p.6 #1 · Cosina to release Voigtlander 75mm f/1.9 VM
Today Cosina announced the official (Japan) release date for the 2 VM 75/1.9 lenses. They will be shipping starting from 7th of February (only 2 weeks or so to go).

Japanese MSRP is about $750 US while street price is around $680. Considering there's typically a slight US market premium on Voigtlander compared to the Japanese market, I wouldn't be surprised to see it priced at $750 or $799, at least initially for the early adopter rush.

I prefer the glossy paint, but in MC. So, buy both, have someone swop out the optics, and let me know.
Hi Ron,
I am with you. Why oh why wouldn't they put the MC version in the glossy black paint like the others in the Ultron series like my 28mm f2 Ultron II Asph VM?

I think the real question is why can't they just do a consistent body design and have all these different shapes and finishes. Silver, black matte, black gloss, black something else, panda, nickel, this that silly shapes and 5 different types of aperture rings, some tabs some focus rings...

Yes! I would like all my VM lenses to have the same aesthetics, and handling including focus tabs. This is so important on MF lenses I can't for the life of me understand why it is not the default.

At least they matched the 35 and 50 APO Lanthar designs

I like that CV break the monotony of modern lens design. They make more than one flavour of basically everything, optically speaking, so I'm glad they take some artistic license with their physical design as well. Fits the personality of the company.

I also don't mind different mechanical / body designs at all as long as the usability is good. Some new and refreshing designs could make the lenses appeal to various different sets of customers too. It would be difficult to imagine their whole line-up with same design across all lenses. Maybe for professional photographers consistency with their lens set is important but for hobbyists who shoot for pleasure the different designs could be appealing and fun as well. For example the harmonic design of Loxia lenses doesn't really appeal to me much and it would be boring if all CV lenses were made like that as well.
With some of their designs the usability has been compromised a bit though, like the focus ring of original VM 50/1.5 and VM 35/1.7 that most people didn't like. I would like the usability to be a priority with all the lenses as well.

Wow the price for the 75/1.9 really isn't bad. I have to say I'm tempted, though as someone who remains happy with the 75/2.5 Heliar, I wonder how they'd compare...

35s and 50s seem to be much higher in price (relatively speaking). I wonder if the cost to manufacture a 75/90 (telephoto/short telephoto) lens is roughly the same as their wider counterparts and that the reduced demand is why they're often priced lower/more economical.

75/1.9 VM and Z-mount 15/4.5 are available to customers from today in Japan. I didn't order 75/1.9 this time since I have enough 75mm and 73mm lenses and didn't want to replace my 75/1.5 VM with the new one (trade-in value of 75/1.5 is not so great at Map Camera either), so I can't provide any photo samples this time. I hope to try 75/1.9 out at CP+ later this month though.
