To me, looking at draws, it looks like more a original "Ultron" derivative design, an asymetrical evolution of "planar", for the positive and negative elements arrangment out the aperture.
Usually is the positive and negative elements arrangment, that is formerly used to define Duble Gauss derivative and Sonnar/Ernostar derivatives.
Than if it end on a rendering with low CA with some spherical aberration and COMA wide open, it could be a nice rendering portrait lenses, especially if focal plane is kept relatively straight. The S.C. version for less contrast can be a suggestion for this thesis.
I think for Cosina Ultron designates an aperture (f/1.7-2.0) and not a lens design. So, with ultron I don't think there is any design of which to be a derivative. Look at the 21 ultron for an example of design that is clearly not derived from a Planar (or a Sonnar) in any way.
You are right, it clearly isn't a classic Sonnar design and I think we can agree on that. Without talking to the lens designer, however, I don't think we can know how they got to this specific design. My point was simply that with 3 of 7 elements being APD and no aspherical elements they are probably going for low CA (hence the APD elements) and only somewhat lowered and not especially low SA. That is consistent with how Cosina describes the lens. "Three out of 7 elements in 5 group use atypical partial dispersion glass to ensure high image quality, and no aspherical lenses are used to optimize the balance between bokeh and resolution by retaining a moderate amount of spherical aberration." I don't know about coma correction, but I don't expect it to have a particularly sharp and contrasty rendering wide open--not when they purposely left some SA uncorrected--but I do expect it to be reasonably sharp. I also expect very nice bokeh.

I think Cosina have a random lens generator…
The name and exterior styling seem to change for no reason and follow no logical pattern. It used to bother me now I find entertaining - embrace the madness.
Will it glow or won’t it? I was hoping that as there is a S.C. version that we might get some glow? I was thinking about this 75/1.9 SC & a 35/1.4 SC…

The voigtlaender/zeiss Ultron 50/1.8 is an example, lens make from ‘50.
And it was made with low dispersion elements
Zeiss owned Voigtlaender that year so made Ultron lenses with his brand.
This thing about all design and name is a curiosity, then i think naming this lens Ultron is not accidental.
New lenses inspired by old design, are my favourites Cosina products under Voigtlaender brand.

I was thinking about the image quality and was hoping for high resolution and improved contrast for a more visually appealing and modern look. And if they took care of chromatic aberrations, it would probably be referred to as APO-Lanthar but I think it would be larger and way more expensive.
It's possible, but I don't know that it will hold contrast at wide apertures regardless of focus distance like the Cron 75. My guess is the performance wide open will be closer to the sweet dreaminess of the '76 redesigned Cron 50, with the across the frame performance catching up with the Cron (and Nokton) 75 stopped down.

My 35/2 Ultron gave nice character on the M10R. 75/1.5 works well on the M11, but agree it's size is strange and the hood-nope.
But why should I consider the 75/1.9 SC even though I shoot wide open as much as possible?
p.8 #6 · Cosina to release Voigtlander 75mm f/1.9 VM
I am considering the SC version as I shoot black and white. SC is said to have less contrast and saturation which leads to a better range of greys, a richer tonal range.
SC is often said flare more than MC and I understand MC was developed for that. I would say that modern SC is pretty much the same as modern MC with regards to flare. At least that is what I understand from the VC 35 1.4 lens which has S.C. and M.C. versions.

I've noticed that the differences between Cosina's MC and SC lenses are quite subtle. The MC version tends to deliver a more consistent result with bolder, more vivid colors due to its higher contrast when shooting in bright light. On the other hand, the SC version can produce a softer, more muted effect with lower contrast, especially when shooting into the light. This is due to a more accentuated veiling flare. Of course, the overall draw between the two versions remains unchanged.

I wish I had a good comparison between the two for this lens. 75mm is a lot more people- and portrait-focused, and I’d personally welcome a rendering with softer tonality and slightly more muted contrast. However I’m not looking for any film-era lens flare, distasteful ghosting or extreme veiling.

