If 8k is important to you whenever you upgrade, make sure to watch some reviews of it. Jordan at DPTV shows that the handheld 8k/24 looks like you're shooting through a wobbling bowl of Jello.

It sounds like the boys were drinking again...

I'll reserve judgement until it gets into the hands of actual working photographers and videographers... not that many will actually buy this for video work.

What is the trusted source for DR measurements now a days? DxO, Photons to Photos? Having the a7R III for so long, I haven’t really looked at what sources people use today.

Photons to photos has been helpful in terms of assigning a number, but I find the comparisons at MirrorlessComparison.com very helpful for real world DR testing as they compare cameras in terms of latitude in the highlights and shadow recovery. The A7R III vs. IV comparison is at the link below. It compares many factors but you could take a look at the DR test:
https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/sony-vs-sony/a7r-iii-vs-a7r-iv/

Another example is their A7 III vs. A7 IV comparison:
https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/sony-vs-sony/a7-iii-vs-a7-iv/

Their real world comparison shows the A7 IV as visibly better in terms of color noise/cast in the shadows, even though Photons to Photos shows the two cameras as identical in terms of stops. If you take into account that the A7 IV is better at the pixel level AND has a higher resolution, this to me is a nice advantage to the IV that most other reviews didn't mention. This is in contrast to the A7R III to IV being a slight step backwards, even if the resolution increase could erase that in a print. To me, having a slight DR advantage is helpful in saving me time in choosing how to apply NR in post, even if a more practical photographer might say the difference is just academic.

True, and especially for 8K video work, which is why I said what I said to someone considering it for 8K video.

I can see the reaction is lukewarm, but I aside from my disappointment that sensor tech in terms of noise and DR seems to have plateaued since the A7R III, there are a number of upgrades here that are really useful to me for landscape photography. I currently have the A7R III and A7 IV and here is why I am considering replacing the R III with R V:

1) The new LCD design is really helpful because my A7R III flip screen is the best for landscape orientation while the swivel LCD of my A7 IV is my favorite for portrait orientation. For some people this might be trivial, but getting straight lines is really helpful for me as a compositional aid and I do my best work when I don't have to fight an off-axis LCD.

2) In-camera focus stacking is something I almost always use on my R5 for static subjects. I'm glad that they have it here and that it appears to work with the mechanical shutter. On the R5 it is electronic shutter only which blunts some of the DR gains you get from stacking the images. Here it should provide really clean shadows when I stack in Helicon Focus.

3) The improved IBIS will help me get more shots at lower shutter speeds before setting up the tripod.

4) The multi-shot mode that accounts for subject movement is potentially useful. I am hoping it will work with LibRaw PixelShift2DNG so I can skip Imaging Edge.

5) The step forward from the A7R III to A7 IV in color science has saved me a considerable amount of time in post as the changes over generations have been more and more to my taste. I expect the R V to at least equal the A7 IV.

6) I like the new button layout of the A7 IV and those benefits are here on the V. I disliked the EC dial on the older generations and never used it. I have reassigned this on the A7 IV to switching AF tracking modes and I envision doing the same here. I like that this dial can be unlocked or locked. It looks like the mode dial is always locked until you press, which I don't like.

7) The new menu system is a big step forward IMO.

8) I will definitely benefit from the new LCD, which is finally in line with peers. The upgraded EVF looks nice since I'm coming from lower resolution displays on my current cameras. The hit to the battery life is a negative.

9) You can now set an exposure longer than 30s using the bulb timer menu. I would prefer there simply to be a selectable shutter speed longer than 30s, but this is easier than breaking out my phone to time ultra long exposures.

All in all, while I prefer the A7R III's sensor (slight DR advantage and second base ISO at 640 vs. 320), there seem to be enough upgrades for landscape shooting that I can close the slight gap with image stacking and improved IBIS. I don't think an A7 V will be coming for a while so this might be my best bet for a bit.

Well, it was smart enough to focus on the grasshopper, the only subject in the shot, even when the ape behind it switched the focusing to airplane.

In what way? DPR results are heavily dependent on their JPEG settings and/or the (lack of) their post-processing skills.

