is getting a video AF update but probably meant the A1 is getting some A7R5 video AF features (maybe Animal Eye AF?).

This is how you write when English is not your first language, Italian is. Compounded by the fact that your Italian writing is about as accurate as your hair combing....
I think it will come because the amount of negative press that Sony has received, even from ambassadors, YT reviewers, etc, about the A1 missing key features available via FW update compared to the A74 and A7R5 isn't sitting well. It is an easy and cost-effective "problem area" to fix, compared to other critiques against Sony camera, which would require body redesign or huge R&D investments (like adjusting the color science, or sensor read-out speeds, etc)
In the same vein, Canon will eventually allow for 3rd party lenses to the RF mount. They will hold out as long as they can to milk profits out of the market, but 3rd party support will come.
I really hope this rumor is true. And a major firmware update is forthcoming. Although, I’m not holding my breath.
I realize Sony is under no obligation to provide us with firmware updates. But seeing how long product cycles are for flagship bodies. It’s a little disheartening to see my A1’s outclassed in many respects by less expensive bodies.
I know some of the latest AF features are hardware related. And probably can’t be added to the A1 via firmware. But I believe many of the latest features can. I really hope Sony will give us these features.
There's really a lot stuff purely software-based that they could migrate to A1:
* video animal eyeAF
* focus breathing compensation (video)
* focus bracketing
* variable ss auto-detect
* ability to switch eyeAF af subjects via joystick
* instant M1/2/3 switching
* first page "home" menu
* fulltime DMF
* ...
Not to mention some new stuff, like better manual focusing aids...