I decided to pick up this lens finally (as a birthday present for myself)
I went for the MC version as that's generally my preference. SC version is also out of stock in most Tokyo stores while MC is still available at least at Map Camera.
Most of the close range shots were taken wide open at f1.9, and most of the far-away shots were taken at f5.6 utilizing hard infinity (which is spot-on with this lens using my Rayqual adapter).
I exported them through C1 Pro 23 and applied my favorite preset on most of them, but a handful were exported straight without any modifications (just default settings for A7C + all noise reduction turned off) since I preferred the colors that way for some of the close-up plant shots.
So far I'm very happy with the lens and having 0.5m MFD is very welcome.

Happy Birthday mate!
Yet again our man in Japan delivers the goods.
You’ve made my day with those photos and I am sure a few others. As always there are some lovely photos in there.
I will be really interested to hear from others on how the lens performs. I am useless at that kind of thing, if I like the photo, I get excited and think it’s a good lens…

Thanks very much! I got a permission to buy it outside of my usual hobby budget since it was my birthday so I jumped at the chance
I'm also not so good at technical IQ analysis, I just shoot a lot and if the results look nice to me I'm happy with the lens. So far I'm very pleased with this one.
It came with two lens caps, a plastic one and a light metal hood cap that's a bit different from the traditional CV hood caps.

Happy birthday, Juha! And thank you for posting the lovely samples.
Map won't sell the MC copy they have in stock overseas, so I'm waiting for it to hit our shores, but I'm a bit more convinced this is the one to pair with the Biogon 35/2.

Hi Juha,
Happy Birthday. Glad you were given permission to make the purchase. Excellent first outing.

This may be heresy, but I’d like to see this lens compared side by side with the 50GM in crop mode. I know they are totally different lenses with totally different uses, but I’d still like to see an image comparison. The 50GM in crop takes beautiful 75/1.8 images.

Awesome and happy birthday!
Hopefully no peer pressure from us anxious overseas observers to make this purchase!

OK, here's what I see, technically, in Juha's photos (at least the first 20 so far):
At 'infinity' and f/5.6 on the Sony sensor, it's very sharp across the frame with only the extreme corners losing a bit. Wide open at near MFD distances reveals residual SA and the accompanying 'glow.' SA decreases as focusing distance increases. At medium-long distances (the palm tree #8810), wide open sharpness looks good across most of the frame. There is some wide open purple fringing and also color fringing, but doesn't seem too bad. A fair amount of optical vignetting and corresponding 'cats eyes' into the corners. Background blur/bokeh can be unsettled depending on focusing distance and also distance from subject to background. It's reminding me a lot of the recent VM35/1.5. Seeing some signs of astigmatism in the periphery. Foreground blur appears somewhat smoother than background blur. Based on the last few photos shooting into the setting sun, flare resistance is also quite good!
Difficult to know if some characteristics are specific to, or amplified by use on stock Sony sensor.
So far it looks like a really good performer and IMO might be a great compromise solution if the 75/1.5's size is unappealing. Also, this looks to be a much sharper lens than the old 75/1.8 Heliar.
Juha: any chance for a photo of the 75/1.9 on your camera?

Thanks for the analysis! Here are some photos of the lens on camera, the caps, and size comparison between CV 75/2.5, MS-Optics 73/1.5, CV 75/1.9 and CV 75/1.5:

I don't have the GM so I can't do that comparison myself. For AF I'm sticking with my good old Sony Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 ZA which is my favorite lens for event shooting on my A9 and I also have the 50/2.5 G for a smaller option.

These are great, thank you!
Regarding the wide open close shots:
I didn't expect this look, which is a rendering transcendent of the CV 75 f/1.5 rather than a rendering that falls short of it. The look reminds me of the Leica Noctilux 50 f/1.2 re-issue but with modern sharpness at the point of focus. It almost looks like they were shot with an anamorphic lens but the foreground and background were de-squeezed to slightly different ratios.