At least the DxO and P2P results are (mostly) objective measurements.

P2P just measures the baseline noise with the body cap on at 1/8000 and pits that against the full well capacity of the sensor. It is an interesting number to be sure, and is the one so easy to quote on forums during flame wars about who’s the best.

I don’t see in what way post processing skill comes in to play with DPreviews studio scene, they’ve published their methodology for producing the scene and it seems sound to me, and in either case you can actually download the files for yourself.

Additionally, being able to download these files is an excellent way to remind yourself of exactly how little difference exists between most of these sensors today 😄

Say what? That's 100% factually correct here in the US, and given how much inflation has impacted things like chips, it's actually pretty remarkable.

Because many electronics go down in price, like tvs, rather than go up.

I'm going to predict a feature of the A7RVI: The memory card door will not have a release button.
While I'm at it, the A7RVII will.

Is the sensor read out fast enough that Pixelshift can actually be used with flash now?

Exactly, and for the most part panel technology has been static for quite some time now so there's not a lot of R&D to recoup compared to the new things added in cameras. Never mind the orders of magnitude difference in markets. It's just not a realistic comparison.

Yeah. We’re more in a commodity state with TVs, especially in the low end.

If we want commodity pricing on high end cameras, then we’d have to accept low innovation.

IMHO

Every September to December tv prices plummet to rock bottom prices. But I guess tvs are a bit different.

Also, Oled tech and burn in, along with refresh rate, does progress fairly rapidly, but I am also looking at it through a gaming perspective.

Not a Sony shooter but just spent a week with someone with a new A7R IV and I can observe that two things mentioned in the V will be highly desirable.

The increased resolution of the back display will be quite useful. I shoot with an R5 and can focus and frame in the dark with my back display. Not so with the IV. This was quite a frustration for my friend and we had to flood the frame with flashlights for him to be able to critically focus.

The second is focus bracketing. I have seen comments indicating this is not such a big deal from IV shooters. If you need to focus bracket (which happens often in landscape) the auto bracketing feature is extremely useful. I could focus bracket and reframe numerous shots in the field while he was still manually focus bracketing a single shot. He was quite jealous of this feature on the R5 (and I can tell you many other Sony shooters are as well).

These two features alone will cause many upgrades in the Sony camp. Not to mention much better IS and focusing system that turns this into a very powerful wildlife camera as well. For those that like both landscape and wildlife this is a no brainer!

Good luck and enjoy Sony shooters. Bob

Still use my A7R2 for landscapes. Would love to have 61mpix, but I’m getting by with 42.

ya know, I’m actually thinking of picking up another a7RIIIa since the prices on even a new one are getting pretty cheap. I can’t lay out for even a used A1 right now, and only that one would interest me for a silent shutter that’ll work with LED lighting. Since I’m already in the habit of doing MF a lot, why spend more at this point?

Someone answered my question on variable shutter and anti -flicker which main reason i bought a A9II and a A1 so thank you. Now given that this adds some real pluses, not buying it since i have the A1 but if this was around at that time i may have jumped on it. One reason extra is a 26mpx crop file over my A1 21mm Crop file not a big deal but more elbow room is always welcome. I have yet to look at any reviews like Mark Galers which is about the only guy worth his salt on reviews even though he is a Sony ambassador which is fine. I may dig deeper on it and maybe try to rent it and see how it performs

Not sure if I'll buy.
I am very upset that Sony listened to those of us complaining about not having focus bracketing and then put it in a new camera and not as a firmware update on our existing A1's (or, A9's or A7Riv's)!!
I am an engineer and have done tons of software design. I am confident that creating the software for a firmware update to control the focus points automatically is a trivial software task, easily added to and easily handled by the latest generation bodies!
Many of us have influenced other photographers to move from other brands, but I feel like Sony, by not adding significant features in a timely manner to our high-end existing cameras is doing the opposite of rewarding us for our efforts.
The last couple years I have been sharing my photos with my friends using Facebook. Because of the very positive feedback I have been getting from them, I was recently considering adding hashtags, like Canon photographers do, to let viewers know that the photos were taken with my Sony equipment. I am rethinking that, now.
