Which would you say has the better bird detection today, z9 or A1? Isn’t it nice that when Sony releases a camera it has the full features already in it which takes the Canikon years of FW releases just to catch up to Sony. Wouldn’t it be better the Z9 came out with these added abilities right out of the gate rather than having to wait year(s) for the ability to be added via FW.

It's too early to tell if Z9 leapfrogged A1 in bif, but the initial reports are stating a visible improvement in bird recognition and tracking over changing background...
Sure, Z9 was released with some missing features, notable variable shutter I'd say but it also now has features A1 doesn't, like pro-capture or 8k60p... At the same time, I still can't enable breathing compensation or use improved bulb timer. So, the devil (as always) is in the details...
And that to me is simply not how a piece of electronics, which cameras are nowadays, should be managed throughout its lifecycle (especially the "flagship")...

Sounds reasonable. For folks who say you got what you were sold to when you bought the camera, don't expect more, I will say this, when/if Sony comes out with few features for the A1 via FW update, you do not need to update your A1 to have these new features, just let us whiners have them.

That's the thing, an A9 iii with over 33MP (rumor says 44), fast read-out speed sensor, AI proc, and A7R5-style screen, etc would kill A1 sales. Nikon Z8 has delivered that at sub $4,000 - so Canon and Sony now can't overprice their next gen cameras. Great time to be a photographer :-)

Heck, if they delivered that I would easily give up my A7RV - I don't really need 61MP and would preferred more speed.

The A9iii is the camera everyone wants, but Sony cannot really deliver

A 44MP A9iii sounds a bit odd since the A1 is only 50MP and will probably continue to cost several thousand more than the A9's price bracket. I'd not be surprised if the A9iii remains at 24MP considering what I assume is its target market -- the same market as Canon's R3.

I've also no idea where this idea of a 33MP A9iii came from. Why 33MP? Is is based on some specific sensor development that's been publicized or leaked, or is it just a number plucked out of thin air by wishful thinkers?!

IMO Canon and Sony can and probably will "overprice" their next cameras because by all accounts they're still selling plenty of the current models at current prices, which I assume you consider overpriced. Maybe the Z8 will change the paradigm, but based on the fact that the D850 didn't really change the dSLR pricing paradigm I won't be holding my breath.

Definitely hasn't leapfrogged anything other than the Z8

Jury is still out on how accurate the focus is but the tracking in Auto Area (full frame) is very nice to use now. Any Canon/Sony user will feel right at home. It just works and I never encountered any jumping to the background. I posted some examples of swallows and terns at some distance and it still lost the tern near the water - my A9 doesn't do that. My A9/A1 might loose then if they go under the water for a time (like a gannet). But I never had the same issue in good light - the Z9 seemed to stay with the terns then. I have yet to check if the images were all in focus though.

In that new bird mode it gets pretty confused by any grass or twigs in front of the bird. Even though it shows the bird eye detect box most of my images were focussed on the grass or twigs just in front of the bird. Still if that's the price to pay for very fast acquisition and tracking in Full Frame mode I'll take it.

In order to leap frog the A1 it will need 50mp, 30FPS RAW and a 9mp EVF with 240p refresh rate and iso on the rear dial. That ain't going to happen any time soon. Oh and a tack sharp 600mm zoom will be required.

Yes, I meant only the detection and tracking part. I think hardware-wise A1 and Z9 are pretty similar, so it comes down to the software part which contains the algorithms and models for recognition (be it AI/ML or whatever else ). Since Nikon is continuously working on the software part, contrary to Sony, I do expect that Nikon can get ahead somewhen in the future...
